20170818常懷感恩守初心Be Grateful at All Times to Hold on to Our Initial Aspirations

We are truly worried about Nepal. Although we want to help the flood affectees, the roads are still in inaccessible. Disaster areas are still flooded, but the government said it would regulate all relief operations. For those who want to donate goods, they should donate them to the government and let the government carry out the relief. For us, this is a big obstacle, because this kind of coordination might slow down the relief efforts. Yet, there is nothing we can do.

However, we see how animals help out. As the water is so high, the locals use elephants to transport people. See how these gentle animals kneeled in front of people. Look at the humanity in these animals. They display more empathy than humans. This is truly remarkable.

In fact, humans can be cruel. That’s why we now experience collective negative karma. We can see that, with so many droughts, fires and various other disasters, our world has become truly unbalanced. As we live in peace and safety, how can we not feel grateful? I always urge everyone to be grateful all the time. Truly, I feel grateful every day. Only by being grateful can we hold on to our initial aspirations. Without feeling grateful, it would be hard to keep our initial aspirations.

In my morning Dharma talk, I mentioned about aspirations. Only by having initial aspirations, can we develop virtues to interact with others with our good character and attributes. These are all interrelated. This enables us to go amongst people to cultivate our virtue.

Such determination is not frivolous, yet full of love. This all comes from our initial aspirations. The diligence that comes with our initial aspirations rises from a heart of gratitude. This heart of gratitude brings forth our initial aspirations, which helps us to be diligent in our daily life. These are all the steps that we need to go through.

Look at the volunteer Hung-chou, her husband had three affairs with different women. A woman’s heart is very narrow when it comes to extramarital affairs. She could not acceptable it; she wanted to die, because of her husband’s infidelity. Yet she stayed alive and lived in such a pain.

You got these cassette tapes when you first came in touch with Tzu Chi and learned of Buddhism. Through them, you found out the wondrous Dharma and its wisdom.

I was moved to tears when I heard Master’s words.
What did Master say that touched you?

She said that life is impermanent and the land is fragile. It’s in the Sutra of the Bodhisattva’ Eight Realizations. I used to live without knowing the Dharma. The more I listened, the more I was moved. After that, I went to Hualien with Tzu Chi sisters to find out more about Tzu Chi.

At that time, I didn’t think about volunteering with Tzu Chi. Master said to us who came to attend the provincial Tzu Chi gathering, “I’m like an old ox dragging four carts. The four carts refer to Tzu Chi’s four missions: charity, medicine, education and culture. Master said, “All of you who are here today, can you help me move the carts with one of your fingers?” She asked us, and we all said yes. Everybody there said yes.

Yes. When we were about to leave, Master said, “All of you who came here today, please take the seeds of blessings back with you to sow them as much as you can.” We all said yes. At the time, I wanted to commit suicide. After I listened to Master’s Dharma talks and the story of how she raised funds by making baby shoes to start charity work, I was really touched.

I felt that my heart was so narrow while hers was so great. She devoted herself to help so many people whereas I wanted to end my life for one man.  What a big difference. So, I changed my mind set. I thought, “My husband doesn’t need me so I’ll follow this Master. That’s how I became a Tzu Chi volunteer.”

Whenever she has afflictions, she would think of me. As soon as she thinks of me, she naturally becomes more mindful of herself. This is how she cultivates herself. In Tzu Chi, our purpose, our spirits and values and our bodies and actions can all show Dharma. This is how we purify people’s hearts. When doing this with mindfulness, it will also benefit us. When we know our direction in life and we are no longer deluded, we know how to create a path.

With a direction in mind, we open a path by clearing away grass, branches and so on. This volunteer now lives happily because she has found the right direction in life. She was even able to inspire her father to become a Tzu Chi volunteer. This is how she transformed her life.

Actually, feeling trapped in such a situation brings her much suffering. Such suffering comes from the accumulation of ignorance. The best remedy for this is to learn the Dharma and find the correct path in life. That way, we will not be afflicted by the suffering in the world.

Look at Dr. Li Sen-jia of the Yuli Tzu Chi Hospital who is at ease with his illness. Several days ago, the Yuli Tzu Chi Hospital held a concert for Dr. Li to express their gratitude toward him. Everyone is very grateful to him. Throughout his life, he has accumulated a lot of virtues as a doctor which has inspired so many people.

At the age of 80, he still wants to continue serving patients despite his illness. He found out five years ago that he had a terminal cancer. Yet, he continued to work. Even when he was undergoing Targeted Therapy, he still made house calls to patients. Although he has great difficulty walking he still wanted to make his final house calls. Look at his virtue as a doctor. He never wanted to stop serving his patients.

All in all, he has shown the value of life. He has cherished lives and safeguarded lives with love. He has done it all. There are so many things to be grateful for. He has lived his life to the fullest, which is very meaningful. The lives of humans and animals all have their values. We need to respect all lives
