20170717無私大愛入人群 Serving People with Selfless Great Love

Time flies. I am now back in the Morning Volunteer Assembly. It’s been almost a month since the last time I sat here. Within this past month, I did not waste my time at the different places that I visited.

During this trip, my first stop was Yilan. I was moved to see volunteers there as they have been following my teachings and serving the communities. I saw a volunteer who suffers from ankylosing spondylitis.

Volunteer Jinbiao Lin, “My life actually started when I was twenty. Prior to turning twenty, I got assigned to two years o military service, but I was diagnosed with ankylosing spondylitis. So, I did not serve in the military.

I am 162 cm tall, and now I’m like this. I’ve lived with this for more than 40 years. I’ve put the pain behind me. I now volunteer at the recycling station, which has become the focus of my life.

Before this, I had a hard time accepting my condition. I saw no purpose in life, so I just drank and smoked. But ever since Tzu Chi’s brothers and sisters brought me to the recycling station, doing recycling has become the purpose of my life.

So now, other than going to doctors’ appointments, I just go to the recycling station every morning. It has become my home, and the Tzu Chi brothers and sisters are my family.

Now, for everyday that I live, it is an extra day gifted to me. So, I thank the Tzu Chi brothers and sisters and all the volunteers at the recycling station for their love and support.”

He was still young when he fell ill. It made him become low self-esteemed with no control over his body. Then, Tzu Chi volunteers learned of his case. For decades, his life had been hard, and he thought he was forgotten by everyone.

Yet, after his case was reported to the volunteers, they tried everything they could to find him. Then, they mindfully supported and guided him, introduced him to recycling work, so that he could make use of his life and regain his self-esteem.

Gradually, the volunteering work helped him eliminate his afflictions until he was able to come out of his shell. Being freed of his afflictions, he was able to live his life to the fullest.

Of course, it took volunteers years to accomplish this; it also took them patience, kindness, and love to find him. With their long-term support, he has found stability and joy in recycling.

There was also a volunteer with Parkinson’s disease. Recycling work also led him to fully realize the true value of his life to fully realize the true value of his life. To be able to work for the well-being of our earth help him fond dignity in life.

There are many like him who found dignity in life this way. And of course, there are many touching stories in Yilan. And then, I headed to Taipei, and I heard more sharings there.

For several days, I kept hearing how advanced in age our elderly volunteers are getting. I told them that we can grow in age, but not give in to old age.

We saw a commissioner whose Tzu Chi badge number is 16. She is already 90 years old. She has been a Tzu Chi commissioner for nearly 50 years. She’s indeed a treasure of Tzu Chi.

I also went to Changhua and saw our 100-year-old commissioner, Cai Kuan. At her age, she is a role model for me. She can do everything a commissioner does.

She also serves in each functional group. She’s never discouraged by old age. Besides doing recycling, she exercises every day. At her age, she can even bend forward with her hands grabbing her angles.

She can also stand on one foot, with the other leg stretching on the jungle gym. At her age, her flexibility is very impressive. We should look up to her. This is what I had been doing on my trip for the past 30 days.

Every day, I spent more than 10 hours listening to volunteers’ sharings, and I paid full attention to what they said. Even though each area has its own functional groups, I listened to all of their sharings at each location. I was very happy and deeply touched by their sharings.

Seeing elderly volunteers made me think a lot. I feel very touched and have mixed feelings as well. With the law of nature, we have to go through birth, aging, illness, and death.

It is inevitable to hear of volunteers’ aging, and it makes my heart ache, as they are my disciples. Over the decades, volunteers have grown old, we see declining health, aging, and illness.

This fills my heart with emotions and grief. But it is inevitable, as it is the law of nature. All in all, there is so much to tell you. In Tzu Chi’s four missions, including medicine, education, culture, and charity, there are so many inspiring stories that make me feel grateful.

In the Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, I was reassured by the medical staff as they have saved many patients’ lives. It’s the same with the Taichung Tzu Chi Hospital, as the medical staff works and gets along well.

In the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, I was deeply moved as every department of the hospital gave presentations for two whole days. On both days, from early morning on, I listened to presentations about their work in the hospital, ranging from advanced medical technology to general affairs, including the management of tens of thousands of items.

There were many touching stories of people and events. Tzu Chi’s four missions have a common goal. I hope we can serve people with selfless Great Love and a heart of gratitude.

In doing this, we will be very happy and bring peace and harmony to families and communities, and purify people’s hearts.
