20170709職志合一勤守護 Safeguarding Tzu Chi Hospital with a Sense of Mission

Let me share with everyone the story of our medical care in Dapu. In September 2003, the Bureau of national Health Insurance launched a project of medical care in rural areas. So, I took up this project in 2003. We have Chinese and Western doctors as well as a physical therapist serving on site.

We have only very simple equipment. From the view of an accreditation review, we are under-equipped. However, that’s how it is for remote areas. The rehabilitation area is out there. Further down is cashier and dispensary. All medicine are packed on site.

We don’t have complex nor high tech equipment. However, we serve with our heart. We have very mindful all these years. We got there once a month. In 14 years, we have provided an estimation of about 40,000 consultations. The total distance accumulated from the trips back and forth is about 80,000km.

Dapu Township has established a new Chinese Medicine Clinic, so our service will end on December 31. It’s hard to say goodbye to the medical station as I have served for 14 years. However, I deeply agree with this saying, “Make haste in doing good.” We should seize time and give of ourselves.

I am very grateful and touched. Travelling 80,000km and serving for 14 years are not easy to do. From his sharing, we also heard that besides travelling long distance, he encountered rock falls on the mountain road. It is quite dangerous.

However, our doctors have a warm hearts of lasting compassion and Great Love. I hope such lasting compassion and Great Love covers vast land, mountains and seas. I hope that we use our genuine and sincere Great Love in serving patients. This is what we aim for in our medical mission. It is also our direction.

Our hearts are all in the same direction with a sense of mission and love. No one fusses over personal gains. Life is precious and priceless; it’s the same with our hearts. After all, is medical care for profit? Is medical care about following a trend? Neither. What we care about the most is the quality of medical care. Illnesses bring about the most suffering.

When people get old or get sick, they suffer tremendously. Those in this room are still young and don’t know the suffering of old age. Old age truly brings a lot of suffering. Illness brings even more suffering. Those who haven’t experienced aging and sickness don’t know what such suffering is like. Who do they turn to? Only doctors, nurses and a correct diagnosis can alleviate their suffering.

I am very grateful to our doctors and nurses. For every department in our hospital, I’d like to bow and express my heartfelt gratitude. I am truly touched. Our medical mission is supported by doctors, nurses, and staff of every department in our hospitals. It takes the joined efforts of everyone (to provide a well-rounded medical care.) Although you say the work is not tiring, (I know it is.)

Patients can get ill at any time, (so we adjust to patients’ needs.) Sometimes, patients really need support, both physically and mentally. Besides treating the body, they also need emotional support. Everyone knows that one day they will pass away. While some patients have a hard time accepting it, others accept it with grace and ease.

Those who can embrace this day enjoy better quality of life. They accept their death. So their minds are filled with ease and peace. This requires medical personnel to give them guidance and support and comfort them for them to embrace that day.

This is the ultimate medical care which helps patients get rid of the impurities in their minds and the filth of their bodies. So, in providing medical care, besides taking care of them physically, we also take care of them mentally.

I see that this year’s accreditation review has required everyone to work harder. I understand very well that an accreditation review is highly stressful for any hospital. However, people around us are helping and praying for us. I see that staff from every department participated in the cleanup of the hospital like a family doing spring cleaning. It truly feels like home.

When a big family is united, its relatives will join. I am grateful to everyone’s devotion and your dedicated efforts. Tzu Chi is supported by everyone’s contribution and power of love.

We also hear the story of a nurse. Her mother actually doesn’t need to work as a cleaning lady for the hospital anymore. But, as a disciple of mine, she decides to support me through her job. Although I live in Hualien, (she supports the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital) by keeping it clean. She is a certified Tzu Chi commissioner, and she uses her job to fulfill her aspiration.

With her job, she carries out the mission of Tzu Chi. Her work is truly her mission, and she safeguards the big family of Tzu Chi. This is truly special.

This is what makes our hospital different from others. She is so far away from me yet her hear is so close to mine. This takes time. Truly, there are many people who devote their time and themselves whole-heartedly. The most remarkable thing is everyone’s dedication to the hospital at all time. I am truly touched and grateful.

Our hospital is in the midst of farmland. (We hope our hospital can be like a forest.) We must make vows to do this. Why do I say forest? A forest has many big trees; they flower and bear fruits. The Sutra of Innumerable Meanings says, “One seed can give rise to innumerable seeds.” One tree can bloom and produce fruits with many seeds every year.

I hope our hospital can be like a forest full of big trees that produce countless fruits. I hope the Dalin Tzu Chi Hospital, (a hospital in the midst of farmland,) will advance and excel to the next level and make our hospital different from others by using our sincerity.
There are many good things about our hospital. This is because we have a sense of mission, which is in our spirit. With the same mission and spirit, this is how we can excel and exert our power of love.
