20170913虔誠祈禱齊賑災Giving Rise to Goodness to Quell Disasters

We need to live each day with vigilant care and sincere piety. In recent days, people in Taiwan have been paying close attention to Typhoon Talim. The typhoon, initially forecast to make landfall around Taidong or Hualien, has been turning northward. This is how weather systems are closely related to the collective karma of all living beings. To quell disasters, we must uphold this belief and always live with sincere piety.

What does it mean to live with sincere piety? We held a prayer ceremony for the auspicious month. A drum-and-bell performance took place despite the rain, and the participants, wearing raincoats, concentrated on the performance. They watched the ceremony, and prayed while practicing walking meditation.

They attended the ceremony regardless of the rain as they hope to promote the idea that the seventh lunar month is an auspicious month. They hope that instead of viewing the month as the Ghost Month, according to tradition, people can instead look at it with correct beliefs and views. With this aspiration in mind, they attended the ceremony despite the rain, single-mindedly making prayers with sincere piety.

They all hold correct views towards the month, and they were moved by the ceremony as they all harbor sincere piety in their hearts. We need to uphold correct beliefs and views unwaveringly and move forward on the Bodhisattva Path with steadfast steps. This is what we must work hard to do. This is also what we must seize time to do as there are more and more disasters in the world.

We must stay vigilant and pray with sincere piety that Typhoon Talim will lessen in power. According to the forecast, it is strengthening in power, and its track is still likely to change. If it makes an abrupt turn, it may affect Taiwan to a greater extent. So, we need to stay alert and pray with sincere piety. We pray what it can lessen in power while still at sea.

In the U.S., Hurricane Harvey has brought great damage to Houston, Texas. This year, our volunteers in the U.S. planned to hold large cultural events in some states, featuring the China Disabled People's Performing Art Troupe. Many of our donating members have been invited, and most of the tickets have been sold out. Two performances were scheduled on Sept. 10 in Dallas, followed by Houston.

Yet, as the hurricane made landfall in Houston, the performance there was cancelled. As some of those affected in Houston took refuge in Dallas, our volunteers in Dallas had to work on the victims' placement and relief aid provision while also helping organize the cultural event so that the troupe could present performances as scheduled.

Yesterday, the troupe came to our local office and had a videoconference with me. We were very happy to see one another. I'm truly grateful that the troupe not only presented the two performances unpaid, but also went with our volunteer, Ji Cheng, to bring care to those who stayed in shelters. Seeing how they interacted with those affected with warm care, I'm truly very moved. Even more touching is that the ticket revenue will go to help those in need.

"The "Thousands of Helping Hands" charity art performance that we have planned for five months was cancelled due to the hurricane, yet nearly all the funds collected through admission tickets, donations, and advertising were not asked for a refund. Rather, all the parties involved wanted to aid the affected with the funds. Although they couldn't see the performance, each of them acted just like "the Bodhisattva of a Thousand Hands" reaching out to help those in need. "

Indeed, they're just like " the Bodhisattva of a Thousand Hands. " How meaningful it is to use the funds to relieve the suffering of those affected. In all, there are many touching stories in the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. Our volunteers have been holding relief distribution events and they have also called on youths to help with cleanup work. Indeed, if everyone can give and help, a powerful force can be formed to provide aid.

We also see that our volunteers are sincerely pious in encouraging people to go vegetarian and make donations to show reverence to Mother Nature and pool together everyone's love. I'm truly grateful to our volunteers. As the powerful force of the hurricane forms, another force of goodness has come together.

We need more people to join our ranks as we see Hurricane Irma wreaking havoc in many Caribbean islands, such as Sint Maarten. We have Tzu Chi volunteers there as well. Yesterday, our Tzu Chi commissioner, Ci Xi, sent us messages. She shouldered the responsibility of giving out the rice from Taiwan. This time, when the rice arrived there, the hurricane was also approaching. So, it was very important for her to safeguard the 20 tons of rice.

Hurricane Irma left a trail of destruction all over the island. Her home was also damaged. Nonetheless, in the aftermath of the disaster, she gave out the rice in a timely manner. She runs a bakery with her brother, and they also gave out bread. See how much on can achieve if one is willing to give. There are also many other touching stories. Yet, I have no time to share all of them. Indeed, time is pressing, and we need to seize time to do what is right.
