20170823愛心救援運四智Relieving Suffering with Love and Wisdom

"We're waiting for the approval to bury the many bodies of the deceased. It's urgent as they've begun decomposing. " It is heartrending to see the flooding aftermath in Sierra Leone. Many people are dead or missing, and even more, nearly 4,000, have been rendered homeless. So, it is urgent for us to offer aid there. Local charity organizations, such as Caritas Freetown Foundation and Healey International Relief Foundation (HIRF), have been working with us to care for the needy.

This time, collaborative efforts have also been made to offer timely supply aid to those affected there. Continued supplies provision is also considered. In mid-August, we began offering ho food, but it is vital to continue to send food there. Yesterday, I discussed the relief plan with our CEO and Deputy CEO of Tzu Chi USA, who have come back to the Abode to brief me on their relief work in various countries.

Relief work in Sierra Leone is one of the major issues of discussion. After assessment, we found that we need to offer food to some 4,000 people for 14 days (before we map out a long-term plan). So, yesterday we decided that the first batch of rice of Taiwan should be given out to the most in need as soon as possible.

And we need to work with the local charities to call on more volunteers to help cook the rice. Also, we need to purchase cooking utensils as soon as we can so that those affected can also cook the rice on their own. Such are our ways to offer timely aid there. We also need to prepare tableware for them as soon as possible to ensure good hygiene and prevent diseases that may spread if they dine with their bare hands.

Seeing that they only have a meal a day, I truly feel for them. See how people's live differ greatly. Sometimes, our children are reluctant to dine, and the adults have to coax them into getting a bite. this is not the case in Sierra Leone, as many of the children are orphans.

Yesterday, Ci Hui, our volunteer from the U.S., showed me a picture of an orphan. Due to natural disasters, the child is deprived of family support and warmth. Thinking of the child, can we not feel heartache? We really cannot bear to see the child suffer. So, we have to speed up to deliver supplies by air to those most in need.

We should also take timely action to purchase supplies in Sierra Leone, so we can save on shipping costs and use the saved budget to deliver more supplies there by sea. This is how we can continue to offer supplies there.

In my Dharma talk at dawn, I mentioned that we need to attain the four wisdoms of the Buddha to have a great, perfect, and clear mind, as well as a mind of equality so we can discern things clearly and accomplish everything. We really need to live out the spirit of Bodhisattvas to relieve people's suffering.

Yet, the efforts of only a few are not enough. Our volunteers in Taiwan, for now, are unable to provide aid personally in Sierra Leone. Our volunteers in the U.S. have inspired many people of different religions and backgrounds to join Tzu Chi, and they will work together to bring aid to Sierra Leone. Yet, as to the supplies the locals need, we need to call on more countries and more people to help. We can only relieve the suffering of those affected when we work with one heart regardless of nationality, ethnicity, religion, etc.

Suffering in life is a result of our negative collective karma. We also see Vietnam. It has suffered from drought since last year. To help them get through the drought, our volunteers brought water tanks to them. "The dry season in Vietnam lasts half a year. So, people have to collect enough rainwater before the rainy season ends. "

"Due to the drought that began last year and seawater intrusion, we have no clean water to use. Tzu Chi came and helped us last year, and this year, they brought us water tanks. The villagers are all very happy. "

"I hope local officials can teach residents how to make good use of the water tanks. I also hope that they can cherish the water tanks, so w have safe and clean water to use. "

Every water tank comes with a filter that can block impurities and retain clean water. See how wise and mindful our volunteers are. They also tirelessly deliver the water tanks to those in need, from one stop to another, and even transport them by boat offshore. Seeing the water tanks, local recipients cherish them greatly.

"It's very convenient. The water in the vat can be used and the water in the tank is for drinking. " One of the recipients placed the water tank in front of the home altar, seeing it as a treasure that can save lives. See how water is cherished where there is a drought. Water is the origin of life, but many of us do no cherish it. We should count our blessings, live with vigilant care and sincere piety, and do what we can to bring aid to those in need in the world.

Seeing our volunteers in Vietnam give their all to help those in need, I'm truly very grateful and touched. The power of love is great. And there are many touching stories like this. Step by step, our volunteers pave a path with love and overcome all difficulties that lie ahead. I'm truly touched and deeply grateful.
