20170623開道鋪路信願行 Taking Action to Create and Pave the Bodhisattva Path with Love

When we read the sutras, we often see passages about making offerings. Actually, making offerings to the Buddha, the Dharma and the Sangha is not about giving money or material things. That is not it. Generosity, making offerings, and giving of oneself are three different terms, but they mean the same thing. In today’s words, it means to give of ourselves.

Tzu Chi volunteers give of themselves unconditionally and then? They are grateful. In Buddhism, this is known as the empty nature of the three aspects of giving. If we were to analyze this concept, it is very profound. But, it’s actually quite easy to understand when applied to life. As long as we are willing to give, without seeking anything in return, we are making offerings; we are being generous.

When we give of ourselves, we are filled with spiritual joy. Everyone working in unity to give of themselves is the greatest offering to me. In fact, what do I gain from this? ‘Nothing’ But I am already content. What I gained is contentment and happiness. This is how I truly feel. I am content and happy.

I am honored to have so many people who share my vision, who are willing to listen to me and who help me accomplish what I want to accomplish. You bring love to those whom I want to love.

However capable a person is, he or she only has two hands; however capable those hands are, they are still only a pair of hands. We can only hug one person; our hands are full hugging one person alone. How many people can one embrace? However, I feel that we are able to embrace countless living beings. As long as we broaden our heart we can embrace the entire universe.

See, when I start the verse, everyone can complete the verse. This shows our hearts are connected. Of course, this is because you listen to my Dharma talks, so you are familiar with my teachings. That is why everyone here can finish a sentence that I started. We share the same heart and walk on the same path. The Buddha’s teachings point a direction for us to follow.

Ordinary people are confused about their life’s direction. They go about their life in the dark without knowing their way. The Buddha’s teachings are like a beacon guiding us in the correct direction. In order to go in the correct direction, we need to quickly pioneering a path amidst grass in forest. If there is no path, we should look to the correct direction and start creating a path. We hope that this path can lead us in the correct direction.

As long as we’ve created the path, we’ll naturally see the direction this path is heading. We can then start to pave this path, inch by inch, with love and start walking on this path.

We should also deliver all living beings. We need to be clear about this. We vow to deliver all living beings with a sincere heart. What comes after this? We vow to eliminate our afflictions with an upright mind, learn all the Dharma with deep faith, and vow to attain Buddhahood with a true heart. That’s correct.

Sincerity, uprightness, good faith and honesty are the values of Tzu Chi volunteers. The Buddha’s great vows are to deliver all living beings, to end all afflictions, to learn all Dharma and to attain Buddhahood. That’s right. These are the “Four Great Vows.” We should always remember to practice these Four Great Vows and have sincerity, uprightness, good faith and honesty in practicing these vows. This is walking the Bodhisattva Path and practicing the Six Paramitas.

The goal is to attain Buddhahood. It will take a long time to reach this goal, so we have to be patient. This takes a long time because ordinary people are not firm in their aspirations. Thus, if we remain firm to our initial aspiration, then we will eventually attain Buddhahood.

If we don’t have much strength, we can make fewer vows and do what we can. If we have more strength, then we can do more. This is how we make vows. We will not suffer losses.

If we make great vows and put in a lot of effort, we will gain spiritual joy from our experiences. Being filled with spiritual joy is something that is difficult to describe with words.

All in all, I hope that everyone can have such a mindset. By changing our mindset, we can accomplish anything. We can be determined, create blessings, make vows and have power and strength. Isn’t that what we have been saying? As long as we aspire to give, we will create blessings. By making vows, we will have the strength to carry it out.

Everyone, the essence of the heart, the Buddha and living beings are the same. Everyone can become a Buddha. It is truly very simple. Everyone can become a Buddha. However, ordinary people are troubled by all kinds of ignorance and afflictions. So, the Buddha had to be patient and begin with expedient teachings. It took him nearly fifty years before he finally taught the way of the One Vehicle.

Everyone, Tzu Chi is entering its 52nd year. Fifty two years is two years more than half a century. Thus, we are at the beginning of another 50 years, and there are countless centuries ahead of us. The future depends on us to create and pave this path at this moment. By setting the path in the right direction and paving it smooth, we will always walk on the Bodhisattva Path for life after life.

I hope that when you return to your country, everyone should head in the same direction and cultivate yourselves diligently, then we can pool together people’s power of love, so that the world can be full of love and happiness. I am grateful to everyone. May you have faith, make vows and put them into practice.  I give you my blessings. Thank you.
