20180128開闊生命的廣度 Doing Something Meaningful to Broaden Our Horizons

Seeing new volunteers joining our Tzu Chi family and being certified in the Year-End Blessings Ceremony, I am truly joyful, and I give them my blessings.

Indeed, time flies by so fast and it waits for no one; as days go by, our life diminishes as well. No one has control over the length of their life; however, we can increase the depth and broaden the scope of our life by making the most of out of it.

Take Tzu Chi volunteers for example, before joining Tzu Chi; their families are what they care about the most. After join Tzu Chi, the scope of their life has broadened; they are about things happening around the world, and love everyone, including strangers. Their goal in life has been broadened.

Their love and care are no longer restricted to their own family, and can be extended (to the big family of the world.) (Before), what they were concerned about was either family or business affairs; but now, doing Tzu Chi work becomes their mission, which is to take up the responsibility of caring for the world.

We see the sharing of our volunteer, Chunzhu whose Dharma name is Ming Ding. She suffers from a rare brain tumor that is flat like paper. Having surgery to remove this tumor is risky, so it is best to leave it and learn to live it in peace. She is full of wisdom. She has seizes time and affinities to do good and made the best use of her life to serve. (She lives a meaningful life.)

She also learns the Dharma. She and her husband are both volunteers and walk the Bodhisattva path together. She transforms her karmic affinity by seizing time to do Tzu Chi, (caring for people in need,) and sharing her own experiences with them.

The sutra teaches us to see the importance of the time in our life, and urge us to (cultivate diligently.) How do we do that? The Buddha teaches us to walk the Bodhisattva path. Doing so will help us understand how to best use (the years we have in this life). It’s rare to be born as humans and even more so to hear the Buddha’s teachings.

Now that we have been born as humans and have heard the Buddha’s teachings, we must carry in action. We must have faith in the Dharma; faith is the mother of all meritorious virtues, and that the Buddha came to this world for a great purpose. Therefore, as days go by, and we are getting advanced in years, we ought to put our years to best use.

Despite, being old, we still need to broaden our horizons. The accumulation of time helps us do that. Therefore, the older we get, we have more experiences and know more about life. We then take these experience and knowledge to help us become bodhisattvas, people who (serve with enlightened love,) which is why we need to walk the bodhisattvas Path.

As we get older, we must walk the path more diligently. So, now we’ve set up an “Age Bank”, and I am the first patron.  I have deposited 50 years into it. I am only keeping 30-some years with me. So, as someone who is in her early 30s, I have a lot of stamina. I recall, at 30 I’ve already was established Tzu Chi. When I was 30, Tzu Chi was in its second year. (After all these years,) now, Tzu Chi is in its 52nd year. This year, Tzu Chi will be in its 53rd year.

All in all, if I use the mindset of me as a 30-year-old to serve and carry out Tzu Chi work, it is like I’m middle-aged again; at thirty, I was developing the mission of Tzu Chi, and the spirit and values behind our missions. Now, I’ll serve with the same spirit I had back then.

Therefore, let us not be limited by our age. Our age is unlimited. So, we should forget how old we are and just do Tzu Chi work. This is how we increase the depth of our life. For every day that we volunteer, we grow in wisdom-life. In walking the Bodhisattva path, we give of ourselves every day to serve the world and try our best to bring harmony to society. We bring value to our life. By serving people, we gain wisdom.

Everyone, this is what we need to strive to do now. Living bodhisattvas (strive to learn the immense wisdom of the Buddha) and mindfully serve people. Every day, we bring meaning to our life. Everyone needs to emulate the Buddha’s heart and take on my missions. We should harbor great compassion, which is the Buddha’s heart.

As bodhisattvas walking on the Bodhisattva Path, we mustn’t have anger, complaints, or resentments. We need to get rid of our anger, complaints, resentments, afflictions, and ignorance. Starting now, we need to nurture loving-kindness, compassion, joy, equanimity, sincerity, uprightness, good faith, and honesty.

So, let us renew ourselves by emulating the Buddha’s heart, taking on my missions, and walking the Bodhisattva path. Together, let us broaden the Bodhisattva Path for people after us to pave a smooth path and to bring peace to our world. We wish the world peaceful and the climate restored to its balance. This is something we can strive to do.

Therefore, we must nurture and emulate the Buddha’s spirit of loving-kind, compassion, joy, and equanimity. Do you understand this? (Yes.) Good. I hope everyone can emulate the Buddha’s heart and take on my missions. It’s the same for experienced, senior volunteers. Let us renew ourselves and take up our initial aspiration and enlightened love to serve the world and grow in wisdom-life. This is my encouragement to everyone.
