20170714採納優點勤修行 Respecting Other`s Views and Diligently Cultivating Ourselves

Volunteers in Kaohsiung made me feel assured because you have set up many good examples, especially in taking on responsibilities. Volunteers have the courage to take on the positions of team leaders.

I heard volunteers sincerely said, “I seem to not do anything right.” Actually, that’s not the case. It’s because people have their own views. We live in a world of five turbidities; one of the turbidities is “View Turbidity”, which gives rise to incorrect views and afflictions. This is what ordinary people have.

Because we are all ordinary people, we should emulate Bodhisattvas. To emulate Bodhisattvas is to learn to become a Bodhisattva. Bodhisattvas serve people in society, so we should all be grateful that we can reach out to help those in suffering. We go to people’s aid without being asked. Do you know where this teaching comes from? It comes from the Sutra of Innumerable Meanings. Bodhisattvas come alive from the sutra and have compassion for all living beings.

When the Bodhisattva shows his compassion, he reaches out to people in need. When he lends on hand to help others, his one thousand hands offer help. Where can we find those on thousand hands? Among people?  It’s the Bodhisattva of compassion.

When the Bodhisattva of Compassion moves one hand, one thousand hands move together. The spirit of the Bodhisattva of Compassion can be found among people. Everyone has the Buddha nature and is willing to give of themselves. So we must be grateful for their dedication and gather everyone’s strength together.

One person has only two hands. No matter what he does, he has only two hands. But, when we need to rely on other people’s hands, we’ll have many hands to help people in need. So, we should always be grateful and appreciative toward many people.

We are ordinary people living an ordinary life. But, in times of need, we would manifest our Buddha nature and work together. We live in a world of five turbidities. We carry out the Buddha’s teachings to benefit all living beings and promote the Bodhisattva Path. We do what is right.

To inspire people to learn Buddhism, in Tzu Chi, we use the method of charity work. We choose to walk the Bodhisattva Path and we need to live up to be a person of good character. To uphold the Bodhisattva precepts, we need to take on any work that is beneficial to living beings. To take on the responsibility without wisdom, how do you do this? To have wisdom, we should make sure that we have good character.

I have often told everyone to learn Tzu Chi’s history and spirit. Tzu Chi has done a lot both in Taiwan and overseas. However, as ordinary beings, people tend to want their opinions to be taken. There will be as many opinions as many people. With so many different opinions, we should choose what is right and work together happily. We should have a broad heart to listen to others’ opinions and record down what all the comments and opinions that people say.

Everyone has his strength. We should use people’s good suggestions. For the good suggestions that we did not use this time, we keep them for future use. We should accept everyone’s suggestions, as everyone has the Buddha’s nature and wisdom; therefore, everyone has his strength. It’s ok that other people have strength, we need to learn to be broad-hearted to see the good points of other people. We should not reject others’ suggestions.

Everyone offers good points, and we can all write them down and use them on appropriate occasions. We can combine a few people’s suggestion to use this time and keep others for another occasion on another day. This is what we can do. All in all, we can use good suggestions from others every day. This is all about our mindset. Giving of ourselves is meaningful.

In walking the Bodhisattva Path, we’re busy working towards this direction, which is the Tzu Chi Path. Our religious faith comes from the Buddha’s teachings. Religion teaches us about life’s direction and purpose. We have such purpose and teachings.

This purpose is not to seek our own happiness, but to alleviate all living beings from suffering. This is the purpose of a bodhisattva who vows to alleviate living beings from suffering and not seek one’s own happiness. This is called a bodhisattva. So, we help others not for our own happiness. We just do our best.

Actually, this is how we contribute. Because you’ve enjoyed wealth, you know how to use wealth to do good deeds. How much you enjoy depends on how much you have given. Some might say, “I am a manual laborer. I don’t have wealth to enjoy, yet I still give of myself what I can.” Yes, but this sort of enjoyment is even greater than the wealthy kind because it’s not easy. People can see how hard it is to give in this way.

Of course, we should do our best as we can. It’s the best that they can do, so that’s what they did. Doing their utmost already created boundless merits. We do our best; others do their best to serve the public. That’s an accomplishment I believe that everyone has a broad heart and blessings. I’m truly grateful.

The precepts and demeanors of bodhisattvas defines our disciplines and codes of conducts, which is about taking on responsibilities, and pass on the Tzu Chi spirit and values from generation to generation. This means that we continue to support the new team leaders.

Take Mr. Du for example, he attends every team meeting to give his support and offer suggestions. For things that are right, he gives his support, listens to everyone’s ideas and shares his experiences with everyone. He does this many times because he wants to really pass on Tzu Chi’s spirit and values to benefit and deliver all living beings.

In summary, giving support is a long-term commitment, and passing on the Tzu Chi spirit and values is a never-ending process. Our Tzu Chi Path needs us to take on responsibilities, pass on our experiences to next generation and give support. This is the precepts and demeanors of bodhisattvas. Mr. Du’s spirit is what truly touches me, and I’m grateful to him.

We should interact with one another in harmony, love one another, and unite as one. Everyone needs to be active in Tzu Chi activities. Only by actively contributing can we actually gain. If we just sit there and only want to be a happy Tzu Chi volunteer, we won’t about Tzu Chi’s work.

Nowadays, people talk about the importance of exercise for our health. When we volunteer, we are being active. So, we should volunteer regularly and be active. Do you understand? “Yes.” Good, so you have taken in my words? “Yes.” Good, I thank you all.
