20170816恆時行善濟有情Cherishing Our Resources and Benefiting All Living Beings

How blessed we are to be safe and well. Yet, life is impermanent, and things may come upon us unexpectedly, bringing us inconvenience. Around 4:50 yesterday afternoon, Taiwan Time, a massive blackout hit Taiwan. When the electricity supply remains normal, we enjoy a life of peace and ease. However, once the electricity supply fails, everything will be mired in chaos.

Once we are accustomed to some convenience, if one day it unexpectedly becomes unavailable, we'll soon find our lives unbearable. We really need to awaken to life's impermanence. Unexpected things may come about at any time. This is what the Buddha reminded us of. So, we must cherish the resources available.

I often call on you all to conserve energy. However insignificant our efforts to conserve energy may seem, we should turn off any electric appliances that are not in use. By doing so, we are doing our part in energy conservation with a heart of sincere piety.

Who knows how much energy we can actually save through our actions, but by doing what we can, we're showing sincere piety in our actions for the common good. We need to live out true principles in our actions. If we know the true principles, we can gain insight into everything in the world. If we harbor a pure mind, we'll draw our hearts close to everything in the world, and naturally we'll cherish everything around us, including the water and power resources.

Apart from cherishing everything in the world, we also need to do good to benefit all living beings in the world. The Buddha has great loving-kindness and compassion, and is never tired of guiding all living beings to the shore of enlightenment. Such is what the Lotus Sutra teaches us---We should walk the Bodhisattva Path, cultivate great loving-kindness and compassion, and always remember to do good.

Our every single thought should rest on how to benefit all living beings. Our selfish pursuits may cause troubles to others, and if we indulge in enjoyment, our negative karma will accumulate an lead to disasters, bringing suffering to all mankind. We should not think of ourselves only. Rather, we should always remember to do good to benefit all living beings. Such is what is expounded in the Chapter on Parables of the Lotus Sutra.

Every chapter of the Lotus Sutra is about how to walk the Bodhisattva Path and bring peace to the world.

We see that in Kaohsiung, Taiwan, a house caught fire at night. The next morning our volunteers visited the borough head to better plan how to bring aid to the affected family.

"Tzu Chi volunteers visited me early this morning, and I'm really impressed with your timely response to emergencies. Wherever there are people in need, you always come forth to help. Thank you so much for your help. Without you, the affected family wouldn't have been able to clean up their home so quickly. But now, the house is all cleaned up. And you did this without expecting anything in return. Thank you very much. "

Whoever is suffering at any place and anytime in the world, our volunteers always go to their aid with great compassion in the hope of relieving their suffering. The borough head was much impressed that our volunteers mobilized so quickly. In times of disasters, the timely aid of Tzu Chi volunteers can always bring peace to people.

We often see our volunteers mobilize quickly to offer aid across Taiwan whenever necessary. This is how efficiently Tzu Chi volunteers across Taiwan respond to disasters. Dressed in Tzu Chi uniforms, they work in great unity to help those in need. This is truly touching to see.

We also see that heavy rainfall brought flashfloods to Malacca, Malaysia. Many homes are flooded, and our volunteers there also offer timely aid.

"Thank you, Tzu Chi volunteers. You've come to help us no matter what. " "It's the first time that so many people have come to visit me. I'm so happy to see so many of you coming to help us. "

After learning who needed help to clean up their home, our volunteers brought care and aid to them. Many people couldn't make meals, so our volunteers immediately prepared hot meals for them so that they would have energy to clean up their homes. See how thoughtful our volunteers are. This is the way of Tzu Chi volunteers, be it those in Taiwan or in Malaysia.

They paid home visits to the needy door to door, and we see all of our volunteers act alike no matter in which part of the world they are. The are polite, thoughtful, and sincerely loving, which are all manifested in their actions. Also, no matter if it's early morning or midnight, or if they have to work from dawn till night, or even through all the night, our volunteers always give sincerely with love. This is very touching.

Disasters are more common in the world now. In addition to Malaysia, flood disasters have also hit Nepal, India, Bangladesh, etc. Also, wildfires are raging in several countries and have not yet been extinguished. We see incidents of wildfires happening one after another. Relentless are the floods and wildfires that bring suffering to people.

In all, we really must live with vigilant care, truly repent our wrong way, and harbor humility and humbleness. We should not do whatever we want without considering its consequence. Rather, we should be humble, keep our desires in check, repent our wrongdoings, and live with vigilant care and sincere piety.
