20170827透徹疾苦同救拔 Reaching Out to Those in Need When Seeing Suffering

Looking around the world, we see many disasters. Life is filled with suffering. People’s afflictions are growing. (Sometimes,) the more things we know about, the more afflictions we have. Every day in my morning Dharma talk, I tell everyone, “We need to reduce our afflictions and get rid of them.” Get rid of them However, it seems that one can never reduce afflictions, let alone get rid of them completely.

The “worries” that people have are different from the “afflictions” in Buddhism. Affliction and worry are two different things. In Taiwanese, when a person says, “I am worried”, it means he is concerned about something. Yet, many people usually say, “I have many afflictions.”In fact, what they meant is they have many things to worry about.

The afflictions that Buddhism refers to are come from our mind. Afflictions are like entangled hemp yarn. If it is not twined well, they will get entangled. When it becomes a ball of messy yarn, it is hard to sort them out. That is why in Buddhism we stress(the importance of) getting rid of afflictions completely.

In order to do that, we must have faith. Having faith is the only way to get rid of entangled yarn-like afflictions. We must have deep faith and have no doubts the Dharma that we have learned. When the path has been paved and is in the right direction, we must stride forward steadily on this path.

Keep on walking, no matter how far the destination may be. When something is right, we should continue doing it. This will bring us peace and ease, because we are doing the right things which are beneficial to the world. Things that are beneficial to the word are the right things, and we should do them. The things that can solve social problems are what we should do, and everyone should do them. We need to promote doing the right things.

We all live on the same Earth under one sky. When the earth is harmed and disasters occur, we cannot say that it has nothing to do with us. Everything is related. (Seeing all these disasters, we need to awaken now and take action. People in Earth should develop mutual understanding and act together (to solve problems.) I

I often use events in the world to explain the Dharma to people. We are on the right direction in helping those in need. Some people might say, “What does that disaster have to do with me? It is so far away.” We have to know that the Earth is round and (what goes around comes around). We wouldn’t know what will happen to us. Disasters can happen near us or right in front of our eyes.

From this moment on, we should start cultivating our mind. Everyone should cultivate a mind of kindness, head in the right direction, and have the same goal to walk on the same path with one heart. Aiming for this right direction, we stride forward steadily. Nowadays, we see many sufferings in the world. People who are born into difficult circumstances in poor countries are truly helpless, but they still have to live there and survive the hardship.

Yet, some people say, “There are more people with over-nutrition than people dying from hunger.” Actually, I don’t believe that. Those who say that have never seen real suffering. They are not mindful enough to see through life’s sufferings. They would say, ‘On average, there are more people with obesity and related illnesses than people in hunger.”

I know there are many people with over-nutrition and (overeating issues.) There are many people like this, and it is not healthy. Yet, those in suffering are in circumstances beyond their control. They were born into suffering. If people with over-nutrition can consume less, they can help many people, while keeping their body and mind healthy.

Before knowing Tzu Chi, I complained a lot. But, now I think giving of myself is the greatest blessing. The small money we donate can do a lot of good. It’s like I give some of my love to everyone. The good things that we do, even though they are small, I still see them as Great Love. So, I will continue doing these small good deeds.

We hope there can be more kindhearted people who can change their mindset and turn their attention toward those in suffering. We should all put ourselves in the shoes of those in need. If we were in their situations, could you bear it? We should empathize with those in difficult situations and give of ourselves. That will do us and others good.

I’ll donate money to those in difficulty. How would you donate?

I’ll put 10 sen 02 20 sen(into my coin bank) every day. I save these coins in hope of helping those who need them more than I do, like orphans and disabled people.

Although we’re struggling right now and are receiving help, we still want to give back a little. We learned this from Tzu Chi volunteers.
Madam, the money you donate now will go to Tzu Chi Foundation. They use this money to help those in need. I also want to help, because I come from a poor family. I just told my customer and encouraged her to give a little love. This can help many people.
