20170929 大愛會合續馳援Coming Together in Great Love for Disaster Relief

It’s been four to five days since our volunteers arrived Mexico. Wherever they went, they encountered kindhearted people.

The local mobilized themselves and set up distribution points in the disaster areas one after another. They managed the disaster relief and maintained order. They organized themselves; some people participated in cleanups.

Some people donated supplies and brought them to the points. But, the donated goods came in varieties and were all piled up. The people there are really kindhearted. They just need coordination there.

“I found that the people here are very pure hearted. From their eyes, you can see their sincerity. By talking to them, we found out that this place has karmic affinity with Tzu Chi. We are looking for places to hold distribution or free clinics here.”

We have met many kindhearted people in Mexico who have the same goal as us. This is a good karmic affinity we have in Mexico. Volunteers met people who have religious faith.

For people with religious faith, the locals put their faith in God, and we follow the Buddha’s teachings. We have to diligently walk on the Bodhisattva Path with the Buddha’s teachings.

慈濟人這樣的自動自發,發自於內心的誠懇,佛陀的教導,方向已經知道。就是這樣的方向,菩薩道要自己開道。
Tzu Chi volunteers took the initiative and went to Mexico out of their sincerity. They knew the Buddha’s teachings and what they need to do. Having this direction in mind, they need to create the Bodhisattva Path themselves.

From faraway places, volunteers heads straight to the disaster areas and begin to create a straight Bodhi Path. Some of them took a flight from California to Mexico. Volunteers are making their way through disaster areas, and looking for local people and government to start aid relief.

The Buddha has pointed us a path, which is the Bodhisattva Path. We have to take initiative to help people when we see them in suffering. Everyone has innate kindness. People with kindness resonate with one another. Naturally, they will get together for a common goal. Without being asked, they volunteered to help. We offer help with a heart of piety, sincerity, and genuineness.

As long as we are sincere, we will not be biased and judge people by their religions. Instead, we put our love together and come together as one with selfless Great Love. With Tzu Chi volunteers and the locals coming together, they form a great power.

Our Tzu Chi volunteers and the locals have met. We are beginning to work with the Taiwanese businesspeople there as well as the locals, including those who are faithfully religious. We have gotten in touch with the local government to find out how to carry out disaster relief.

Our plan now is to figure out a way to distribute aid soon; what practical goods to distribute, and how to distribute them. However, we are also really worried about whether the food, cash or cash cards will be used for purposes other than emergency relief. These are what volunteers are assessing now.

Yes, to provide relief, we need compassion as well as wisdom. Delivering a successful disaster relief tests our volunteers’ wisdom. We need to ensure that our aid directly help the affected families sustain their life and keep them nourished. Our aid should not be used to get harmful substances. We need to be mindful to prevent such possibilities.

We hope more people will learn about the Buddha’s teachings. The Buddha has great compassion for all. It is very important to help living beings by practicing his teachings. I hope the locals will be able to understand the teachings and act out to help people. It will be good if this happens.

Our disaster relief in the U.S. is still ongoing. We’re still distributing aid there. I’m touched to hear that the Mayor of Dickinson in Texas as proclaimed the month of September 2017 as Tzu Chi Month. The city wanted to honor and express their gratitude to Tzu Chi for providing relief to affectees wholeheartedly. This is truly touching.

Our disaster relief has been ongoing after Hurricane Harvey struck Houston, Texas over a month ago. Whereas in Mexico, our volunteers are planning for aid distribution.

All in all, we need to be sincerely pious. Otherwise, the ocean temperatures will continue to rise, leading to more hurricanes in the Atlantic that last longer.

We see that buildings were destroyed in an instance by natural disasters. But, it takes time to recover from the disasters. With more volunteers, we can do more. I feel that we cannot do what we want to do in the given time. As there are many places affected by disasters and the number of affectees increases, I feel there is not enough time to do everything.

It is autumn now in Taiwan, but it is still very hot. Two days ago, Taipei reached 38 degrees Celsius, breaking the record high temperature for autumn. This is abnormal. We should be aware of conserving energy and water in our daily life. We need to all do our part to help people in need and to cherish what we have. We must cherish and conserve water.
