20171109 - 轉念利益諸眾生Respecting Life and Caring for the Earth by Going Vegetarian

How high did the floodwaters reach?
About neck-high! Be careful!

This is the worst flood in years.
In 1995, we also suffered from a great flood, but it was less severe.

Back then, it rained for two to three hours, but this time it poured for days. The water rose very quickly.
Very quickly?
We couldn’t even escape.

How many boxed meals do you need?
We need four.
You haven’t had anything to eat yet?
No. There’s no electricity or gas. We can’t cook.

From this morning till now, we have given out 150-160 boxed meals to about 200 people who are taking shelter at Jit Sin High School. Because there are many people affected, the auditorium of the high school acts as a shelter for them. We have been sending boxed meals and water there.

Malaysia was hit by the worst flooding in decades. The floodwaters are very high. The disaster has brought suffering to locals, and the relief work is not easy. Yet, our volunteers all give with love to help.

Also, we truly must heighten our vigilance. Our volunteers in Malaysia used to say that Malaysia rarely suffered from storms or floods. Yet, many natural disasters have hit Malaysia in recent years. So, we truly must always stay vigilant.

We see the Bonn Climate Change Conference. Tzu Chi is the only Buddhist organization invited to take part. Through this event, we can better understand how extreme climate is affecting the world and what we can do to reduce carbon emissions, curb global warming, and bring peace to the Earth.

At the conference venue, we also set up an exhibit booth to display what we have done and what measures we have taken to safeguard the Earth.

We also see our volunteers continue to promote vegetarianism. It’s best if everyone can go vegetarian because only through vegetarianism can we truly reduce carbon emissions.

With the growing world population, more livestock are raised to meet people’s demand for meat. Yet, this leads to over 100 million animals being killed every day.

This creates the karma of killing. In addition, animals are sentient beings, so if they are killed for meat, they will harbor anger and hatred, and this will lead to karmic retributions. This is why there are more and more disasters around the world.

This year, there have been many severe disasters all over the world, be it floods, hurricanes, droughts, or wildfires. Almost every day, we see news reports of natural disasters.

Nature’s elements have become imbalanced, so natural disasters frequently come about around the world. Every time I see news reports of disasters, I am truly very worried as we can’t reverse the disasters that have taken place.

It’s my wish that we can awaken to (the connection between our minds and natural disasters.) If we remain astray in life and do whatever we want for transient pleasure, I’m truly very worried as we’ll create negative karma which will accumulate and bring about many disasters. It’s truly worrying that many people have yet to awaken.

So, I have been reminding you to serve with love. I hope that it’s not just a few people serve with love. Rather, everyone should support one another with love in serving humanity.

Indeed, many people in the world are still lost in life. They create much negative karma, which brings about disasters. Therefore, many other people are greatly affected. At a time like this, we all share collective karma. So, we truly need to be vigilant.

We must also work to inspire love in people and encourage everyone to respect all living beings and resist their craving for meat.

We see a girl in Malaysia. She’s an advocate of vegetarianism.

My teacher at the Tzu Chi Academy arranged a debate on vegetarianism. I was on the affirmative side and made arguments on the benefits of vegetarianism.

After we presented our arguments, the negative side rebutted that since I wasn’t a vegetarian, I wasn’t in the position to be on the affirmative side. This truly awakened me.

So, I immediately made up my mind to go vegetarian. I planned to eat vegetarian for one month first. I thought it wasn’t hard to do.

And as soon as I made up my mind, I didn’t crave for meat anymore. No matter how much meat you put before me, I won’t want to eat it.

So, what I’d like to say is that if we’re determined to go vegetarian, even if there are many obstacles, we can make it.
“When there is a will, there is a way.” I hope you can all join me and eat vegetarian.

Her classmate questioned her position on promoting vegetarianism because she wasn’t a vegetarian herself. So, she made up her mind to go vegetarian, and because she went vegetarian, her parents have also adopted the vegetarian diet. Her family support her with joy.

Once she understands right principles in life and practice them, her family will be in harmony. By going vegetarian, they become healthier and happier as they respect life, protect the environment, and even help alleviate air pollution.

Once we change our mindset, we can benefit Mother Earth and all living beings. So, I hope that all of us can change our mindset. It only takes a thought. It’s simple and doable. With determination, there’s nothing we can’t achieve.

Every one of us needs to do good and safeguard Mother Earth, and we need to take steadfast steps as we work together with love to protect our environment.

It’s up to us to do that, and every one of us can take steps to achieve it. By gathering and pooling everyone’s love, we can bring peace to Mother Earth and everyone can be safe and well.
