20170830尊重生命啟慈心Practicing Vegetarianism and Sowing Seeds of Love in All

Many people in various countries are facing such a time of suffering that each day may seem like a year to them. In India, Bangladesh, and Nepal, floodwaters have yet to recede, while downpours are still ongoing, bringing unbearable suffering to the locals.

The situation of those affected in Sierra Leone is also very worrying. How will they get through the aftermath of the flood? Yesterday, I had a videoconference with our volunteers in the U.S. I learned that another area in Sierra Leone has also been affected by heavy rains. My heart goes to those affected. Still in suffering, they were hit by another disaster.

The number of people needing relief supplies is higher than we'd expected, and yesterday, one more area was hit by flooding. Just think. Each second may seem as long as a year to them, and it is still unclear how long they have to live in such misery and suffering. This is indeed very heartrending to see.

Also, Texas is still dealing with the aftermath of the hurricane. In panic and fear, those affected helplessly saw their homes destroyed by the strong winds and flooding.

Yesterday, again, I called on everyone to live with sincere piety and vigilant care, and to strictly practice vegetarianism. We must not kill animals. All of us should respect the lives of animals by bringing forth our innate love and goodness. Everyone has innate goodness, which means that none of us would want to see animals killed. Given that, we should all go vegetarian.

Vegetarianism is not for religion's sake, but for the wellbeing of the Earth and our future generations. The craving for meat is simply a surge of desire, and we should all be able to overcome it. It's inconceivable why people cannot do without meat.

Going vegetarian is easy. Yet, unfortunately, many people are not willing to go vegetarian. If we continue to consume meat, we'll create more and more negative karma, and the karma we've created will accumulate to form a very strong karmic force. (To provent disasters induced by such a karmic force, ) all we have to do is live with vigilant care and pray for the peace of the world with sincere piety.

We pray not only for safety and wellbeing, but for peace of mind. To truly have peace of mind, we need to ensure that our Earth and all living beings are safe and well. This is what love truly means. In all, karmic force has brought about more and more disasters around the world. How can we do nothing about it? It's time for all of us to take action. Every day my heart aches when I learn of the disasters that happen around the world.

Yet, the good news is that the storm in Texas has weakened in strength. This is what our staff at the Abode learned of from our volunteers in Texas. In all, the situation is less critical. It's truly a relief to see that the alarming situation has lessened. I often remind you to live with sincere piety and vigilant care.

Yesterday, the floodwater was still high, and our volunteers couldn't go out, so I once again reminded everyone to keep practicing vegetarianism and live with sincere piety and vigilant care at all times. Whenever a disaster hits, Tzu Chi volunteers go to the aid of the affected. During June and July this year, disasters hit various states in the U.S., and our volunteers in the affected states all mobilized for relief work.

In addition, over the past few years, our volunteers in the U.S. have been working hard to inspire love and giving. They have visited more than 20,000 stores, introducing the origins of Tzu Chi and inspiring people to do a good deed every day. Our volunteers mad visits from door to door, sharing Tzu Chi's spirit with anyone they met. To inspire more people to give with love, they tirelessly paid visits to each store.

"I know Tzu Chi uses all donations in charity. So I'll certainly support Tzu Chi. I heard of Tzu Chi a long time ago. It's a familiar name to me. "

Of the over 20,000 store they visited, there are 12,000 ones willing to place coin banks for customers to donate their spare change. This is how we pool everyone's love together. What we hope is to inspire their love, help plant a seed of giving in their hearts, and help them open up to sow blessings.

This is what we most wish for. What matters is not how much they donate but how many people are inspired to give and how deeply they realize life's true principles. I mentioned in my Dharma talk that we need to deeply understand life's principles to genuinely experience life's truths and be truly aligned with the wisdom of the Buddha. This is the way of the Bodhisattva Path---living out the spirit of Bodhisattvas with each step forward.
