20170731悲智救災懷感恩 Carrying out Disaster Relief with Compassion and Wisdom

Typhoon Nesat made landfall at Su’ao. Then, it rapidly left Taiwan. We are really grateful for this. Yet, we see that some public infrastructures were damaged.

Despite that, most people were safe. After the typhoon, we really have to be grateful. Road crews started repairing damaged roads, and cleaning crews cleaned away debris.

The most important is the restoration of electricity, a necessity for each household. During the typhoon, it brought sporadic rain showers. Technicians need to risk their lives in the storm climbing high to repair the electricity. We have to be grateful to them.

To express our gratitude, we should cherish electricity. We need to cherish both water and electricity. We can’t do without water and electricity.

We have to know that each time there’s a power outage, many technicians are out on duty to connect wires and to repair the damage. This is very dangerous.

Not only do they work on flat land, they also have to climb cliffs and work in the mountains. We must be grateful for this. To keep the streets clean and prevent mosquitoes from growing, it all depends on the cleaning crew.

We need to be grateful for all of these. We need to be grateful to everyone in society. They typhoon situation this time was quite unusual.

Typhoon Nesat hit Taiwan two days ago followed by typhoon Haitang yesterday. Land and sea warnings for both typhoons were issued on the same day. That was quite unusual.

When I heard the name Haitang after the typhoon was formed, it occurred to me that the name sounded familiar. So, I asked the staff to quickly find out when was the last time a Haitang made landfall in Taiwan.

Oh, it was in 2005. That year, Typhoon Longwang also hit. It was truly powerful. Some copper roof tiles above the Sutra Lecture Hall of the Hualien Jing Si Hall blown off.

The basement was flooded. It was the same with our schools. As a result, we were really busy that year. Typhoons are truly scary. In the history of typhoons in Taiwan, there was a major typhoon, Herb, that hit Taiwan on today’s date, July 31, 1996.

We should know how big the disaster it bought to Taiwan. From north to south, the whole island was devastated. I started my trip around Taiwan that year on August 7.

As the typhoon affected the whole Taiwan including Keelung, I travelled from north to south. All of our exhibits have a photo of a landslide caused by Herb.

Not only the road, but the entire face of the mountain had also collapsed. After seeing Tzu Chi volunteers taking risks to help affectees, I now ask everyone to stay safe.

It’s very important to pay attention to one’s safety in relief missions. So, in reviewing Tzu Chi’s daily history, we learn important lessons from it like reading a textbook.

When carrying out Tzu Chi activity each day, we should recall what we did before: what we did that brought us joy. We should not repeat the mistakes we made that put us in danger.

This is called “Peaceful Practice.” We should avoid doing what is beyond our abilities. We must avoid them. We do our best within our abilities

For things that are beyond our abilities, we shouldn’t force ourselves to do it. We need to use our wisdom while creating blessings. Indeed, Tzu Chi volunteers should not only create blessing but also nurture wisdom.

Every day, we can learn from Tzu Chi’s history, which serves as a textbook for nourshing our wisdom-life. We should always review Tzu Chi’s history. This is how we learn Tzu Chi’s spirit and values.

Back to Typhoon Nesat, two days ago, before the typhoon made landfall, some areas in Pingtung had been flooded with roads submerged in water.

Gradually, houses in low-lying areas were also flooded. So, Tzu Chi volunteers immediately checked on fellow volunteers in the disaster areas.

We also set up disaster relief coordination centers around Taiwan to keep in touch with Tzu Chi Headquarters so we can stay informed with the latest situations.

We also need to look after fellow Tzu Chi volunteers. Hundreds of calls have been made over land line and cell phones to volunteers reminding them to take care of themselves and stay home because safety comes first.

Seeing so many Qing Xiu Shis with so much power of love and Tzu Chi staff so dedicated, I was truly grateful. In particular, the CEO of our charity mission remained in the headquarters to accompany the staff patiently. I was really touched.

Such is the power of love. So, I hope everyone can be mindful. Before the typhoon came, we already began visiting our care recipients around Taiwan.

We reminded them to take precautions, and provided them with food, so that they didn’t need to go out for food during the typhoon. Moreover, we kept reminding them to take necessary preventive measures.

This is how Tzu Chi volunteers cared for people before the typhoon. After the typhoon, we began collecting information about the damage caused by the typhoon, and tried to figure out what kind of assistance to provide.

We are very mindful either before or after the typhoon and in collecting related information. I am indeed grateful and touched to see our volunteers’ efforts.

Yet, I still want to remind all of you to be vigilant in doing everything. I’m grateful that after the typhoon left, reported that they were safe, which made me happy and relieved.

We also see our volunteers on a small boat delivering boxed meals door to door.

Village resident, “Hi! You need one?”

Tzu Chi volunteer, “Do you have a bucket? Can you get it? Do you have a rope? Be careful, how about taking one more? Another typhoon is coming. Take care!”

Our volunteers even said that one boxed meal was not enough so take another one. This shows their thoughtfulness. There’re so many things to be grateful for. People should always take care of one another.
