In the Buddha’s first Dharma talk, he said that life is full of suffering. This suffering continues on; it is quite unbearable. This is why I worry about many things, thus, U hope everyone will stay diligent yet remain cautious in your work and stay safe. I keep on telling everyone to stay safe, so that my mind can be at ease. I will feel assured that my disciples have the same direction. When they don’t deviate from the Dharma, I feel assured.

Despite that we don’t deviate from the Dharma, does everyone use the dharma to get rid of the afflictions from their minds? All living beings have the Buddha nature; everyone can become a Buddha. But when will we attain Buddhahood? Innumerable eons later, which means a very long time. Actually, the length of time depends on us. Because we are ordinary beings, we are fickle and have various degrees of ignorance.

If we get rid of our ignorance, we will attain Buddhahood faster. In this world, all of us create karma continuously. Each day, we do many things, and the karmic seeds we created continue to accumulate. This concept comes from the Sutra, and I had talked about it. The Dharma is like a tree that grows in ten directions.

As the tree grows, its branches extend in all directions. With its roots growing in the ground, the tree grows into the sky and its branches extend to all directions. “One gives rise to many; many come from one.” Where does this “one” come from? It comes from a seed. This seed starts from a tiny particle. The germination of the seed does not come from the big seed, but from something within, which is called karmic cause.

Right now, our goal is to filter out our ignorance so that the karmic seeds will become pure again, and show the Buddha nature. Such pureness is the Buddha nature, which is untainted wisdom. On the Bodhisattva Path, there are numerous trees and numerous big families. In this big Dharma family, the love that we give forms positive affinities with others.

When volunteers from other places in Taiwan or overseas come to visit, we need to welcome them into this big family and greet them warmly with gentleness. We must possess this kind of ability. I told everyone before that the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva was a Buddha named “He Who Understands the True Dharma”.

We must always invite people to lend their helping hands to help others. By doing that, we will have greater strength. This is our big family. Although you are very experienced, I kept saying: you must pass down your experience. Passing down the experience does not mean throwing away the responsibility. It means to train the younger volunteers, and pass down the Dharma to them; you should share it with people and pass it on.

Look at the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, who extends out helping hands. Since beginningless time, the Bodhisattva has been relieving people from suffering. Such is the spirit of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva. Because Avalokitesvara already attained Buddhahood, he has a heart of the Buddha. So, I often say, “To emulate the Buddha’s heart and take my mission as your own.” My mission is to have everyone walk the Bodhisattva Path.

Take the volunteer Mr. Liang for example; he serves as a culinary volunteer, a cleaning volunteer and so on. Is he experienced enough? Yes, he is. That’s right. He is passing on his experience and shows others how to do it. Most importantly, we must work in unity and harmony with love. “Unity in heart brings about long lasting Great Love.”

We must unite our hearts. Not only should volunteers in Kaohsiung be united with enlightened love, you have to extend your love to others from around the world. Is this love great? (Yes.)  This requires unity in heart to bring about long lasting Great Love. Harmony brings about peace, happiness, and auspiciousness.

When we interact with people, we should always be happy and harmonious. By being harmonious, our hearts can be peaceful, and our activities can be carried out smoothly. Therefore, we should be harmonious, and think about how to tone our voices and attitudes so that it is gentle. This is called “strength of gentleness”.

We should have mutual love for all. Mutual love creates harmony and boundless love. Caring for our fellow volunteers is an example of having mutual love. We should care for the elderly volunteers in our communities. Without their children by their side, as they all live far away from them, when we go out, we should visit them (and check to see how they are doing.)

We can care for people in our communities this way and find out how they are. Or, we could call them, too. This is our family, and we should love each other. Such love is harmonious and boundless. “Working together brings great power.” With everyone gathering their strength together, the power is great.

Look at Tzu Chi’s four missions and eight footprints, they are like a tree that extend its branches with leaves flourishing. It is able to grow in all directions, with deep roots underneath, (No matter how the branches grow, they grow in all directions.) Where does the tree come from? From the tiny particle within the seed. Each seed has a different gene, which is the tiny particle. Tree has their own genes; likewise, our karma has karmic causes. This is how karma is generated and continues.

Every time we speak and act, we create karma. The Karmic seeds we create are either pure or tainted. So, we should work in unity and harmony with love. “One gives rise to many; many come from one.” This is the essence of the Lotus Sutra. Do you understand? (Yes.) Good, if everyone understands, then, I am assured.
