20170609接力關懷‧翻轉生命 Caring for People with Love To Transform Their Lives

Our life is limited. Being born into this world, we need to be very mindful in understanding the life principles of what is happening in the world and the relationships between people in this world. Right now, our understanding is that the extreme weather in the world had led to many natural disasters. We also understand that humans can do good or bad, sometimes in very extreme ways.

Man-made disasters are caused by humans, but heartwarming blessings are also created by humans, who bring warmth and happiness to others. Everyone should have love in their hearts and be willing to help and care for one another. People in suffering truly need people with love in their hearts to reach out to them and be willing to alleviate their suffering.

Living bodhisattvas are those who reach out to people in suffering to accompany them and alleviate their suffering. Living bodhisattvas can create blessings and bring warmth and happiness to others in this world. Every person has the ability to do this. Living bodhisattvas are not far away, but are actually right next to us. In fact, a living bodhisattva lies in the heart of every one of us.

At any time, with a single thought of goodness, every person can use their abilities to give themselves to help others. In this world, there are people who need help, so there’s a need for someone to actively help them. Now, it is important for us to purify people’s hearts.

For example, even though the number of Tzu Chi volunteers in the U.K. is small and what they can do is limited, they have great perseverance and they have been providing care to the homeless for a long time. They also purify the hearts of the homeless, inspire love in them and guide them toward the direction of good. The activities Tzu Chi volunteers organized aim to purify the hearts of the homeless.

Their prayers for peace and harmony were so pious and sincere, which generated an invisible strength. Volunteers in the U.K. have been humbly purifying people’s hearts and providing encouragement to them. We see that on the street, a poster displayed the sincere wishes for world peace that were written by the homeless, which is very touching. This requires people to interact with each other.

We also see the medical case of Mr. Wu Xiaodong. His family, which consists of three members, has suffered greatly. Xiaodong’s mother suffers from diabetes, while his father has motor neuron disease and has been bedridden for more than 10 years. Xiaodong himself also has a medical condition.

Xiaodong graduated from Fudan University and he was a very good student. After graduation, he found a job and performed well at work. However, he gradually found that he could not maintain his balance and he slowly lost his agility and would sometimes fall.

The situation gradually got worse and it was not until later on that he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. If he didn’t take his medication, he couldn’t move at all. However, each time he took his medication, he couldn’t control himself and would bump into things around the house with great force. I heard that he broke everything made of glass in his house. This family of three has truly suffered a lot.

“His father has motor neuron disease and has been confined to bed for 12 years. When we visited his family, we saw that they were in a lot of hardship. We saw that Xiaodong’s mother had to work very hard to take care of him. So we began to assess their situation and think of ways to help this family.”

Tzu Chi volunteers reported his case to Tzu Chi in Taiwan. After the Hualien Tzu Chi hospital conducted an assessment, a decision was made to bring him to Taiwan. His mother came with him to Taiwan. Tzu Chi’s volunteers provided care to him and the medical team provided him with medical treatment.

“The device implanted in his brain serves as a part of his medication but without side effects. After the surgery was completed and the medical device turned on we found that the effect of the device was better than expected.

Basically, Xiaodong no longer needs to take the medication that he had been taking. He is only taking some supplemental medication. I hope Xiaodong can help his mother. His mother has been caring for him for a long time so I hope he can help his mother around the house and also take care of his father.”  I saw Xiaodong gradually recovering. He came to the Abode before he returned home.

“I want to serve as a documenting volunteer. I am grateful to Master and the doctors. I am grateful to the nurses. I am grateful to all those who helped me. I am grateful to my mother.”

“Seeing Xiaodong do so well makes me so happy that I even smile in my sleep. We have waited so long for this day.”

After Xiaodong went home, he said this to his father, “I am Xiaodong, I am better now, and I can look after you. Dad is happy now. “

I told Master that in the future, Xiaodong and I will both become Tzu Chi volunteers and wear the blue-and-white uniform. Master said, ‘I look forward to it.’  So many volunteers are here to welcome you and cheer for you. You have to take concrete action to repay their kindness.”

“I will volunteer for Tzu Chi and work hard.”

Xiaodong is now able to walk down the stairs by himself. The improvement is remarkable. Volunteers also told me that he now listens to my morning Dharma talk every day. I am touched to hear this. He is also dedicated to recycling work. Doing recycling work makes me healthy. What else? Doing recycling work gives me wisdom.”

Everyone, this is how we help others with the power of love. Tzu Chi’s four missions of Charity, Medicine, Education and Culture are working together. Most importantly, our charity mission needs to reach out to more people. Because of these Tzu Chi volunteers in Shanghai, we were able to find out about Xiaodong and bring him to Hualien.

After the surgery, he went back to Shanghai and the local volunteers have continued to accompany him and give him support. This is very touching. Our charity work needs to be more widespread.

We also see the case of a man called Li Xin, who had gone astray when he was young. Even though it has been many years since his physical injury, which cannot be recovered, with Tzu Chi volunteer’s support, his heart was healed. Now he can make a living by repairing clocks and watches and he has learned Buddhist teachings. These are touching stories.

So I hope that there can be more Tzu Chi volunteers around the world.
