20171013種善德本拔苦難Sowing the Seeds of Goodness to Relieve Sufferings

The opening ceremony of the U.S. volunteers training camp will now begin. I see our volunteers, my disciples, have come to Taiwan. I’m very happy. They are truly devoted bodhisattvas. Right now in the U.S., there’s a wildfire emergency. The wildfires in California are still raging. They haven’t been put out because the wind keeps the fires going. The situation there is very urgent; that is what’s happening right now.

A month ago, there was a severe flood in Texas that covered a wide area. Texas wasn’t the only area affected by hurricane. Miami, Florida was severely affected as well. The hurricane disaster relief truly mobilized volunteers from all over the U.S. They put in tremendous efforts. In whatever states they live in, volunteers went on streets to fundraise.

Whether in the affected area or in their community, they did what they could to help by bringing out the kindness in their hearts. To alleviate people’s suffering they do what they can to help disaster affectees. There are many things to be grateful for. The diligence of the U.S volunteers comes from the spirit of bodhisattva who reaches out to those in suffering. Such is their spiritual cultivation.

At the distribution, we see that volunteers explained Tzu Chi’s coin bank to the aid recipients, so they know the funds came from many individuals’ small donations. They hope to inspire the recipients to do good deeds and bring out their kindness. We inspire love in people by encouraging them to do good deeds. This is something we need to work harder on.

The world we live in now in an era when Dharma is in decline. That’s why we need the Dharma even more and practice it so that disaster affectees can feel the spirit of Buddhism. We need to pass on the Dharma. This is why we have the Jing Si Dharma lineage. We must agree that this is the time for our Dharma lineage and Tzu Chi to take root and reach out to more people in the world. Living bodhisattvas need to create a broad Bodhisattva Path. I am very touched and grateful to the U.S. volunteers.

We also see that the relief work they’ve done has inspired many locals. Two city mayors were grateful to Tzu Chi’s help and love and proclaimed a month as a Tzu Chi Month. Another city and a county have also designated a day as a Tzu Chi Day. All in all, the love and appreciation between volunteers and the locals have become a part of Tzu Chi’s history.

The Lotus Sutra has 28 chapters. The first 14 chapters talk about the Buddha’s earthly life and teaching, which we have covered. From Chapter 15 and on, the teachings are about what it takes to be a Bodhisattva and the eternal nature of the Buddha, which are harder to understand. But such principles can be seen in our world if we pay attention to them mindfully. We can see these profound principles in our daily life and that they are closely connected to our life. Profound principles are found in daily events. So, we have to be truly mindful.

Today is October 13; it is important date in Tzu Chi’s history. On this day in 2001, Tzu Chi launched the “Spread the Seeds of Love” campaign. It is called “Spread the Seeds of Love” because we wish to inspire everyone to harbor kindness in their heart. In 2001, the 9/11 attacks happened in the U.S. Also, two typhoons devastated Taiwan; they brought severe disasters to Taiwan. We, we launched the campaign to inspire everyone to spread the seeds of love and help others.

We also see in that year, my Master, Ven, Yin Shun, was at the Jing Si Abode. He spoke a few words and officially launched the campaign. He gave out the prayer cards to my monastic disciples at the Abode. At the same time, I was at the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, talking about the campaign. The “Spread the Seeds of Love” campaign was to purify people’s hearts.

More and more disasters have been happening in this world. We should be vigilant and spring into action to mitigate disasters. People’s hearts need to be purified, and people need to do good deeds. That was why we started this campaign.

A prayer ceremony was held that evening at the Tzu Chi Guandu Campus. The ceremonies were broadcasted live on Da Ai TV. We could see the ceremony in the U.S. on TV. The prayer ceremony in the U.S. started at 7 a.m., and here in Taiwan the ceremony started at 7 p.m. at the Tzu Chi Guandu campus. Mr. Eugene Duh was there and tolled the bell. Then, everyone started praying piously.

There were truly many disaster and impermanence happening at that time. From September to October, we were very concerned and had many meetings. During this time, many disasters happened, so we thought about ways for everyone to remember the tragic days and to bear in mind the fires, typhoons, and flood disasters that happened. We came up with a campaign and called on everyone to do good deeds and be vigilant.

It’s been many years since then. We must remember this date in Tzu Chi’s history and the meaning behind the “Spread the Seeds of Love” campaign. We must always remember this and always do good deeds.

We must be careful not to become the kind of people that I mentioned in my morning Dharma talk, those who have little blessings and few virtues. We must develop virtue and sow seeds of Goodness. Don’t become a person with weak wholesome roots, little blessings and few virtues. Everyone, please always be mindful.
