20171101大愛弭災善累積Relieving Suffering with Love and Inspiring Goodness in People

Many people in Congo are living in poverty, suffering from social unrest due to frequent civil clashes. Over 3.2 million people are at risk of starvation and at least 1.4 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Seeing people there suffering from starvation, being forced to flee their homeland, and living in social unrest, I am truly very worried.

Tzu Chi members have been bringing care and aid to impoverished countries or regions, such as Sierra Leone. We offer hot food to those in need there, and are arranging vocational training for them so that they can become financially self-reliant in the future. This entails a long-term aid program we launched in collaboration with local agencies.

In all, there are indeed many people living in poverty around the world. People here in Taiwan are much better off financially, so we once encouraged everyone to eat 80% full as not only is it more healthy, but we can also help others with the remaining 20%. Such will be a great aid to people who suffer from starvation all over the world, and if everyone can do so, more people will certainly be relieved of suffering.

Many cases of suffering around the world have a historical background. For example, domestic factors have led to poverty and food insecurity in Sierra Leone and Congo. No matter what historical backgrounds there are, what we see now is many people who are still suffering and in need of our help. While many people are in need, there are also many living an affluent life. Yet, all living beings are subject to collective negative karma.

For example, nowadays air pollution is so severe and is taking place on such a large scale that none of us can remain uninfluenced. In addition, disasters may come about at any time.

See the wildfires in North California. The extensive wildfires have been raging on, blazing from forests to residential communities. As the fires are hard to contain, over 8,000 houses have been burned down. So, all tangible things in the world undergo the process of formation, continuation, destruction, and annihilation, and our time now is in the era of decay where disasters occur frequently. This is what the Buddha foretold.

According to the Buddha, our time would be full of disasters and suffering as it enters into the phase of destruction and annihilation. More and more disasters would take place around the world, and no one could get away. So, what can we do to quell disasters and keep annihilation at bay? The only way for us to achieve this is to live with sincere piety and vigilant care as well as give with love to relieve suffering.

We see that Tzu Chi members from five countries and regions have arrived in Mexico to carry out disaster relief. Yet, as there are many people and areas affected, we don’t have enough manpower. So, while bringing aid and care to those affected, we also encourage them to volunteer with us and reach out to other needy people with love.

Priceless are life’s true principles we share with them to help them leave their distress behind and put on smiles again. By encouraging them to serve as volunteers, we also hope they can understand that although they are disaster victims, there are people worse off, so they can open up their hearts and liven up to reach out to others in need. Many people have been inspired, and a great force to help the needy has been formed. This is truly heartening.

We also see that in the aftermath of severe flooding in Malaysia in 2014, Tzu Chi members also went there to serve, doing all they can to help those affected. At first, many people turned us down because they are Muslims, but gradually, they were moved by our sincerity. They accepted our help and treated us like their own families.

With our experience in international relief, we helped carry out post-disaster recovery and did cleanup work starting with schools so that students could resume their studies and their parents could focus on recovery work. Then, they came to understand that Tzu Chi is a Buddhist organization with members who give selfless love.

For a period of around two weeks, we held supply distributions there and helped build houses for those who had been rendered homeless and were in great need of help. This is how Tzu Chi members reach out to relieve people’s suffering. We see hoe our local volunteers there work hard to do recycling and gather the money from selling recyclables to help those in need.

At first, I didn’t want others to see me collecting carton boxes. I’d be embarrassed and kept my head down waiting till there was no one around. Now, I don’t feel embarrasses anymore. I just focus on what I want to do. People have asked me how I could help others with such little money from the recyclables. I replied by saying that things will be different if I collect recyclables every day or if everyone joins in the recycling work.

If I get one MYR dollar aday, then I’ll earn 30 MYR dollars a month. If two people do recycling, then there’ll be 60 MYR dollars, enough to help people.

I gather recyclables and give them to my boss to sell and help those in need.

See how they gather money little by little to help those in need. This is really very touching to see. In all, whether in the past or at present, Tzu Chi volunteers all over the world have been giving with love and sincere piety to relieve countless people from suffering and bring stability and hope to society. The y are true admirable.
