20170610用愛鋪路不畏難Overcoming Difficulties to Pave a Path of Love

The forces of nature are truly mighty. We must be vigilant. Not only that, we must also be sincerely pious.

With humans’ collective karma, we ought to reflect on our actions now; just look at what happened in Taiwan last week. Our volunteers just finished a flood cleanup. Now, there is another warning about a cold front approaching which will sweep across Taiwan. We must be cautious and on guard.

It is not enough to combat natural disasters with human power. Evan if we mobilized and cleaned up after the flood, with the abnormal climate, we don’t know when the next disaster will be.

However, the most important thing we can do to prevent this is to purify people’s hearts. This requires changing our wrong ways. We must eliminate our ignorance, greed, and hatred in our hearts and minds and stop creating negative karma.

Life is full of impermanence. You see, after the flood, personal possessions are covered in mud and become wastes. It’s problematic to deal with these wastes. No matter how valuable they once were, they are all wastes now. Therefore, we should not indulge our desires. Understanding life’s truth takes us on the right path.

The Dharma is what we should seek in life. Everyone has a sense of self that can narrow our minds, which causes us to fuss over things all our life. Doing this brings afflictions, vexation, troubles, and sufferings onto ourselves.

We should use the Dharma and find methods to open our hearts and let go of our selfishness to embrace and become one with the world and feel the suffering of all living beings.

For the past few days, we have been seeing moving scenes. A person saw a Tzu Chi volunteer and asked to give a hug. Some others came up to volunteers to express their gratitude. Volunteers received many thanks in communities. I often said that we have paved a path with love. Every inch of the path is paved with love.

That is why when a group of Tzu Chi volunteers walk on the street, people recognize them. Their sincerity is not shown through words but action. It’s genuine because they give from the heart. The way they give of themselves displays goodness.

With such spirit, even being covered in mud after the cleanups, they still looked beautiful. Such beauty comes from their hearts, as that’s their true nature. When I see their pictures, I feel grateful from the bottom of my heart.

Recently in my Dharma talks on the Lotus Sutra, I talked about giving rewards according to one’s merits. Look at how much we give and the spiritual joy we’ve gained. Seeing people showing appreciations, isn’t it beautiful?

Such genuine interactions are truly moving. This is displaying truth, goodness, and beauty. Where do we find this? We can find this among living bodhisattvas. Such appreciation and praise give volunteers a big encouragement.

We see that in Malaysia, to purity people’s hearts volunteers are going door to door. Because I encouraged them to inspire a million donating members, they humbled themselves to do this.

Newvolunteers who are too shy to introduce Tzu Chi to others or inspire donating members are encouraged to come and join us. We see that they were very happy and learned a lot. They learned that inspiring love and seeking donation is not difficult, as long as they are determined.

Some residents turned us away, and some didn’t. We gave them brochures and explained to them how to do recycling.

When our volunteers rang the door bell and the door opened, the house owner saw a stranger and closed the door, we must learn to accept this. We need to bear with this kind of situation and continue on to the next house. This is what volunteers have to go through regardless of the difficulties. With their sincerity, they have inspired people. They persisted hoping that people would understand Great Love.

At the same time, they need to identify those who need help or those with love in their hearts who are willing to join us in doing good.

Donating one ringgit a month us just fine. Tzu Chi will pool everyone’s donation together and put the money into good use by helping those in need.

We see some people in suffering. They cannot solve their issues so we need to reach out to them. They don’t know how to get help.

At first, we wanted to inspire them to donate yet we came to find that many families needed our help. Like today, we met a man who was injured at work. His head was injured and body paralyzed. His wife doesn’t work, and they have three kids to raise. So, when we knocked on their door, they wouldn’t open, because they thought we were running a scam.

Some people did not open doors or windows, so there’s a wall between them. Volunteers need to deal with this kind of treatment. All in all, in times of disaster, we need to devote ourselves to relief effort.

At time of peace, we need to inspire people. In doing so, we need to bear with rejections. Going among people to inspire them is not easy.

We also see that there’s a Tzu Chi camp going on at the Jing Si Hall in Hualien. In a few days, there will be a camp held at the Abode. Tzu Chi volunteers from central Taiwan came to experience life at the Abode.

They attended camps held at the Abode before. They thought that when the camp was over, we sent the comforter covers to the cleaners. But in fact, it is the Dharma masters who took off the dirty comforter covers and washed them.

One of the Dharma master said, we can practice the Four Right Efforts through changing the comforters. She then explained the meaning of the Four Right Efforts.

In cleaning the comforter covers, one needs to pay attention to details, such as inside the corners of the covers as dusts and lint get collected there.

All in all, one must have a joyful heart in accepting whatever task. No matter how laborious it might be, they do it with joy. They are happy and at ease being busy at work every day. They do this every day.

Yet, they learn the Dharma every day. In doing so, they apply the Dharma in doing their daily tasks. This is how one truly cultivates oneself. I am very happy to see everyone gain insights from the Dharma.
