20171106提燈照亮人間路Lighting the Path for the World

The climate is out of balance. In the past two days, heavy rain poured down in Penang, Malaysia for 15 hours non-stop. Soon, a large area was flooded. In fact, many Tzu Chi volunteers were also affected. Many shops were flooded as well.

Tzu Chi volunteers were very concerned about the severity of the flood. Once the rain stopped. Once the rain stopped, they tried several ways and went to survey the affected areas and provided the affectees with not food.

These are the Tzu Chi volunteers, living their life to the fullest. When people are in need, Tzu Chi volunteers can provide assistance. The locals all know about this. We see how mindful they are in quickly starting the relief work.

Now is the middle of school year, it’s important for students to not miss school. So, volunteers went to clean up the schools. They were already mobilized to help schools clean up only one day after the flood. These acts of timely help and relief are truly praiseworthy.

Tzu Chi volunteers all over the world give of themselves like this. Their work is truly praiseworthy. In Malaysia people live a good life, but when a disaster strikes, volunteers can put aside their own situation to help those who are affected.

There is another group of volunteer; they are in South Africa. Last month, storms brought devastation to large areas in South Africa. People there have been living a hard life, and the poor have a tougher time to recover from disaster.

So, our volunteers in South Africa immediately formed into several teams and went to the affected areas. Some poor people live in hard to reach areas. With landslides and collapsed roads, volunteers went there regardless of the difficulties.

Especially that, for some of them, walking is difficult due to their health condition. However, they were not deterred by this and still gave of themselves. This shows their sincerity. In carrying out disaster relief, they distribute goes to people in dire need.

Every grain of rice should go to the mouth of people in hunger. This is our principle. We don’t waste any resources as food does not come easily. The relief supplies do not come easily, so volunteers have the responsibility to make sure that resources are properly used.

This is the principle they go by. They overcame their physical conditions and visited people who need the most help. This kind of devotion is so sincere and so moving it goes beyond words. In Sierra Leone, the children there suffer a lot.

Indeed, their suffering comes from many factors accumulated over the course of time. One of the natural resources of Sierra Leone is diamond. Because this country has diamonds and when people discovered this resource, greed emerged.

This greed created a destructive force. People became violent and committed atrocities. Why? For diamonds. Why? For money. With money people bought weapons. With weapons, they tried to take over each other’s territory. These are negative karma created by people.

See how many people have suffered as a consequence. Natural landscape was destroyed in the process. How pitiful this is. In August, a torrential rain caused a major landslide, which buried more than a thousand people.

It is heartrending to see this. It happened this August, and Tzu Chi has been providing affectees with hot meals every day. We shipped rice there, and made sure children could eat in a hygienic way by shipping and distributing reusable bowls and spoons there.

A local priest was very touched. He said that many children there have never owned anything in their life except for the cloth they wear, which are very worn out. Tzu Chi gave each child a bowl and a spoon. They are the first and the only things these children have.

The priest was very touched and grateful. Now the children can use their bowls to receive the hot food that we provide for them every day. We look forward to giving them more help and assistance. Recently, a group of Sierra Leoneans including personnel of a military hospital, came to Taiwan to learn.

They visited Tzu Chi recycling station and were amazed to see that clothing can be made from recycled plastic bottles. They said that after they go back, they will promote recycling and environmental protection and make the best use of recycled resources.

They also harbor a heart of gratitude. They kept all the bags of rice that we distributed and repurposed them into useful items. They cherish even the rice bags. There are so many touching stories. What should we do to close the gap between the rich and the poor?

What the rich throws away can be very valuable and precious to the poor. My heart aches when I see how the poor live. Everyone has the ability to help those in suffering. I hope people can try to understand more about people suffering around the world and aspire to help them. This is what we can do for them.
