20170710垃圾減量淨大地 Protecting the Environment by Reducing Trash

Seeing you are healthy and dedicating yourselves to protecting the Earth with love. I will always keep you, the elderly volunteers of Yunlin and Jiayi counties in my mind. I often tell everyone, “The elderly are treasures of our society.”

When they were young, now they’re old. When they were young, they took good care of their family and raised their children to become contributing members of our society. They took good care of their family so everyone is healthy and well.

Despite getting old, they haven’t stopped working. They’re now caring for the Earth and caring for people in suffering in the world. This makes the elderly live a dignified and valuable life. Especially for today’s elderly, their dedication for the Earth and humanity is truly admirable.

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “Mr. Huang, how long have you been doing recycling?”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “26 years.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “26 years! Guess how old he is now?”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “I’m 86 years old.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “86 years old and this is his wife. How old are you?”

Dharma sister Gwaichi Liao, “I’m 84 years old.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “84 years old! Do you know they live in the mountains? They live in the mountains, and they spend much time collecting recyclables on foot. How did they get here? Not by foot!”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “We come by taxi.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “You took a taxi! They come by taxi to do recycling! They’ve done recycling for 20 years they took a taxi to the recycling station. How much does it cost a week? How much does it cost a month?”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “NT$1,600 a month.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang,” Four rides a week and NT$1,600 a month, they take a taxi to the recycling station to do recycling. Now, life is better; your youngest son is living with you and he takes you to the station, right?”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “Yes, he does.”

Dharma sister Lishu Chang, “Are you happy doing recycling?”

Dharma brother Laifa Huang, “Yes, we are.”

This elderly couple lives in the mountains in Meishan, Jiayi. They used to take a tzxi to the recycling station. Four trips a week cost NT$1,600 a month. Spending money on taxis shows their dedication to do recycling.

They’re done recycling for more than 20 years, which is truly admirable. This elderly couple has a good relationship, and they do recycling together. They are in good health, have filial children, and are free of worries.

Now their son takes them to the recycling station. Their children are filial and support what they want to do; life is good. I give them my sincere wishes. Seeing the trash problem in Douliu, which is a true dilemma, I become very concerned.

That big pile of landfill is made up of things that were very valuable when they were new, but they were thrown away and buried like trash before they became worn out. They will not decompose in the soil nore can they be used as fertilizer.

They will just stay underground for hundreds and thousands of years without every decomposing. How big is our island? It cannot take landfills one after another. If we were to spread the trash out and bury them underground, how much land could we use to bury all the trash?

We need food to sustain us. Don’t we need clean untainted soil to grow crops? We can’t afford to keep buying new things whenever we want and then throw them away whenever we like. So we really need to educate the public about the impact of consumerism on the environment.

Our recycling volunteers don’t just help reduce the amount of trash by recycling. Though they are old, they have a lot of wisdom; they know about recyclables. Just plastic bags alone can be sorted into many different categories.

They’re very mindful and patient in sorting them. Some volunteers are old, but they only need to pick up a bag, feel it and listen to the sound it makes to know which category it belongs to.

So, there’s a saying, one can become an expert in any field, and our recycling volunteers have such wisdom. Their wisdom is something that others don’t have, and they sort the plastic bags swiftly.

Trash has piled up in Douliu for quite a while now. How do we deal with this problem? We need to first reduce the amount of trash. Otherwise, we will get more trash than we can dispose of. The amount of trash will keep increasing because people are producing more trash now.

We should not only do recycling ourselves, but also encourage everyone to do the same; our children and grandchildren need to do it, our neighbors also need to understand recycling.

We need to promote the concept of recycling, so that every household and every person will sort their trash and do recycling. After the trash is sorted well, much of it can be recycled and reused.

We can also make them into other products. For example, the gray polo shirts, white pants, socks and sock covers that you’re wearing are all made from fabrics that came from sorted recycled plastics.

By sorting recycling and reusing recyclables, we can produce plenty of clothing items and keep the land unpolluted which can provide us with plenty of food. Through recycling, we won’t lack clothing to wear or food to eat. Not lacking necessities means we’re well-off.

So, we need to promote recycling now. This is closely connected to the wellbeing of our world. So, I hope everyone can be mindful in this. The trash problem concerns not only the mayor of Douliu but also everyone else.

With a lot of trash comes a lot of files and mosquitoes, which is another concern. We should keep the environment clean, so that there won’t be mosquitoes to spread infectious diseases.

All in all, I am grateful to the recycling volunteers living such a valuable life in their eighties or nineties. To be able to move around and volunteer create value in life. I give all of you my blessings.

Please take care of one another. These elderly volunteers are like our close family members. Tzu Cheng members and Tzu Chi commissioners, please cherish and take good care of them.
