20170903回報重恩長慧命Paving the Bodhisattva Path in Taitung

I am grateful. This time, people in Taitung worked really hard for the musical adaption of the Sutra of Profound Gratitude to Parents. Tzu Chi volunteers in Taitung were not afraid of undertaking such an enormous task. They initiated this event. I saw everyone practicing diligently. I also heard the participants, both local residents and Tzu Chi volunteers, share their thoughts and experiences on the sutra adaption.

Back in June, I saw volunteers go to schools and practice in different groups. I thought, Act II, Karmic Affinity, is only two minutes long, does it really need so many days to practice? Then, when I went to see them practice, I realized that volunteers explained the story to the children in detail.

“You see, why did the Duddha tell Ven. Ananda to be respectful and grateful to a pile of bones by the road? It’s because they could belong to our family or parents in past lives. So, we should be grateful to them.” That was the story volunteers told the children. Through the sutra story, we show the children the virtues of kindness and filial piety.

I find that, after the presentation, our children would bear in mind the kindness of their parents as well as the love for our society. I believe that is the greatest reward for all participants.

I participated in Act VI, the prodigal Son. What I remembered the most was getting beaten up by others. In that scene, the lady who played my mom came and helped me up. When I saw her face, I thought of my own mother, and how she was also like that to me. Sometimes, I am very rebellious, no matter what she says, and I don’t listen to her. But, whenever I make a mistake, she’s there for me. I feel very sorry toward her.

There were those who played the roles of parents, who are in their middle age, juggling between family and career, and looking after their children. Our senior nurses from the Kuanshan Tzu Chi hospital also participated in the sutra adaption. Working at the hospital, they safeguard lives, protect patients’ health with love, and take on the responsibility as their mission.

This time, they took on the role of mothers in the sutra adaptation. Actually, being nursing professionals, they need to care for their family and children, as well as do their duties at the hospital. There are indeed a lot of responsibilities on them. They understand what it is like (to be a mother). They truly sense this.

Yes. Once they have such a deep understanding that is like they are entering the teachings of the sutra. The participants interpreted the teachings with their bodies. They have understood and absorbed the teachings of the sutra, so they can express them through the character they played. They showed the audience the meanings of the lyrics through their body and sign language.

All the characters made a deep impression on everyone, including the parents, and audience, and Tzu Chi volunteers. They were deeply touched. Everyone, the sutra adaptation is a Dharma service. It is not a performance, but a Dharma service that helps us grow in wisdom-life. It’s not an event that ends when the show is over. No.

Unlike a water hose that remains empty after flows through, rather, we want to use the water to nurture the inner-field of our heart and nourish the seed of kindness within. All this comes about due to karmic affinity. This time in Taitung, through the Project Hope for Disaster Risk Reduction, people are paying attention to (the safety of the schools and students.) In holding activities, local volunteers build up their confidence.

With this confidence and activities being held, (they reached out to their communities.)Finally, this time they have planted the bodhisattva seed very firmly (in their local community.) I hope the seed will take root and grow deep and wide. With that, the tree will become lush and green and take deep roots in Taiwan.

We should recruit more people to be volunteers, so that there will be more people (doing good) to accumulate good karmic affinity. So, volunteers can be vigilant and sincerely pious. They can truly purify people’s hearts. The pore hearts they purify, the more bodhisattva seeds will be planted, and there will be more trees.

“One gives rise to many; many come from one.” As long as a person has deep faith that is like a healthy tree, once matured, it can form a lush forest. It’s because this tree can produce numerous seeds every year as it flowers and produces fruits with more seeds. That is what the Sutra of Innumerable meanings means by the phrase: “One gives rise to many; many come from one.” If we are aspired (to be a bodhisattva), we can be like a seed that develops into a mature tree. (Thus,) we need to recruit more volunteers.

I hope everyone can identify with this and have faith. In Taitung, a path with the right direction has been shown to us, and it has been created for us. This path is smooth for everyone to walk on together. We must create this path in Taitung together, and then pave it to be smooth so that everyone may walk on it at ease.

All in all, I hope that since you’ve become active in the community, don’t stop. I hope, from now on, Tzu Chi volunteers in Taitung will remain diligent, and continue to recruit new volunteers. Do you understand? (Yes.) I am grateful to principals, teachers, as well as students. I am also grateful to our nursing and administrative staff from both Tzu Chi hospitals in Guanshan and Yuli for their participation.

It was not easy for them to find time to practice due to their busy schedules. With their determination, they were able to find time and go there to practice with others to make this a highly praised event. I am very grateful to everyone. I want to express gratitude to all the volunteers who came from Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Hualien to help with event. Many local volunteers also gave of themselves for this event. Indeed, I’m grateful to everyone for giving their power of love.
