20171023精進人生聚善緣 Cultivating a Diligent Life

Volunteers have been working hard every day. There were several events that took place this month in Hualien. Some of them were annual gatherings, such as the TIMA Convention in early October.

After that we had the annual meeting of the Tzu Chi Medical Foundation. There was also the training session for volunteers of Taipei which was held in Hualian. In addition, over 600 volunteers from the U.S. came to attend a training camp in Hualien.

Including the supporting volunteers, there were close to 1,000 people at the Hualien Jing Si Hall. After that the annual spiritual retreat for Tzu Chi staff took place. I was touched to hear the staff’s sharings.

Early Saturday morning, they walked to the Abode from the Jing Si Hall. As a group, they walked in a neat procession showing their hearts are as one. After they arrived at the Abode, they did various tasks with the monastics and experienced vegetable farming.

“Ah, you pulled out a vegetable plant!”
“Ah, Amituofo.”
“Just plant it back in the soil.”

“Because the vegetable plant and the weed look alike. They’re both green. I did it too fast and failed to notice it.”
“Are you ready?” “Yes.” “Then, let’s go!” “Go.”
Do it like this and cut it.

“Supt. Lai did the most beautiful job. Supt. Chao, your plate needs to be rearranged. It should be like this.” “I need to turn it over?” “Yours is on the wrong side.”

“You mean like this?” “Yes, yes.”
“This is the first time I see someone turning the cutting board.”

We see superintendents and a chancellor helping out in the kitchen. They’re all doctors and doctorates, yet they don’t know what to do in the kitchen.

“This is not easy, so slippery.”
“Supt Lin, this slipped to the edge. You didn’t pass.”
“This part is messy.”
“Yes, you failed. Out of these doctors, Supt. Chien is the one who cooks most often.”

How come Supt. Chien is so familiar with cooking? Because he often participates in camp activities. He has experience with vegetable farming. All in all, people have unlimited potential.

Through practice they’ll get good at it. With more practice, they’ll master it. After all, there are many things to learn in life, but this can be tiring. We also see what’s happening around the world.

Wildfires are still burning across vast areas. We see wildfires starting in France now. It seems that the whole forest is damaged. The trees can no longer release oxygen. The wildfires produce a lot of pollution.

We see the aftermath of the earthquake in Mexico. Gradually, Tzu Chi volunteers have been connecting with the locals.

“In this town, we know each other and what’s happening. We have a history here, and we support each other. We’ve helped each other in times of need.”

“The open space provided a good opportunity for people to come. This is the town center. Even people who didn’t know about this event came. They heard Tzu Chi’s story.

Tzu Chi volunteers led a training session for the locals and took the Dharma there to calm people’s hearts. Although we have not distributed aid to them, we need to build a rapport with them first so that they know our sincerity.

There are a lot of affectees, but resources are limited. So, we need to inspire love in people and encourage those who can still manage to care for people who were severely impacted by the quake.

Using Tzu Chi’s way, our volunteers there shared Tzu Chi’s spirit and values to the locals. We have not given them any material aid; the only thing we’ve given them is the Dharma.

With this Dharma, they open up their mind, show smiles on their faces to each other, and interact with one another with love. Right now in Mexico, we have four young Tzu Chi volunteers there.

With their sincerity, they have inspired the locals. Every day, they visit different neighborhoods on foot and interact with the locals. Though they rely on interpreters to communicate with the locals they are able to connect with them.

Such affinities are truly incredible. Hopefully, Tzu Chi’s disaster relief efforts in Mexico may help people in Mexico heal from the trauma. We have many expectations, and meeting them requires people’s effort.

It is natural for people to feel tired. Holding activities is to help attendees understand more about Tzu Chi. It takes time and effort to organize activities, and it is tiring. People may need several days to recover.

Then, they can get back on serving others. This is the spirit of the Jing Si Dharma Lineage. For each activity people come together, and we hope to bring harmony to their heart.

Sometimes, it might he too intensive and the attendees may get tired. But with a few days of rest, they recover. We hope that the attendees can understand more about the Jing Si Dharma Lineage and know that we are paving the Bodhisattva Path for the future.

Bodhisattvas relieve people from suffering and bring them joy. This is the Buddha’s idea of the Bodhisattva’s spirit; they are willing to go anywhere to save all beings.

The Buddha taught us to rely on ourselves. If we want blessings we have to create blessings. If we want to have peace of mind, we have to get rid of our afflictions.

How do people have the affinities to have good relationships with others? Without good affinities, people will not feel happy when they see each other. All in all, we need to create more blessings and get rid of our afflictions and ignorance. That’s how we broaden and open our heart.
