20171103老有大用人間寶Living a Useful and Valuable Life in Old Age

Hello, Xiangzhi. Did you helped your husband take a shower? Have you fed him?
Yes, he just finished eating. I am so glad to see you today and have someone to talk.

Try to keep your heart open; that way, you’ll stay health. Thank you, and best wishes to you. Everything will be ok. Thank you. Hang in there.

When I think about Mama Meifang, she’s truly someone who will keep serving until her last breath. She never stops. As long as there’s something for her to do, she says yea and does it.

We see this volunteer in Miaoli. She is my age, and she volunteers with younger volunteers in their middle-age. She is such a dedicated Tzu Chi volunteer. She travels to the mountains to care for and help others.

Granny! Come on out. Come out to meet us, we’re here, Granny. Watch your steps. (OK.)

It seems that, after all this time, she has developed a closer relationship with this family. Look at her; she goes around the house as if it were her own. She brought the ingredients herself and stared cooking in the kitchen. (They made delicious dishes.) See how she is still so full of life at this age, hugging everyone she meets. What she does is truly not easy. This is how one become close to others. Being able to achieve this is truly not easy.

She also exerts her strength in gentleness. (There is a care recipient,) a man who is slightly younger than she is. She guides him to (have good living habits). This man has a bad habits; he likes to buy things. See, his home is filled with bags and bags of things he bought.

Stop buying things because your refrigerator is already full. I know. It’ll take you a few months to finish all these. Ok. I get it. Got it? We’ll check on you in two days. All right. You should tidy up all these stuff. Ok.Ok.

The things he keeps become garbage as he hoards things. She guides him with kind words. Don’t they look like a family? She is truly admirable. She is also good at leading other volunteers. For this group of middle-aged commissioners who are younger than her. She has done a good job in leading them.

On their way to visit care recipients, she tell them what she knows. For example, when is Chinese long bean ready to harvest so it would taste good? Indeed, the saying is true that “old people are like treasures.” For these volunteers, she is like a treasure with limitless (knowledge). This is really touching.

We can see the nursing home in the Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital. It has contributed greatly in providing long-term care serves. Elderly in severe condition can receive care there. Some of them have even recovered well enough to go home and enjoy a happy life with family.

Their family is very grateful. Besides the elderly, here is a young man who came to our nursing home. He received good care and was able to start rehabilitation.

At first, the doctor said I might need to be in wheelchair for life. Maybe this is a miracle.

He had a spiral injury and couldn’t move. After rehabilitation, he now joins our team of volunteers, motivation grandpas and grandmas to make them more energetic.

Through rehabilitation, he could now walk. He even came to see me and talked to me. For people in severe condition, our nursing home gives them a correct direction in life, a ray of hope to recover and go home. This is truly moving.

Now, with government’s long-term care plan, the Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital opened a day care center in its nursing home. It provides day care services to adults .Elderly can go there and feel comfortable and at ease in both body and mind.

Therefore, this place is truly a paradise for the elderly. It is a place to help them slow down physical deterioration. The center is well-designed and has been renovated. At its opening day, a true contrarian was there. That person was our volunteer Ms. Cai Kuan. She is already a hundred years old and still serves as a hospital volunteer. Because of the opening of this day care center, Ms. Cai Kuan attended the opening ceremony.

In Taiwan, Tzu Chi volunteers began with the charity mission and then cared for patients. Now, we have started long-term care services. Whatever our society needs, Tzu Chi volunteers are willing to take on the responsibility and give of themselves without asking for anything in return. Tzu Chi volunteers enjoy serving others. That’s their purpose in life.

Yesterday, we had a board meeting for our education mission. I was moved to Prof. Yang. He is 98 years old. All through the founding of Tzu Chi Hospital, (medical) school, and so on, he has been dedicating himself to Tzu Chi’s medical mission. Despite the long travel, he still goes to help in Tzu Chi’s Hospitals in Dalin and Taichung. This is really admirable. He still has very good eyesight and hearing.

Yesterday, after the board meeting, he came to me and said”I care about you every day. I have instructed someone close to you to keep track your health records and keep me informed.” I’m one of the person whose health records he is tracking. I am really touched and grateful. He also said, “If you spare some time for me, I will teach you how to stay healthy.” I truly admire and respect him.

This is really touching. There is so much to be grateful for. We should appreciate the elderly. As such an advanced age, there are so many who truly care for Tzu Chi and everyone. This is indeed touching.
