20170807茹素節約護乾坤Going Vegetarian and Conserving Resources to Protect the Environment

Today is August 7. On this date in 1959, Typhoon Ellen brought heavy rainfalls to Taiwan and caused great floods. At the time, central Taiwan sustained severe damages and many people were affected.

After the flooding, many lost their means of living, they were forced to move to other regions of Taiwan. In 2009, when we carried out relief work in southern Taiwan after Typhoon Morakot, we heard affectees said, “Why are we always the ones struck by disasters?”

They were flood victims in 1959. In 2009, they were flood victims again. This happened to quite a few people. Some experienced great floods two or three times.

So, we must learn from history and remember its lessons. It’s a chance for us to review our history, reflect on ourselves, stay vigilant, and have reverence for Mother Nature.

We must conserve energy and resources. Researchers also urge that we need to start to start saving the Earth now. The only solution to lessen the impact of climate extremes is to reduce our consumption and go vegetarian.

Eat more vegetables and less meat are scientists and researchers’ conclusions based on their data analysis. This is also something I’ve urged.

Although ‘ve been urging vegetarianism for decades, it hasn’t been effective. With this knowledge and scientific findings, people should curb their cravings for meat.

Eating vegetarian can improve people’s health, conserve the Earth’s resources, and reduce the large amount of carbon emissions. That’s how we can mitigate climate change and have favorable weather. Otherwise, this is truly worrisome.

In addition to climate change, there is an influenza outbreak in Hong Kong. While in Myanmar, the swine flu outbreak is very severe. I saw news that medical masks are out of stock in Myanmar.

So, volunteers in Malaysia have purchased the masks for people in Myanmar. Several days ago, Tzu Chi volunteers in Malaysia purchased over five thousand medical masks and sent them over to Myanmar.

Tzu Chi volunteer Shiehchin Lin, “ Some Myanmar workers in Malaysia were about to go back to Myanmar, so we asked them to carry the masks back with them. It was the second batch of N95 masks that we delivered from Malaysia. The first batch, purchased in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor, had been delivered earlier.”

Director of Emergency Medical Division of Myanmar Ministry of Health Profzaw Wai Soe, “when the swine flu outbreak took place, hospitals in Myanmar were not ready for it.

So the necessary N95 masks and other protective medical supplies were out of stock. I’m grateful to Master Cheng Yen for her care and kindness to Myanmar people. Tzu Chi has not only provided us with medical and other supplies, but also spiritual comfort.”

Principal of 4th Middle School in Yangon Daw Lei Win, “I’m thankful to Master Cheng Yen for her love and care for Myanmar people. Tzu Chi’s help in various ways enables children to go to school safely. I am really thankful.”

Besides masks, there is also a need for medical gloves. Also, face masks for the general public need to be more effective against influenza viruses. We need to purchase such items and send them over promptly.

A few days ago, I told Tzu Chi staff that we can send the medical supplies by air. Since the supplies purchased and sent by volunteers in Malaysia are not enough to meet the need in Myanmar, we can help by providing more supplies to them, as it is estimated that it’ll take at least a month to contain the outbreak.

This reminds me of the SARS outbreak several years ago. The outbreak lasted a long time. At that time, we provided medical masks. When the medical masks we asked volunteers in the US and Canada to purchases them and ship them to Taiwan.

At the time, we even set up a production line in the old Tzu Chi office in Kaohsiung. Tens of sewing machines were set up to manufacture medical impermeable gowns.

These medical impermeable gowns were provided to many large hospitals. So, recalling the outbreak, we also promoted vegetarianism at the time, urging people to eat vegetarian as much as they can.

Being a vegetarian can create a more balanced lifestyle, and it is a fundamental way to protect the Earth. This is doable. Right now, our Earth can no longer regenerate resources to meet the needs of humans’ excessive consumption.

Even just maintaining the basic needs of the world’s population is straining enough. So, if we start conserving resources now, will the Earth be able to regenerate resources enough for our needs?

It’s like a family ran out of its food and has to use food from other storage. They do this again and again. All in all, we need to be more vigilant and sincerely pious.

Tzu Chi volunteer Chen Man, “This is my charity coin bank. I want to inspire my whole family as the conservation of water, electricity, and rice has to start at the household level. This is our “home” coin bank. How about we turn off the fan today to save energy?”

Granddaughter Liao Sue Yu, “Grandma says when the sun is out, we don’t need to turn the light on  when using the bathroom.”

Tzu Chi volunteer Chen Man, “There are seven people in my family. We all take shower at a certain time. I turn on the water heater at 7 pm, and turn it off at 9 pm. Everybody finishes showering within the two-hour period.”

Ms. Chen Man, a volunteer in central Taiwan, conserves resources in her daily life. Everyone in her family has the same goal of conserving electricity and water.

Every day, she boils hot water and puts it in a thermos bottle so she can have hot water to drink throughout the day. That way, she doesn’t need to use a hot water dispenser.

With thermos bottle, she can still have lot water. That’s how she practices Dharma in her daily life. When I saw this, I praised her very much. She’s a very diligent volunteer in central Taiwan.

She has been keeping this practice for decades. That is her initial aspiration. She has been practicing like this, which is very touching. Her small acts of energy conservation are truly touching.

Volunteers, we have to learn the Dharma, remember it, take it to heart, and implement it in our daily life. We have to practice conserving resources, while eating vegetarian and less meat. That’s how we help the Earth.
