20171022以法滋潤離災難 Nurturing Our Heart with the Dharma to Mitigate Disasters

Indeed, impermanence is a life’s truth, which we constantly see in our word. The Buddha said that our world is like a house on fire; we can see this happening now. What is the cause of that? Its root is in humanity. Our daily activities accumulate and create an effect. Although each of our activity may seem insignificant, when these activities add up, they create a huge effect.

We need to truly reflect on our actions and awaken to their consequences. We must know that our world has gone ill. So, what is the cure for it? It is the wondrous Dharma. The Buddha kept encouraging people to spread the Dharma. If the Dharma is not spread, the future of our world will be at stake.

This is something that I have been mentioning. I feel that the world needs the Dharma more than ever as people’s heart are still filled with afflictions and impurities, such as bias and attachment. In fact, the length of our life varies, and no one has control over it. However, we need to know clearly that we can broaden the scope of our life, and add values to our life to make it meaningful.

We can do this when we adopt the philosophy of living our life not only for ourselves but also for all living beings, as well as serving those in suffering. When we live our life this way, we broaden the scope of our life. To alleviate any being from suffering, we must apply wondrous observation, bring out our conscience, and give of ourselves to benefit others. We are able to do this when we understand that our life and the life of all other living beings are one.

Our view on life is completed changed. The Buddha teaches us that there are all kinds of beings in this world, including animals. Humans are also animated life forms, and animals too. The Buddha vowed to deliver all beings; his vow was very clear. He meant not only humans but all other beings. He taught people to expand their love to animals and to protect their lives.

We come to understand that each life form has its reason for existence and its natural habitat; we should respect and cherish them and protect their habitats. If we know to do this along with protecting their lives, we will naturally do the same for humans. With this mindset, when we give of ourselves to help people, we do it with love and kindness.

The Lotus Sutra says that ordinary people have little blessings. This is because they are reluctant to give of themselves. They have few virtues because they don’t cherish their potential to do good. Ordinary people spend their life chasing after success, fame and fortune. They waste their lives and their potential of benefiting others. They create negative karma due to love, hatred, affection, and revenge; they are in conflict between good or evil.

They can’t even figure out their own thoughts. At times, their conscience is at work, so they do good deeds. But, when they go against their conscience for fame or personal gain, they fight to benefit themselves. Their mind gets deluded with ignorance, which creates conflicts among people, even injure lives. Such is a way of ordinary people.

However, we are learning from the Buddha about his enlightened love. We know to live in peace with other people as well as other beings. We bring out our potential to serve all beings with Great Love. Now, we really need to open up our heart to receive the Dharma. Let the essence of Dharma nurture our heart.

“The Parable of Medicinal Herbs” of Lotus Sutra says that the Dharma is like water; only with the Dharma can we quench the thirst in our heart. Nowadays, people suffer either from water shortage or flood and excessive rain. This shows that nature and its climate are out of balance. The imbalance comes from people’s imbalance minds. We need to quiet our mind and keep our heart pure and tranquil so that we can have right thinking.

We must take responsibility for what we have done. For many lives, we have been creating negative karma and accumulating ignorance as well as affliction. Now, we are facing the retributions of living beings’ collective karma. The world and people’s minds are unwell. As we face this, we truly feel sad about it. How do we apply the wondrous Dharma to help people in this time to interact in a positive way?

How do we take care of the world? I sincerely hope that we can all take action to harmonize people’s heart and bring peace to society. This is a must. We must have faith that with determination, we can overcome and difficulty. With love and determination, we can accomplish many things.
