Right now, there is much unrest in Venezuela. The supermarkets are often looted. Due to inflation and increasing prices, people can no longer live under the shortage of material necessities. So, people would do anything, even looting stores.

But we have a volunteer in Venezuela; she has been doing business there for many years. With Tzu Chi’s spirit, no matter how price of goods goes up due to inflation, she neither hoards goods, nor raises the price of them. In keeping up with this principle, she has won the respect of the locals.

In Venezuela, she is always willing to provide assistance to people in need, such as the elderly, the disabled, and the sick in her community.

How does she get the aid to help people? Since she is sincere, she has the support of the locals. When she told people about doing recycling to fund charity work, many people began collecting recyclables.

The money accumulated bit by bit from recycling is used to help students in need, the poor, the disabled, and the sick. She is very upright and has received praises from many people. Evan the police took the initiative to accompany her in doing Tzu Chi activities.

In the past few years, she has been carrying out Tzu Chi’s work including recycling under difficult conditions. She never said, “This is from me.” Instead, she says, “The money comes from people’s donations in coin banks and from recycling, which many people helped.” She has a broad heart, and takes no credit for all the work.

Because of this, people love and respect her, which truly raises the quality of the relief work. Because the volunteers respect the aid recipients, not only do the recipients feel grateful, people in the community also what they do.

She has won people’s hearts and respect. We should truly admire what she has achieved. This is why many people in her community willingly join in the recycling work.

We also see a medical case from the Philippines. Seven years ago, this patient had a toothache, but she had no access to a dentist. So, a traditional healer extracted her tooth.

I sought help from a traditional healer, who took out my tooth using a spoon. The extracted tooth was tiny. And it was knocked off instead of being wholly extracted.

After that, the place continued to ache. Later, mote teeth came loose and fell off, and she lived on with the pain for seven years. Then, a dentist from the Philippines reported her case to Tzu Chi volunteers.

I cannot help her financially. But only thing I can help Sarah is to send her to Tzu Chi Foundation to have medical and surgical intervention.

Dr. Hsia evaluated her condition and diagnosed that she had a tumor in her jaw, which covered her entire lower jaw; the jaw bone can no longer be seen. The surgery was a complicated one: the tumor will need to be removed, then parts of her leg bone will be used to reconstruct her jaw. Using 3D printing technology, the doctor was able to restore her face.

A part of her leg bone was extracted, then the leg bone was reconstructed to match the shape of the 3D printed model. Then, the bone was refitted onto her face. After the reconstructive surgery, we hope her vessels will regenerate, so that her flap can survive and her bone will grow.

This relied on teamwork. Dr. Hsia also said that this operation cannot be done by one person alone; it requires cooperation from the whole team. The surgery was estimated to take 14 hours. Due to the team’s meticulous efforts, the surgery took 16 hours.

Think about it, sixteen hours, with patience, love, and meticulous efforts, the team spent on the surgery for 16 hours. We see that the patient now has her face restored.

I want to thank Tzu Chi and Master Cheng Yen for helping me.

She says she is doing well now. First, she wants to thank Master Cheng Yen. Now, she is not in pain anymore. She has vowed to become a vegetarian.

Her life has been reconstructed. It is truly the power of love from the medical team that has “recreated” her. Now, all she need is to come back for dental implants, so should could eat and chew like everyone else. This is very touching. The power of love is truly very touching. I sincerely praise them. I am very grateful for this.

The power of love came from so many people who gave with a sincere heart and made the surgery a success. We must be truly grateful to these doctors. They are truly praiseworthy. Recently I have been talking about the true spirit of being doctors and nurses, and also perfecting our character.

Yes, the true spirit or the mission of Tzu Chi volunteers is to serve the world. In this world of impurities, we need to share the teachings of the Buddha for people to walk on the right path, and purify people’s hearts so there will be harmony in society.

To purify people’s hearts, we need to quickly purify our heart. If our heart still has impurities, that means we still have flaws in our character. To cultivate ourselves is to perfect our character. This is what spiritual cultivation is about.

The chapter “Peaceful Practices” (In the Lotus Sutra) teaches us that, in a world of impurities how we can gain peace and joy of the mind while serving people in need.

To perfect our character, we need to cultivate ourselves through interacting with others and dealing with matters. Through dealing with complicated matters in this world filled with impurities, we train and perfect our character. We need to make great vows.

Recently, I have been talking about purifying our action, speech, and thoughts. There are the three rules of preaching. On top of this, we need to make great vows. All together, these are four rules. In practicing these rules, we must perfect our character first.

Then, we must help living beings. We help people in need, beside alleviating them from physical sufferings, we also help them correct their wayward conducts caused by their ignorance.

In addition, we help many people with psychological conditions which cannot be seen nor touched. Yet, these people are not well. So how can we keep our body and mind healthy? It is only when our bodies and minds are healthy, can our hearts be truly purified.

When people’s hearts are purified, we must then encourage them to walk the Bodhisattva Path. With the same mission, we work together to relieve people from suffering.
