Honorary director Mr. Sung-chen Wen, “This is wonderful. There is plenty of space. We are blessed to have such a spacious venue for Tzu Chi’s activities in Keelung. It’s great.”

The current Tzu Chi office in Keelung is located on the land donated by Mr. Wen Sung-chen. He was inspired by Tzu Chi commissioner Mr. Xu Yingli. She had already retired, and she always wanted to do more for Tzu chi.

She also aspired to become an Honorary Board Member through her own efforts. Therefore, after retirement, she got a cleaning job at a building. That was how Mr. Wen met her.

Knowing that she was a retired civil servant, he asked her why she kept working. In response, she told him about Tzu Chi. That’s how he learned about Tzu Chi.

Moreover, after the 921 Earthquake, he was inspired to join the disaster relief effort with Tzu Chi volunteers. He came to understand Tzu Chi volunteers’ compassion and sincerity He was deeply touched by their selfless love. He owned a piece of land in Keelung.

Sung-Chen Wen’s wife Huang Sisi Wen, “At that time, we thought that we were getting old what were we going to do with all that money from selling the land?

Our children were successful in their careers. Why not donate the land? We considered many organizations and finally decided on Tzu Chi. We had participated in Tzu Chi’s activities. They were good and contributed a lot to society. “

Sung-chen Wen’s son Ing-chin Wen, “All their life, my parents have taught us to give back to society. My father does a lot of charity work, and we support him fully.”

Sung-Chen Wen’s daughter Ing-hsieh Wen, “If we were to sell the land, it would make a lot of money. If we hadn’t donated the land, our family would have used the money.

It would be a great pity. We thought the land could be used in better ways. My father was right: by donating the land, it could benefit countless people.”

Mr. Wen’s children are all quite successful, and they support their father’s idea of donating the land to Tzu Chi. It’s quite rare to see a family that gets along so well. Because of the power of love, Mr. Wen was inspired to donate his land.

In Keelung, a very crowded place, it’s not easy to find a piece of land, especially a leveled one. Tzu Chi really needed to find a new site to serve as the office in Keelung.

The old office was located on Jijin 1st Road; it was provided by Mr. Zhou, who had a factory that was no longer in use.

Voice from Tzu Chi volunteer Zenyuan Zhou, “I was a little concerned about borrowing the factory from my older brother, because I was afraid that he wouldn’t agree.

When I asked him, he just said, “Sure, but you need to clean it up.” I shared this good news with other volunteers and everyone was very happy. In the morning, I got the key, opened the door, and cleaned it up.”

Mr. Zhou thought the factory could be utilized by Tzu Chi volunteers, so he renovated the place including the fence. After the renovation is done, the office served an important function.

Tzu Chi volunteer Shioyen Huang, “Soon after Mr. Zhou lent us his factory, Keelung experienced several floods caused by typhoons such as Zangsane and Nari.

During those years, many serious floods occurred. Each time, almost all Tzu Chi volunteers in Keelung were mobilized. A disaster coordination center was set up there.

As the floods caused water and power outages, we had to prepare boxed meals for the flood affectees for several days. We had to deliver more than 10,000 boxed meals at a time.

That was the previous Tzu Chi office. I have been there two or three times. It was on a hill, next to a main road with heavy traffic. Whenever a car drove down the road, it was driving very fast, and I was always very worried.

Mr. Wen said to me, “Master, I have some personal savings that I would like to donate to you. I know you can put it to great use.” I was wondering what he was referring to.

Then, he took out an envelope, inside the envelope was a title deed of his land. When I opened it, I saw it was a large piece of land, amounting to over four hectares. The land was vast, and it was in Keelung, also next to a main road.

I held it and said, “Wow, what is this large piece of land for? He said, “Master, if you accept it, you can it when needed. “That’s how we got the land. During my trip this time, before traveling south, I went to the Keelung office.

It was indeed very solemn. Mr. Wen was among the attendees and saw that his land had been put to great use. It provided a place for volunteers to meet.

For the flooding in June, Tzu Chi volunteers helped with the flood relief in Keelung, Shimen, and Jinshan. Therefore, heads of districts, boroughs, and neighborhoods all came to thank Tzu Chi volunteers for their help.

I told them that in addition to the volunteers in Keelung, in addition to the volunteers in Keelung, there were also many volunteers from Taipei joining the relief effort in Keelung. So, we were all really grateful. Mr. Wen was very moved. He was very touched because the land he donated to Tzu Chi has been put to great use.

Honorary director Mr. Sung-chen Wen, “I’m very glad to have the opportunity to join this big event today. I turned 93 this year. As a kid, I grew up in the rural area in Nanzhuang, Miaoli.

At the age of 15, with my belongings in a sack, I came to Taipei hoping to start my own business. Of course I didn’t have any capital, so I had to work hard for it.

In 1956, a friend told me about a piece of land for sale in Keelung. It was this place. I didn’t know much about construction, so when people kept trying to buy the land from me and kept increasing the price, my wife told me to wait.

She said, “We don’t need the money, just leave it. After the 921 Earthquake, I went to volunteer in Nantou. When I saw Tzu Chi volunteers, I thought to myself, one day when I am able to contribute, I will give of myself as much as I can.

After sixteen years, I now see this magnificent Jing Si Hall built here, on this land. I hope that Tzu Chi volunteers will work harder, have more Dharma joy, and be more united. Seeing the Jing Si Hall being built on this land, I’m satisfied.”

I cannot express all my gratitude enough. The power of love is very important. A compassionate thought can have great impact. Good people and good deeds can bring a lot of good to our world.
