20170920聯合關懷不缺席Inspiring Goodness in People in the Wake of Disaster

Coincidentally, just about two hours after a memorial service was held for those who had lost their lives in the strong quake on the same day 32 years ago in Mexico, a magnitude-7.1 earthquake struck, also leaving a trail of destruction. In all, there are many natural disasters happening.

We also see that Italy was hit by four earthquakes within two months last year, resulting in a great extent of damage. I’m truly grateful to our volunteers in Europe. Though there aren’t many of them in each country, they work in unity, and whenever a disaster hits, they mobilize to bring care and relief supplies to those affected.

I’m also very grateful to Mr. Pfaff, our volunteer in Germany, and his wife, Chen Shu-wei. They are always enthusiastic and sincere, never absent from our events. In particular, Mr. Pfaff, who is not well himself, still helps with every event of ours. His spirit and the example he’s set has truly brought together our volunteers in Europe. This time, he also went to Italy to help with a tuition aid distribution, which is a part of Tzu Chi’s long-term care for those affected.

Although Tzu Chi volunteers would say: “Sorry we took so long, they are much more efficient than the government agencies. Tzu Chi’s distribution of supplies has enlivened the victims’ hope for the future.

Visso is my father’s hometown. Tzu Chi volunteers are here to offer care and aid, bringing warmth to those affected. This truly means a lot to me.

I’m very touched that a local entrepreneur is very willing to give of himself. His help gives us hope that more people there will be inspired to give too. Indeed, I hope that everyone can work to purify people’s minds and inspire them to go to the aid of the needy. I often say that we really must inspire sincere piety in people and encourage them to practice vegetarianism. This is an important thing for us all to do. It’s many wish that we can inspire sincere piety in everyone all around the world.

We must work hard to guide people to walk the Bodhisattva Path and reach out. Only by sharing the Dharma with people can we truly purify people’s minds. It is important that true principles be applied in people and things if we are to make a difference. Especially in this world of suffering, we must live out the Dharma in matters of life. Only then can we truly relieve suffering with the Dharma. This is very important.

If we take in the Dharma with joy and seemingly come to realize what it means to be all-embracing, yet we don’t actually truly open up our hearts and are still intolerant of people whose opinions differ from ours, then we don’t truly understand the Dharma, and we still lack the virtues to guide people to enlightenment. So, in practicing spiritual cultivation, we need to cultivate virtues. As we gain insight from the Dharma and further live it out, our virtues also grow.

When we have virtues, people will have faith in our words and conduct. In all, we must truly understand and live out the Dharma before sharing it with others. Time is really pressing, and we need to seize time to relieve the suffering of many people around the world.

We see the devastation caused by Hurricane Harvey. The affected area is so vast that we have only surveyed less than one-tenth of it, and our relief supply distribution progress is less than one-fourth of what has been scheduled. Also, more and more people are found in need of help. Everyone, we must be grateful to our volunteers there. It’s been over 20 days since they began the truly hard relief work.

This time, the number of our volunteers involved is record-breaking high in our history in the U.S. Entrepreneurs, locals, and even Vietnam immigrants all came forth to help. This is truly very touching, and we should be grateful that so many people pitch in to help with the relief work. Indeed, we need to give of ourselves so that we can inspire goodness in people and relieve suffering in the world.

In all, in times of safety and peace, we should remember how we received help in times of suffering. When Taiwan was struck by a major earthquake in 1999, a strong typhoon in 2009, or other disastrous events, we also had relief aid and supplies from around the world. We also see that in many countries, even if people there are impoverished, they are all willing to help the worse off by donating what they can.

Take for example an environmental sanitation worker in China. Having received aid from Tzu Chi, he’s been inspired to give and saves one RMB dollar in the coin bank every day. Many people admire his dedication. Indeed, our acts of goodness can move those around us. As time passes, our life also diminishes. We must seize time to give with sincere piety and inspire many more people to give as well.

This is how we work to inspire people to join our rank, and we should continue to do so in order to purify people’s minds. Fundraising is not only meant to inspire people to make donations, but most importantly, it is also to inspire love in everyone.
