20170723福慧雙修互增上Diligently Cultivating Wisdom and Blessings for Future Lives

I’m 84 year old this year. Every day I come to the recycling station after 6 AM to do recycling.

I’m 74 years old this year. You’re 77 years old. Oh, I’m 77. I enjoy it very much. The more I do, the happier I am, and the younger I feel. I’m very grateful that I’ve become healthier.

I’m 85. How long have you been doing recycling? A very long time. Maybe more than 20 years. I don’t know how it exactly.

I’m grateful for the Master for the recycling program. I enjoy it very much. Even though I’m old, I’ll keep on doing it.

I’ve been doing recycling for more than 10 years. I’m very happy. This recycling program that Master had started makes us all very happy. Seeing the recyclables every day makes me very happy, although I don’t know why.

I see the elderly volunteers are very happy in doing recycling. It is very touching. Take the example of Bagualiao where the volunteers make steamed buns from leftover flour in recyclable flour bags. Each month, they are able to make 500 to 600 steamed buns out of the leftover flour.

We go to the bread factory to collect flour bags and keep them clean. We take the recyclables, and the factor takes care of its own trash. When we handle the flour bags at the recycling station, we put on our raincoats, so that we are covered from head to toe, leaving our eyes uncovered. Or else, the flour will get all over us and literally turn us white.

The vendor will only purchase these bags when they are clean and without flour. They will not buy them otherwise. We want to protect our Earth, so we must reduce the amount of trash. I even shifted the flour. After that, it looks so beautiful and clean. So we made guard pancakes, flour dumplings, and steamed buns out of the flour for our volunteers to enjoy.

Think about this, we should not underestimate every tiny bit of resources. That was how Tzu Chi started its recycling effort and saved resources. To care for the Earth and reduce the amount of trash, we do recycling. Actually, doing recycling is good for both body and mind, and most importantly, we can accumulate merits. I often tell everyone that we give without asking anything in return. This is the concept of boundless merits.

Just like the flour left in the corners of flour bags. When we turn the bags inside out and let the flour out, we are able to collect a big bucketful from all the corners of the flour bags. It is the same with our recycling stations. No matter where the recycling volunteers live, the collect recyclables and take them to the recycling stations. We do our best to recycle.

One time, I visited the Tzu Chi office in Fengshan. When I arrived, I walked straight in. As I approached the recycling volunteers, I saw them all busy compressing recyclables into bags. My heat really went out to them. I saw, among the recyclables, leftover food from lunchboxes and even the dirty garbage from restrooms. There were all kinds of trash inside.

Seeing this, my heart truly went out to the volunteers. So, I said to them, “We should encourage the public to sort the trash before they take recyclable to recycling stations.” We are not doing recycling for money. No. We are doing this to cherish our Earth. We don’t want this land to be damage, nor the air polluted. When we breathe in bad air, it is harmful to our lungs and bad for our organs.

For these reasons, we should keep the recyclables clean. If people do not change their mindset, we should reinforce a stricter policy of teaching people the correct practices by turning down the recyclables mixed with trash. We made it very clean that we only accept recyclables.

I heard volunteers’ sharing of their learning the Dharma by listening and taking it to heart.

Once, I was invited to a bowing pilgrimage at Hualien. It was my first bowing pilgrimage. I went and heard Master talked about building a hospital. I thought of my mother who was bedridden. I was very sad. So, I donated NT$50,000, and brought home some tapes of master’s teachings. After I finished with them, I passed them on to other people to listen to.

After listening to master’s teachings, I donated four hospital beds. I often watch Da Ai TV, and I see so many disasters happening. Many disasters also happen where I live. I think that Master is like a big boulder, and we are the little stones that support her mission. I am grateful to Master.

Before, they only listened to the recording of my teachings, yet, they listened so intently and happily. They took the Dharma to heart, and gave of themselves so completely. This is because they have affinity with me, and are happy to just hear my voice. Even until now, they are still walking on the Tzu Chi path with me.

I also heard volunteers say that they will love the people I love, and do the things I want to do. That’s right. Although we are advancing in our years, we must continue on with Tzu Chi’s work in this life, and in our future lives. Is that right? (Yes.)

So we must make great vows. We must nurture good habits and bring our wisdom from this life to our future lives. In our next life, when I see people, I want to share the Dharma with them. I want to say to people, “Let’s all do good deeds.” I hope this is what I will be like.

In the next life, when I see every one of you, I will invite all of you and say, “Come, we’ve met in our previous life. In this life, let’s continue to do good together.” Therefore, we should get rid of all our bad habits in this life, and keep learning the good ones.

In this big Tzu Chi family, being able to work in unity is a blessing. We should cherish our blessings and our affinities, and further form good affinities with each other. That he Buddha teaches us that before attaining Buddhahood, we must form good affinities with others. In this big family, so many blessings have gathered here. Thanks to the blessings others have created, we all have great blessings.

Therefore, everyone should help one another cultivate both wisdom and blessings. I hope that as I will be at the Jing Si Abode giving my teachings, every one of you will listen to them attentively. Only when you take my teachings to heart can we be able to form deep affinities in this life, so that in the next life, we can still be together and remain a big family. Can we do this? Yes.

Good. I am very grateful to you, and wish you all the best. The next time I come here will be for the year-end Blessing Ceremony. Please take good care of yourselves and stay healthy, so you can receive my blessings. Is that Okay? Yes. All right. I hope that everyone will diligently cultivate both wisdom and blessings. Thank you.
