20171001寸寸鋪路悟佛心Creating the Bodhisattva Path for Enlightenment

Everything we see around us, such as mountains and rivers, objects big or small, coarse or fine, all undergo change in time. All material objects in this world go through the process of formation, continuation, destruction, and annihilation. With the same principle, humans go through the process of birth, aging, illness, and death. In this world, as we grow, we go through different stages in life, childhood, teenager hood, etc., following the same principle of change like material objects do.

For material objects, the four phases of change are called formation, continuation, destruction, and annihilation; for humans, they are called birth, aging, and death. Although the terms are different, their principle is the same. The same principle applies to the thoughts in our mind, they are called, arising, abiding, changing, and ceasing.

Whenever a thought arises, it stays in our mind for a long or short time. A thought arises in just an instant yet it stays in our mind for a long time. The emotions of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness always reside in our mind, which makes us to give rise to love, hatred, affection, and revenge. The complex entanglement of these emotions leads to greed, anger, and ignorance in people’s mind.

Due to greed, mountains and rivers are destroyed for personal gains. Destruction of nature brings pollution to the natural environment. With nature out of balance, natural disasters will occur frequently. In this world, as time passes, the natural environment and all things that have a form are slowly being destroyed. This is why the time we live in is call the Era of Decay.

The destruction of people’s homes doesn’t always come from natural disasters; some comes from ma-made disasters. In this Era of Decay, people’s minds are going out of balance, and our natural environments also undergoing destructions slowly. The forces of nature truly frightening; we really need to purify people’s hearts quickly.

No matter which religion a person believes in, we should all respect one another and encourage one another to purify people’s hearts and foster love in people. In this era, it is important for everyone to give love. Look at the Tzu Chi volunteers in Africa. In a poor country like Mozambique, people sit on the ground. Though they are poor, they’re willing to help others in whatever small way.

We distributed rice donated by Taiwan to them. They saved and collected the rice bags, cut them open and sewed them into reusable handbags. The bags can then be sold for charity. This is how they contribute. In addition, they grow vegetables, and promote living a frugal life. As they are growing vegetables, then think they should promote vegetarianism because to save the Earth, one has to change one’s lifestyle.

When the vegetables are ready to harvest, they would harvest vegetables. Each volunteer took one vegetable with them. They were a lot of them, all vegetarians. They went to streets to promote vegetarianism, telling people that eating vegetarian is healthy, and can save money and Mother Earth.

They truly have wisdom and love. They promote vegetarianism. In these small ways, they respond to promoting vegetarianism. You see, how could I not mention these good disciples of mine so often? They put my teachings into action. Their small acts amount to a great power despite being poor. We need to be mindful in nurturing the power of love in people. Their sincere prayers reach all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and God.

Many of them are Catholics or Christians, but being a Tzu Chi volunteer does not conflict with their religion. They take in what Tzu Chi has taught them. Then, they start to change their lifestyle, open up their heart and become spiritually rich to give of themselves. They live in a poor environment, and in the past, they were poor spiritually. Now

Now, they still live in a poor environment but they are not poor spiritually. They have learned to be diligent. They know that by working hard, they will produce something and have the strength to help people. In this way, they can help themselves as well as others. They’ve become much more diligent and positive in their life. They are truly diligent.

In recent years, to me, these volunteers are real living bodhisattvas. This is why I often say that volunteers in Africa shine like black pearls. The way they shine is truly inspiring. They shine with their life.

Everyone, we all have the same innate ability to be enlightened like the Buddha. The Buddha said that he could not really give people anything. The Buddha did not bestow anything on people. Rather, he pointed out a direction for people. I also felt that there is a direction for everyone. Everyone has the ability to create a path. (The Buddha) just pointed out the direction. That is all. Whether one becomes a Buddha depends on whether he wants to be a bodhisattva.

When you are willing to be a bodhisattva, you are created a path. The path must be created inch by inch, and paved with love in the same way. This is (Bodhisattva) Path. This is the true value of a living bodhisattva.
