20171105聞法開道世相傳Creating the Bodhisattva Path for Generations to Come

I vow to emulate the Buddha’s heart and take Master’s mission as my own. I vow to observe Tzu Chi’s ten percepts and practice Master’s teachings by cultivating sincerity, integrity, good faith, and honesty, while serving with the spirit of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. I will seize the moment and make it everlasting. I will follow Master’s teachings.

Everything is created by the mind. How important the mind is. We all have the same intrinsic nature as the Buddha. When the Buddha attained enlightenment, at that instant, his mind become one with the universe and he acquired knowledge of everything there is to know, including all life principles. All principles entered the Buddha’s wisdom, which is as vast as the sea.

The Buddha’s enlightened nature became all-embracing. At that time, he got in touch with his enlightened nature and started expounding the Avatamsaka Sutra. His mind was pure and tranquil, and held great selfless vows. His mind was full of clarity.

The Sutra of innumerable Meanings is the essence of the Lotus Sutra. It teaches the way of Bodhisattva, which entails making aspirations to go amongst people to serve and reaching out to those in suffering. We must study this sutra well. In the Lotus Sutra, beginning with the Chapter of the Dharma Teachers, the Buddha began urging people to be bodhisattvas.

This is the same as what I often say, “We need to recruit living bodhisattvas.”  Otherwise, without young people to shoulder the work, how do we pass on the Dharma? Therefore, we must recruit young people. Recently, I often mention that the Chapter of Emerging from the Earth point s out the direction of spiritual cultivation.

If we want to become bodhisattvas, we must create the path ourselves. The sutra shows us life’s principles, pointing to us the right path to walk on. So, in reading sutra and listening to their explanations, merely reading them does not grant us merits. If you don’t practice the teachings, we are not on the path. Who is to create the path? Each one of us must create the path on our own.

Ordinary people is capable of walking this path, however, most people are lost. Now that we know the direction, we must work hard to create this path. The path may be covered by weeds and shrubs which haven’t been cleared away for a long time. We are all ordinary people who are lost. It seems like there is no path ahead of us. What do we do?

Since we know the direction, we need to create the path ourselves. We create our own Bodhisattvas Path and invite everyone to join us in creating a broad and smooth path. You’ve probably all heard of this in the past two or three days. The path is meant to be created by ourselves.

Once we’ve created the path, everyone can join us in paving it. This is the way to deliver all beings. By paving this path and making it smooth, future generations can walk on it and pass on the Jing Si Dharma lineage for eons to come. The Dharma lineage must be passed on. That is why the Buddha wanted people to be bodhisattvas and that is why we recruit living bodhisattvas. This is what Tzu Chi volunteers must do.

The Buddha taught us that the essence of the mind, the Buddha, and all beings are the same. We need to emulate the Buddha’s heart. The Buddha loves all the beings, including all creatures in this world, no matter where they are. The Buddha loves them all.

Therefore, in emulating the Buddha’s heart, no matter where people are, when they are in suffering, we empathize with them; we reach out to them to alleviate their suffering. These are (the principles) that Tzu Chi volunteers follow.

Thus, we cultivate sincerity, integrity, good faith, and honesty, while serving with the spirit of loving-kindness, compassion, joy, and equanimity. We know these teachings, now we must practice them. Now that we know the Bodhisattvas Path, we must walk the path to its destination.

All in all, Tzu Chi’s mission statement is all about walking the Bodhisattvas Path. Moreover, we must put the correct Dharma in action. We must invite people to create this path and guide everyone to pave it with us. We must make the vow to walk the path life after life.

Volunteers, we must live up to the name of living bodhisattvas. We must be bodhisattvas that go amongst people to serve. Please be mindful. You must read the Sutra of innumerable Meanings; make it as your daily study. This is my expectation to you. We hope that we, as well as those who have not heard the Dharma nor joined Tzu Chi, will understand the Great Way of Truth.

Everyone must bring forth their love to do good. That is how we purify people’s hearts. Not only do we purify our own heart, we also need to make a vow to purify other people’s heart. Thus, knowing the Great Way of Truth ourselves is not enough; we must also let everyone know about it.

In accepting the Buddha’s teachings, we take refuge in the Buddha, and Dharma, and the Sangha. The Dharma cannot spread in this world without the Shanghas. Only with the three together can the Dharma spread in the world. The Dharma can only be spread in the world if people can see the principles being actualized in events.

Therefore, in safeguarding the Dharma to make it everlasting, we need to support the Sangha. We must understand that spreading the Dharma takes a lot of efforts. I hope everyone will be someone who learns, spreads, and talks about the Dharma. Do you understand? (Yes.)

The Dharma is everywhere in our daily lives. Everything we see and hear can be Dharma. When we diligently share good teachings, inspirational stories of good people, and good deeds with everyone, we are spreading the Dharma. Can you do that? (Yes.)

Good. You have my sincere blessings. Time passes and never stops. Thus, we must make the most of every moment. We must take solid steps on this path, from choosing the direction, creating the path, to paving it. We must make progress every day. May you cultivate both blessings and wisdom. It takes a lot of diligence to make progress on the Bodhisattvas Path.

I hope that after you are certified, (you) will shoulder the responsibility of relieving the sufferings in this world. Can you do that? (Yes, we can.) Good. You have my blessings. Thank you, and blessings to you.
