20170729合和防災.長情呵護Preparing for Typhoon and Providing Lasting Care

Hi, Mr. Chen. Typhoon Nesat is coming.
I know.
We’re here to remind you to take precautions against the typhoon.
Pay attention to your surroundings. If the wind and rain get too intense, just stay home.

We suggest the family to have their bedridden family member stay with a relative. It is safer that way. Should there be any flood, he can be safe.

I am grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers. Yesterday, they have started paying home visits to our care recipients to see if the families need any help. For those who are ill, have difficulties moving around, or those living in shabby houses that are unable withstand strong wind and rain, they would advise them to evacuate to a safer place.

I see that volunteers treat the care recipients like family and are very thoughtful.
Tzu Chi has set up disaster relief coordination centers around Taiwan. I am very grateful for this. While caring for others, we must also care for ourselves. Safety comes first. We must be vigilant. This is showing our respect for Mother Nature.

I am truly grateful and I also pray sincerely that, when the typhoon lands, everyone can be safe. I hope everyone stays at home and does not venture outside.

We must have the right mindset. If we know a typhoon is coming and it is dangerous to go out, then we must not do anything that may cause troubles for others. If each one of us can keep safe, then everyone will be safe.

Moreover, each one of us should take precautions against the typhoon. It is everyone’s responsibility to take care of our surroundings so that garbage won’t cause poor drainage.

Not only should we do this around our house, we should also do this around our community to ensure everyone’s safety. If there are elderly living alone in our neighborhood, we should extend our love to them.

Although Tzu Chi volunteers provide care to our care recipients, there are still many elderly living alone who need their community to provide love and care. This is important.

Look at the forest fire in Canada. It is big and has continued for days. Many residences are affected. Tzu Chi volunteers have devoted themselves to providing care. Their sincere care comforted the affectees who have lost their property and belongings.
They are still anxious about their future. However, after receiving volunteers’ love and sincere comfort, they opened up their heart.

I am also grateful for this. We also see a case of lasting compassion and Great love. It is truly moving. More than 20 years ago, a teenage boy, Genhong, became paralyzed after a car accident. Ms. Yan, our senior volunteer, persisted in helping him by visiting and encouraging him. She also brought young volunteers and other senior volunteers to visit him often.

Ms. Yan sought help for him very mindfully and invited the painter Mr. Hsieh Kun-shan to inspire him. I am very touched. As a result, Genhong pulled himself together and started learning to paint with his mouth.

I can see his skillful brush painting vividly, making paintings one after another that are full of life. It is truly praiseworthy.

He is now a member of an association and receives a stipend. Upon receiving his first stipend, he said to me, “Aunty Yan, I want to donate money.” I say to him, ”Thank you. Thank you. You are finally able to reciprocate.”

Look at this hands. Although his hands have lost much function, but Genhong persists in doing good. We have more good news. He now has another teacher to teach hom to paint. He is going to have an exhibit at Taipei’s Huashan Creative Park.

There will be a press conference on August 15. He has invited me to attend this special occasion. He said to me, “Aunty Yan, because you, Tzu Chi volunteers, and the medical team have continuously encouraged me, and have never giving up on me, now I finally carved out a niche of my own.”

Although he cannot walk, his heart is now broadened and opened. He has gained recognition from many This is the result of 20 years’ efforts.

I am so grateful. We truly praise his spirit. Everyone has a potential and can do good. When one finds a right direction in life, he will be able to excel in a particular area.

In my morning Dharma talk, I mentioned that there is an inner-field in everyone’s heart of which many seeds are buried. Some are wholesome, while others are unwholesome.

When one goes astray in life, like cracking open the earth, unwholesome seeds will give rise to bad deeds. Wholesome seeds will sprout out of our inner-field and give rise to Bodhi seeds. When we open our hearts and be understanding, we will realize that each one of us has countless helpers whom we have formed good affinities.

With the rise of a good thought, we can inspire countless people and help many to transform their lives.

Look at our volunteer bodhisattvas. For all these years, they are not afraid of hard work and difficulties, they volunteer day after day. Every day, they encounter people in suffering. However, they never give up.

They never think this is a boring task. Instead, every day, they are very active in paying home visits as well as visiting patients in wards, while remembering which patients would need further assistance after they are discharged.

If they need help, they’ll try to find resources such as Mr. Hsieh Kun-shan. Our volunteers invited Mr. Hsieh to share his own story to encourage others; he was able to help many people like him to transform their lives.

From this perspective, everyone’s heart is like a field with countless seeds buried. Some are wholesome, while others are not.

With more wholesome seeds, there will be less unwholesome seeds. This means will have more wisdom and fewer afflictions. When we serve, we learn. When we learn, we awaken. You must put the Dharma that you heart each morning into practice in your volunteer work. We need to seize such opportunities to do so.
