20171008轉識為智勤精進Diligently Transforming our Consciousnesses into Wisdoms

Look at what’s happening in the world today, (time is running out in saving our world.) I think is also running out for me because life diminishes with each passing by day. I don’t know how much time I have left to nurture my wisdom-life in this cultivation ground for living bodhisattvas.  I don’t know how much time I still have.

Volunteers, that is how I feel and I hope you feel the same way too, as we age day by day. Some of you have known me for twenty, thirty, or forty years. That’s also how long I’ve known you. We all have changed since then. Back then, some of you were in your prime, and I was just entering my old age. For some, we were in our prime. But now, I am entering elder hood, not just getting older.

Everyone, we must seize time. Life is impermanent. The time we can truly utilize is the present moment. Now we’re still healthy and can move about, we can do what we want to do. Do not wait until our bodies can no longer do what we want. When the dying hours come, we don’t know where our karma will lead us. We have no control over anything in these last moments.

What we see is like being in a dream with no control, and when the time comes, we go with what we see. When we open our eyes, our next life starts. Our direct and circumstantial retributions have (already determined where we are born.) To have a vision for our next life, we must seize the time now to carry out our goals. If we set our direction right, every step brings us closer to our goals.

Whatever we have accomplished, the fruit we reap come from our directions. In my morning Dharma talks, I have been reminding everyone to transform our consciousnesses into wisdoms. Those who listen to the Dharma talks are very clear about this concept. I have always wanted to help my disciples achieve more. In listen to the dharma talks, do not forget the words like water passing through a pipe. I don’t want that to happen.

Every time when I talk about an important part of a chapter in the sutra, I will reiterate it for many days to the point that everyone can remember it by heart and apply it to their daily life. This time, volunteers from Changsha of China came to Hualien and reported their relief work in july that lasted more than 20 days.

On July 2, we began disaster survey under the guidance of Tzu Chi Headquarters in Taiwan. We were rather nervous and timid, because volunteers from Changsha never participated in disaster relief before. Moreover, there were only around 40 volunteers, so we were afraid of being short on manpower. However, we also felt that we shouldn’t think too much, so we just went ahead and did it.

We then started our relief work. We were most thankful to volunteers from Suzhou and Guangzhou who came to join us on July 5 and brought us much faith, perseverance, and courage. From July2 to July 13, it was the emergency phase of our relief work. In interacting with the affectees, I felt that our material aid might only give them limited help.

More importantly, our interaction with them gave them confidence and strength to get back on their feet. After that, we held a tuition aid distribution in Hueitang Town in Ningxiang. We visited around 700 families and 24 families had children starting a new semester soon. So, we worked with the local government (and quickly distributed the tuition aid.)

Some students said that they felt unfortunate and forgotten by society before. Then, they received our aid. Now, they feel encouraged to study hard so they can give back to society. They also said that they want to become a person who spreads Great Love. We were very touched by them. We were touched by the government too.

Master has created a true path. Although carrying out disaster relief took a lot of hard work and time, through devoting ourselves to the relief work, we come to understand where the true path lies.

When the flood came and I saw the scene, I was very upset. I wanted to give up. Why? Because all equipment was ruined.  I can stand on my feet agein because of Tzu Chi brothers and sisters. They care for me and came to help me with cleanup after the floodwater receded. That really moved me. Because of the care and warmth they gave me, I regained my confidence to rebuild my clinic.

So, my wife and I vowed that we will be the first volunteers to start and promote recycling work in Langli.

In their report, the things they do and the way they interact with people are all very much in line with my teaching in the Dharma talk. They applied my teachings in the relief work. I feel comforted despite that it’s a lot of work for me to prepare the Dharma talk. Every morning, I prepare for the talk every early.

Because volunteers around the world listen to it, I hope those who do not understand Taiwanese can read the verses I wrote. That is why I put in a lot of effort and thoughts in coming up with the verses. After meetings, I go back to my study; I do not waste a single minute. I always sit at my desk and work on tomorrow’s Dharma talk. Sometimes I don’t have the time to do so.

Hence, the next morning, after making my prostration to the Buddha, I use some time to prepare my talk. It was truly rushed. After the Dharma talk, I have less than 30 minutes to eat breakfast and (get ready for the Morning Volunteer Assembly.) I don’t even have time to watch the morning news. The Morning Volunteer Assembly starts at 7 a.m. and finishes at 8:30 a.m. Before 9:30 a.m., my meeting starts. This is how I start my day. This is how I spend my time.

Volunteers, I am striving to use my time and not waste a single moments my time is running out. Everyone, we must have a deep understanding of our life. As our life diminishes, we must grow in wisdom-life. Time continues to pass, and our life continues to diminish. We must seize the time to grow our wisdom-life while we can still think freely and move about freely. So, we need to be mindful with everything we do.
