20170918寸寸鋪路見真情Paving a Path to Spread Love

Refugees of manmade disasters truly suffer a lot. How do they survive each day? It really pains me to see them like this. So many hardships and sufferings are on them. How unbearable it must be. This situation is truly worrying.

Furthermore, the imbalance of the water element has caused severe floods in many places. Take Penang, Malaysia for example, after the flood water receded, impacted households are covered in mud. More than 200 Tzu Chi volunteers were mobilized to help the underprivileged people.

Affected resident, “You are so kind to help us clean up. We wouldn’t have been able to do it on our own. Thank you so much.”

Affected resident Qiu Mei Duan, “Your Master is really kind and good. I am so happy to be able to know such a kind Master.”In Malaysia, there are local volunteers who immediately went to help after the floods. They provided timely comfort and relief to those in need.

That is why it is so important to have people with enlightened love in this world. In June and July, severe floods hit Changsha of Hunan Province in China. The force of nature is truly powerful.

Yet, a group of Tzu Chi volunteers showed up to offer timely relief. The disaster relief took over twenty days. During that time, many volunteers took leave from work. Some volunteers could not travel long distances or help with relief work for a long time, so they offered to babysit the children of the younger volunteers. This way, the younger volunteers could focus on disaster relief work.

During those twenty days, they did the relief work with mindfulness, sincerity, patience, love, thoughtfulness, and piety. In the meeting yesterday, I heard volunteers from China make great vows.

They listen to my morning Dharma talk every day. What they said contains my daily Dharma teachings. They have followed my teachings and carried out the peaceful practices with joy.

They have overcome many difficulties instead of being obstructed by them. They show the Dharma in their action, speech, and thoughts. This is very touching. They are living bodhisattvas. We need to recruit more volunteer bodhisattvas.

With them, our society and the world can be peaceful, harmonious, and safe. With piety, we can cherish our resources, count our blessings, and cut down carbon emissions in our daily life. If more people do this, the scope of environmental protection will be broadened.

Promoting vegetarianism is a great way to protect the environment. The volunteers are doing this. I am comforted and touched to see that. In my videoconference with the U.S. volunteers on Saturday, I was touched and grateful to learn how Tzu Chi volunteers have been serving there for the past twenty-some days.

In the disaster areas, they carried out disaster surveys thoughtfully and meticulously. Especially in Vietnamese communities, some residents don’t speak English, so communication can be a problem.

In such a circumstance, it’s even harder to help them. People living in disadvantaged neighborhoods are even more helpless. Tzu Chi volunteers have helped many people in those communities with the power of love.

On Saturday, volunteers’ main work was holding a distribution in Dickinson, Texas. They gave aid to over 2,000 households on that day. The aid recipients were those in the most need.

The mayor and the police have been very helpful in selecting these recipients for Tzu Chi. There were about 8,000 people in 2,3000 households. There are still over 500 households to receive aid. Together, we will distribute aid to 3,000 households.

Some first responders were also affected by the disaster. Despite this, they still dedicated themselves in saving people, their spirit is truly admirable. For those whose house sustained damage, we will also distribute aid to them. This is something we must do and continue to give what we can.

Volunteers worked really hard for the past few days. To carry out relief work, they had to travel hundreds of kilometers and endured the hot weather. It’s been very challenging for them to work under such conditions.

They’ve worked really hard. When I asked these volunteers whether they felt tired, but they were also very touched. It was especially touching about what happened to our mobile dental van.

Volunteers drove for three days and two nights from California to Texas, across four states. As the vehicle is already over ten years old, it experienced mechanical failures in the middle of night.

Luckily, there was someone who fixed it for them. What’s even more touching was that he did it for free, because our volunteers were going to help people. This person, a stranger to the volunteers, knew the important mission of our mobile dental van.

He was so willing to help and asked nothing in return. See how love can be passed on from one person to another. All in all, there are many warm-hearted, touching stories of people helping one another in this world.

I cannot recount them all. Love is the most beautiful treasure in the world. Our treasure of love is to find ways to help people in communities and give our power of love.
