20170804永續資源勵行善Changing Our Lifestyle to Sustain the Earth

We see that, according to researchers, they’ve calculated that August 2 is this year’s Earth Overshoot Day. After that date, we will be consuming resources that exceed the Earth’s capacity to regenerate them. It is like having a debt and we’ll be in debt day after day, month after month for the rest of this year.

This means that our planet is not able to supply enough resources to meet humans’ needs. Right now, people are not awakened to this yet. They continue to exploit nature to manufacture goods, creating never-ending air pollution and an enormous amount of wastes. This is how humans keep on producing waste from useful resources.

With the climate becoming more and more extreme, even if the land can produce a lot of crops, just one extreme weather event is enough to ruin everything. This is truly worrisome. This is also why researchers urge people to consume less and eat less meat. Tzu Chi is not the only one urging these practices. Researches and scientists have found that by consuming less meat and wasting less, people can save the Earth.

Right now, we keep hearing news of disasters all the time. For example, floods began to hit northeastern Thailand on July 5. A few days ago, I had a video conference with Tzu Chi volunteers in Thailand. I heard that the low-lying areas in Ayutthaya are now flooded. So, Tzu Chi volunteers have been carrying out relief work in the past few days.

We are also working hard to get supplies such as blankets and the Jing Si multipurpose folding beds shipped to Thailand. As it’s a large shipment, we hope the local government can help with customs for a smooth delivery.

We also see that Tzu Chi volunteers work hard to recruit new members in the Philippines. Due to Typhoon Haiyan, Tzu Chi has formed good affinities with the locals, and pave a Tzu Chi path there, so now many residents have joined Tzu Chi and participated in our volunteer training program.

We were reminded of the proper things volunteers should do and we were reminded of the teachings of Master that will serve as a guide for the things we’ll do here in Tacloban. Volunteering helps us develop our personality and become bridge that will share the teachings of Master Cheng Yen.

Because we have local volunteers in Leyte, when an earthquake struck central Leyte on July 6th, many local volunteers came to help. Although they were no certified local volunteers there, there were many local volunteers in training coming to help. Before volunteers from Manila arrived, local volunteers had already entered the disaster areas to survey the damage, comfort the affectees and keep Tzu Chi offices updated on the situation. When volunteers from Manila arrived, they coordinated their efforts very well.

Indeed, we need to recruit volunteers locally like sowing seeds. When the seeds begin to sprout, they will break through the soil so that they can grow. The news shoots from the seeds are so powerful that they can break through the soil. Our heart is like a field. When we give rise to a thought of kindness that is like a sprouting seed breaking through our inner-field. The sprouting seeds will grow into big trees.

The local volunteers in training are like tree saplings. Certified Tzu Chi volunteers are like big trees that support and train the local volunteers. In this way, local volunteers took prompt action to carry out disaster relief work. The charitable actions come from our innate kindness. The Bodhisattva seeds in local volunteers’ hearts have been inspired. Many residents were inspired to become volunteers and went to the disaster areas to serve.

You see, not only do we help with their livelihood we also use wholesome teachings to sow seeds of goodness in their hearts. We also share with them life’s principles to let them know the need to do well. We share with them the concept that when everyone does good we can bring peace and safety to our world.

As most people in the Philippines are Catholics, they have religious faith. We share with them the wisdom of Buddhism. They understand how doing good can possibly help them get close to God. We encourage people to do good and get close to Bodhisattvas. Local volunteers walk the Bodhisattva Path. They can help others instead of relying on others for help.

They learned to do small acts of goodness from the story of Tzu Chi’s bamboo bank. We inspire them to do good; we teach them how to recycle, so waste can become something useful, while keep the environment clean. These are multiple ways Tzu Chi volunteers use to help people and the Earth. These concepts are to be used at such a time.

We need to keep on spreading wholesome teachings. Don’t wait until disasters happen. When a disaster unfortunately occurs, we need to be even more active in doing good. Our kindness can comfort people in need and help them live in safety. At the same time, we also need to inspire kindness in them and share with them life’s principles so that they can also do well. That is our goal.

We have to change our lifestyle. Each one of us should start with our eating habits and consuming less. We should eat simple meals with more vegetables, less meat or no meat at all. Scientists explicitly say that we should eat less meat and reduce consumption. This is supported by scientific findings.

Volunteers, every day, we see the life of many people and what’s happening in the world. We need to change our lifestyle by examining ourselves with discipline.
