20171119四大合一傳法脈Passing on the Jing Si Dharma Lineage Through the Four Missions

Tzu Chi is in its 52nd year. Looking back the past 50-some years of Tzu Chi, I wish that Tzu Chi will continue into the future. In the infinite space and time, I hope Tzu Chi’s spirit will always exist and be widespread in this world.

Everyone, starting Tzu Chi wasn’t easy. With no resources, we began our charity work, but now we’ve developed Tzu Chi to its present scope. I am really grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers for their support to our charity work. When I wanted to build a hospital, they devoted themselves to making this vision come true. They took action to give of themselves, which moved the medical mission step by step toward fruition.

When volunteers saw me so determined to carry out these missions, they all devoted themselves wholeheartedly with these missions in mind and worked toward the goal. It was hard work, and the process was difficult and full of challenges. But, we overcame all the obstacles. On thus rough road, we have paved every inch of it with love.

This is why I thank all the volunteers. Together, we built a hospital. I then said, “The hospital is built with everyone’s efforts, we must devote ourselves to taking care of it, wholeheartedly.” That is why we have hospital volunteers.

Not long after the hospital was established, I said that I wanted to build a nursing school. Tzu Chi volunteers started the effort again. Establishing a nursing school was not easy; the project had to be approved by the Ministry of Education. We also needed to find land and funds. Many requirements had to be met. I am grateful for Tzu Chi volunteers’ dedication.

After the school was built, I said, “Now that the school had been built, volunteers should take on the responsibility of caring for the students.”  I then had them establish Yi Di Mother and Sister Association.

After that I said, “Although we have charity, medical, and education missions, I still feel one mission is missing.” It is the culture mission. Back then, many professionals thought that there were already enough media outlets in Taiwan. They also thought that a Buddhist nun like me shouldn’t get involved in media, and it was complicated and rather unnecessary for me to get involved.
But, I then told everyone, “The project is not unnecessary. If we want to spread the Dharma, it is a must.” If we want to purify people’s hear, we must establish our own TV station.

Around that time, we were also promoting recycling. I told volunteers that we should do recycling and tell people its importance. (The funds from our recycling program go to support Da Ai TV. That’s how recycling supports Da Ai TV.) After established Da Ai TV, I said that Tzu Chi’s spirit and values has to be adopted in our four missions.

We must have Tzu Chi’s spirit and values in carrying out the charity mission, the medical mission, and the education mission. Tzu Chi’s spirit and values is the core of all four missions. It is like a spring of clear water. That is how I expect the four missions to come together as one.

I want to thank Tzu Chi volunteers who helped build the four missions. Tzu Chi’s establishments and lands all come from volunteers’ giving of themselves. I am grateful to our hospitals, superintendents, doctors, nurses, and all other staff, including medical technicians and administrative staff. If they didn’t work as one and had Tzu Chi’s spirit and values, they would not provide quality medical care with love.

I also thank teachers of our education mission for their education to teaching and nurturing talents year after year. In every Tzu Chi hospital, we have many fine nurses are graduated from our schools. Our fine doctors are also graduates of our medical school. These graduates always hold fast to their position and progress with their power of love. I am grateful and very touched.

Also, I am grateful to the teachers and staff of Tzu Chi schools including universities, secondary, elementary schools, and preschool. They help the students build a solid academic foundation from preschool to university. Tzu Chi’s four missions are already well-established.

In the past few years, I have focused on expounding the Lotus Sutra, because I want to carry out the Buddha’s spirit of delivering all beings and alleviating their suffering in the world. In the Buddha’s time, Bodhisattva was a concept. The Bodhisattvas (described in sutra) were ideals from innumerable eons ago.

The bodhisattvas in our time are real people who deliver all beings. They alleviate people from their suffering and give them joy. Isn’t this what we have been doing? We now live a world of impurities, but we also have living bodhisattvas in our world. In this world, we are working hard to establish the Tzu Chi School of Buddhism and make the Jing Si Dharma lineage clear. We are working toward establishing the Tzu Chi School of Buddhism, and actualizing its spirit and values in our four missions.

We must place importance on the Tzu Chi School of Buddhism. It must have the Jing Si Dharma lineage. O hope everyone here work together for this goal. We are all the first generation of the Tzu Chi School of Buddhism and Jing Si Dharma lineage. We all have the responsibility to establish the Tzu Chi School of Buddhism in this world. And, we work toward having Tzu Chi volunteers all over the world.
