20171127志為天下護大地Protecting the Earth to Benefit All Living Beings

From the sharings of our volunteers, we see that they have taken the Dharma to heart and practice it in their life.

What they shared contained true Dharma. Everyone starts as an ordinary being and progresses towards being a living bodhisattva.

The six paramitas are giving, following precepts, forbearance, diligence, samadhi, and wisdom. These are what we should cultivate.

The true mastery of Samadhi is practiced through daily routines such as doing chores and eating.

We even practice it while walking the Bodhisattva Path, doing charity, and protecting the environment, and we create blessings through charity work.

This is cultivating both blessings and wisdom. Having a life of comfort, why are our volunteers committing themselves to recycling?

It’s dirty and it smells bad. Yet, why are they doing recycling so diligently and mindfully? Because they choose to do the difficult task.

They are willing to humble and devote themselves to do recycling and deal with piles of garbage and bad smell.

It is certainly not an easy task to sort the recyclables while enduring dirty garbage and bad odor. Without wisdom, who ca do this?

There are profound principles buried in the garbage. First, we need to know where the garbage comes from.

Most of them are plastics, made from petroleum under the ground. Petroleum is a limited resource. It will run out one day.

By extracting it, and making it into plastic, we pollute the air. For all these years, it has created a vicious cycle.

Now we are faced with extreme climate and numerous disasters all over the world. That is the source of the problem.

The process of manufacturing plastic ends up harming humans and damaging the Earth. Plastic does not decompose in soil.

How much land do we have on the surface of our planet to bury garbage? They are now polluting our ocean.

A wise person cannot bear to see garbage harming the Earth and polluting the ocean. How many creatures have been harmed because of these plastics and garbage? Thinking of this really saddens me.

This is the wisdom that comes from compassion. We all should make efforts to give of ourselves humbly for the protection of the Earth.

We collect recyclables, sort them in detail, turn them into yarn, then into fabric. When we deliver the eco-blankets to our care recipients, we harbor gratitude in our hearts.

Holding the blankets with both hands, we give with our utmost respect. For goods made of plastic, we should always recycle them.
It helps reduce the amount of garbage, save energy, and reducing carbon emission. All in all, it is very important to protect the environment.

Tzu Chi volunteer Lee Jin Shieh, “Sorting out recyclables is not easy job. We are very grateful to have the opportunities to visit these government authorities and leaders and exchange ideas with them.

We bring them to our Wuxi recycling station and our Kunshan recycling station, so that they can understand how we recycle.

This is a major task that has to be done with the collective efforts by the government’s environmental protection agency, local business, and residents, as well as other non-profit organizations.

Indeed, I believe this can be done with everyone’s joint efforts. And now that I have listened to Master’s Dharma talk for a year, I hope I can incorporate more of Tzu Chi’s values on recycling and Master’s Dharma into our recycling work.”

There are more than a billion people in China. We can make a vow to inspire and guide people in China to have an environmental awareness, have a consensus, and take collective action.

Not only do we need to know the problem, we need to understand it, and take action to solve the problem.

Merely knowing the problem but does not take action to solve it will not achieve anything. Let’s inspire others to act with our action.
Tzu Chi volunteer Pong Fong Chin, “Last September, I gave a talk a to a class about the importance of recycling and how to do it.

The students have been doing recycling ever since, and after a year, the whole school joined. Every Tuesday afternoon, students collect used paper in the school.

They then use the money from selling the recycled papers to help students in needs.”

Volunteers, I have expectations of you. You must do charity work and protect the environment at the same time with the spirit of charity.

All of us should remember to harbor great compassion and wear the robe of gentleness and forbearance.

We should respect each other with our power of love. We serve with gratitude, respect, and love. We give of ourselves while being grateful.

We are about to hold winter aid distributions. Please actively participate in the distributions. Please distribute the aid with respect.

Everyone should be careful while making trips to and from the distribution sites, and remain safe and in good spirits during distributions.

At winter distributions, as we give of ourselves, we can see the suffering of people and experience the warmth of love when serving others.

In carrying out charity missions, please do so with love. We should also prioritize environmental protection.

Everyone should practice the Three Rules of preaching. We expound the Dharma by harboring the heart of great compassion, wearing the robe of gentleness and forbearance, and realizing the empty nature of all things. This is my expectation of you.

Now that you have been certified and completed your volunteer trainings, you are taking the first step on the Bodhisattva Path.

You are now a fully certified Tzu Chi volunteer. Please develop Samadhi at all times in daily life. You should always emulate the Buddha’s heart and carry out my missions.

Can we all work together and give of ourselves for the benefit of all beings in the world? Yes, we can! We can do this I give all of you my blessings.

For the upcoming new year, let us make the resolution to cultivate ourselves on the Bodhisattva Path from this moment on. May you cultivate both blessings and wisdom.
