20170513溯源浴佛善傳延History of Tzu Chi's Buddha Day Ceremony

We see the footages from the past Buddha Day’s ceremonies, which first began 10 years ago, in 2007. The ceremony has been held at the square of the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. The venue was set up in a very solemn way and participants engaged in walking meditation.

I am very grateful to our volunteer, Ci Yue, for coming up with this idea 10 years ago. I am also grateful to Mr. Guo Meng-yung to composing the music for the ceremony.

Since that year, we have been holding Buddha Day Ceremony at the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. I am very grateful; the formation is different every year as Ci Yue is very creative.

I am also grateful to other volunteers in her team for mindfully planning the ceremony with Tzu Chi’s values and spirit. With their wisdom, they designed new formations every year.

The number of participants has also continued to grow. I am even more grateful to the Dharma masters for supporting this event. The number of participating Dharma masters has grown to over 200 now. It increases every.

I am also grateful to our volunteers, as the Buddha Day Ceremony approaches, they would visit Buddhist temples and invite these venerable masters to the ceremony with gratitude, sincerity, and respect.

At the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, the ceremony always displays goodness, beauty, and people’s sincerity. After we held the Buddha Day Ceremony in this way, the idea of conducting the ceremony in this manner spread to Tzu Chi volunteers in other countries.

Overseas volunteers were inspired by volunteers in Taiwan and started to hold similar ceremonies in their country. Knowing that this is the right direction to conduct a solemn ceremony, with their creativity and mindfulness, volunteers in different countries would design different formations. This was how volunteers in different countries came to celebrate Buddha Day in this way.

It’s been ten years. I am grateful to Ci Yue and her team for starting this and for training volunteers. I am also grateful to those who are interested in learning how to conduct the Buddha Day Ceremony and teaching other volunteers so that every year we have been able to conduct such beautiful and grand Buddha Day Ceremony.

I am very grateful for this. For the past 10 years, we have documented the ceremony every year.

This show that by starting in the right direction, we will be able to continue in this way in the right path. Although the formations differ, the essence has remained the same, which stays beautiful and pure. There are so many things to be grateful of. I’m grateful to everyone for being united in heart to make the ceremony possible.

With a heart of gratitude, people express their piety in repaying the kindness of the Buddha, their parents, and everyone in society. The Buddha expounded life principles in this world and taught people to be filial. Filial piety is the foundation of all good deeds. Only with filial piety and good deeds can our society be harmonious.

We need to remind people to have love in their hearts. To love and to cherish life come from the teachings of the Buddha, which has paved a path for us to walk on so that we know be grateful to our parents. It also taught us that we cannot survive on our own. People come together to create a society so that we can live a life of abundant food and supplies.

Therefore, we must be grateful to all people. As everyone has their own profession that contributes to our society, we want to express our gratitude to the Buddha, our parents, and people in society.

For the past few days, it was quite hot at times during the rehearsal. I was concerned. However, I’m glad to see many young people participating this year. These young people are the children or grandchildren of Tzu Chi volunteers and other young professionals.

They gathered together to show the beauty and goodness of the ceremony. We also see a young lady who has a skin condition and should not be exposed to sunlight.

It is quite hot these past few days, how’s your skin?

It’s ok. It gets itchier when I sweat. But I wear a jacket to protect myself from the sun’s UV rays. When my skin itches, I need to concentrate more on my movements. Otherwise, I can’t get the movements right.

She has been under the sun for many days, so I am concerned for her. But she has been every brave. Ever since she was born her skin condition has been giving her a hard time, but with her mother’s support and encouragement, she has built up a positive attitude to accept her condition and be at ease with it.

It is quite remarkable that she is unaffected by her condition. With her broad heart, she face her condition with optimism and overcomes it. This is very touching.

In addition, there are more participating Dharma masters this year. Venerable masters from many temples will join us and provide guidance. This is a grand event in Buddhism. I am very touched, and I am very grateful. We must be vigilant and pious at all times. For the ceremony, we must be sincerely pious and pray for a peaceful and harmonious world without disasters.

We also see in Myanmar that people in eight villages participated in Buddha Day Ceremony. To spread the spirit and teachings of the Buddha, volunteers had been going door to door to inform the villagers of the ceremony and making preparations since May.

Despite the simple venue, they carried out a solemn ceremony. In a small village school with a lot of trees, our Tzu Chings set up simple tables and chairs for ceremony. We are happy to attend the Buddha Day Ceremony.

Thank you, Master Cheng Yen.

It is the busy season for farmers now, yet more than 400 villagers attended the ceremony. It is quite remarkable. They conducted a simple and peaceful ceremony with a walking meditation in this small village. With the temperature of 38 degrees Celsius, participants waited patiently under the scorching sun. This is very touching.
