20171126轉識成智積福慧Seizing Every Moment to Transform Our Consciousnesses into Wisdoms

Seeing more people around the world becoming volunteers gives me joy and comfort. However, I also feel we are running short of time, as there are still so many people needing help. Who can help them? Seeing people suffer, bodhisattvas also suffer because they’ve aspired to be living bodhisattvas but time is limited and everyone is getting old. I feel that we are running short of time.

There are still many things in the world that still need to be done and many people still need help. So, we hold on to our vows and take good care of our mind. That is why I keep telling people we must turn our consciousnesses into wisdom.

Master always says “Which will come first, impermanence or tomorrow?” Having money to support our life is enough. I had a talk with my wife, “Our only daughter will be working soon, and she’s about to graduate, so she won’t cost us much money.” I applied for early retirement with my company. My pension lessened by several tens of thousands RMB each year.

But I think that having devoted my time to volunteer with Tzu Chi makes my life more meaningful. As I’m healthy, I can volunteer with Tzu Chi and go to different places to promote recycling. Participating in Tzu Chi’s volunteer work is much more meaningful to me.

Volunteers, since we are all ordinary beings, we must learn to transform our consciousnesses and perceptions into wisdom. It’s called transforming consciousnesses into wisdoms. Ordinary people have the mindset of “in giving my time and working hard, my goal is to make money. I want to make more and more money. “This is how ordinary people think. However, bodhisattvas can turn (ordinary mindset) into wisdom.

This volunteer says, “Having money to support our life is enough.” He makes the best use of his time by doing recycling. He devotes himself to recycling. That was how he transformed his consciousnesses into wisdoms.

Tzu Chi is very mindful in recycling and we sort recyclables into many categories. Plastic bottles are shredded, made into pellets, and then spun into yarns. The fabric made by this yarn can be made into blanked and winter clothing. This is an example of the wisdom of fulfillment of deed. In cultivating the wisdom of fulfillment of deeds, we transform the first five consciousnesses, along with the five sense organs and the five sense objects, into wisdom. (With wisdom,) we can turn trash into fine winter clothing.

This is all wisdom. We can also turn our sixth consciousnesses into the wisdom of wondrous observation. We must observe well so that we know what we need to do for the world and how we can be someone’s wholesome friend. We must choose to do what’s right; when we see something that is right, we should just do it. To be able to observe and think well is the wisdom of wondrous observation. That’s turning the sixth consciousnesses into the wisdom of wondrous observation.

We must go one step further and transform the seventh consciousnesses into the wisdom of impartiality. All beings are equal. The seventh consciousness allows us to think. We must think deeply to see that all beings are equal. The essence of mind, the Buddha, and all beings are the same.

We should promote vegetarianism and not sacrifice animals for our cravings of meat. We must thereby cherish all life forms. In realizing all beings are equal, we have transformed our seventh consciousnesses into the wisdom of impartiality.

After realizing all people and all life forms are equal, we can transform the eighth consciousnesses into the wisdom that is like a great, clear, round mirror. We will be free from attachments. Nothing can contaminate our hearts. With a pure heart, we give without asking anything in return while being grateful.

Yes, by transforming the consciousnesses into wisdoms, our heart can be full of wisdom. This is emulating the Buddha. It is profound. Don’t think that volunteering with Tzu Chi is something easy. In fact, it isn’t. Take recycling as an example, bending down to pick up recyclables is not as easy as it seems. Recycling is not easy, let alone giving ourselves to help people in suffering.

If we don’t change our habitual tendencies, there’s little we can accomplish. We need to join everyone’s effort together and practice tolerance. If we are set in our ways, we might never be able to help other. If everyone refuses to accept others and act as individuals, we will not be able to work together and unite in strength.

Thus, to save those in suffering, we must first save our hearts. If we are to attain Buddhahood, we must get rid of our habitual tendencies. If we don’t change our habitual tendencies, attaining Buddhahood will be delayed. How long can we delay our cultivation? We should just be wasting time.

We must seize the present moment; treat every moment as the one kind only moment of our life. A thought that arises in a moment can impact us for our whole life. This goes for every moment. So, we must take good care of our heart. We need to take good care of our every thought at every moment.

Every moment can be accumulated into something. We can accumulate negative karma in every moment. We can also accumulate blessings and wisdoms as a bodhisattva in every moment. If you do good deeds this moment, you did not create negative karma for this moment.

That is why we must occupy our time with good thoughts in our mind so that we will have no room for negative thoughts and we won’t create bad karma. So, we must take good care of our heart. Do you understand what I mean? (Yes.)

That is how we seize a moment and make it everlasting. We must be firm in our vows. Holding on to our vows and make it lasting starts with seizing every single moment. Can you do this? (Yes.) Good. Then, you need to cultivate yourselves diligently in every second.
