20170614淨心造福弭災殃Purifying Our Minds to Quell Disasters

Heavy rains are expected in the next few days. Also, compared with the heavy rains earlier this month the estimated rainfall will last longer possibly for days to come. Strong convective clouds will form in different places every day, and it’ll be a while before the skies clear up. Please stay alert in the following week to come.

The areal coverage of precipitation this time will be larger, and the entire island of Taiwan, especially the western region, might be affected by both the plum rain front and the southwest monsoon at the same time. Extremely heavy rain is expected in western Taiwan. Mountainous areas may experience torrential rain.

Seeing the weather forecasts, I am truly concerned. About ten days ago, Taiwan was hit by heavy rains due to a plum rain front. Our volunteers quickly mobilized to pay home visits or do cleanup work. Now, yet another rain front is coming. Our volunteers, with heightened vigilance have hurried to rural and mountainous areas to bring care to residents there and help them to get through the heavy rains.

Our volunteers are very thoughtful and always give timely aid to help people take precautions for disasters. Every time a disaster hits, we see our volunteers serve as living bodhisattvas to offer aid to whoever needs help. Although I feel truly touched every time I see them working with such dedication, I also feel worried about them. I often remind them to keep safety in mind because only when we are safe and well will we be able to go to people’s aid.

Particularly, the rain front this time is also expected to bring heavy rains, which makes me all the more worried. People in every region of Taiwan, including Penghu and Kinmen, should all take precautions. If we can stay alert and take precautions, safety will be better ensured. So, we should heighten our vigilance and take necessary precautions so as to minimize the impact of the disaster.

The coming heavy rains are really worrisome. Our volunteers have gone to disaster-prone mountainous areas to remind residents to take precautions and persuade some of them to evacuate and stay at safe places as erratic weather patterns due to climate change may cause more severe damage than we imagine. This is how our volunteers take action to help people stay safe.

We also see that at one of our kindergartens in Malaysia, the children really have good manners. Life education there is impressive to me as if guides the children to understand there are people suffering in the world.

To inspire them to count their blessings, teachers tell them stories about how Dharma masters at the Abode have lived by the motto “No work, no meal” and done labor work to support themselves. Then, teachers have them experience such a life by doing labor work. To remind them to cherish water resources, children are also asked to shoulder little barrels of water.

We should never waste water. This is what Grandmaster tells us because water is very precious.

Very tired. Then, what will you do? I won’t give up. Is the water for your own use? No, it’s for my elder schoolmates. I see. So, you won’t give up.

To inspire them to cherish food they are told how Dharma masters at the Abode used to marinate tofu in salt and eat it with plain rice. Then, they’ll know the hardship of having little food to eat and won’t be picky eaters anymore.

We hope that after learning how Master and Dharma masters at the Abode have led a life of frugality and diligence, our students of all ages can learn to lead a simple life and keep their desires in check.

Also, the children take Jing Si Aphorisms to heart because with pure minds, they easily absorb what they are taught. As long as teachers are mindful of what they teach to children, the children can all be inspired by what they’ve learned.

If we compare Tzu Chi’s education system to gardening our kindergartens are where seeds of goodness are planted with our teachers serving as gardeners to give adequate soil and water based on the properties of the seeds. Our children are like the seeds of goodness, and through each stage of education, the seeds will sprout and grow into big trees.

Furthermore, we take the children to communities to promote Jing Si Aphorisms and the true principles they’ve learned.

What are we going to do today? Spread Jing Si Aphorisms.

Good morning. We’re students from Tzu Chi Kindergarten. Could you spare us some time? We want to share with you a Jing Si Aphorism: “Do not underestimate yourself for human beings have unlimited potential.” Do you know what it means?

The children promote their favorite Jing Si Aphorisms, which can be practiced in our daily life. Listening to what the children said, the community residents may be inspired to do good and give with love.

Jing Si Aphorisms are inspiring. They can inspire everyone to do good and the Earth won’t fall sick.

You hope to inspire all to do good? (Yes.) What have you learned from Jing Si Aphorisms? Respect. So, what is respect?  Respect is to be thoughtful of others. For example, we can’t bother people if they are busy.

This is how Tzu Chi’s education system cultivates a person from childhood. To cultivate the seed of goodness in everyone is what we need to do.

The erratic weather patterns are really alarming. The chaotic state of the world originates from people’s minds. So, we really must purify our minds and sow blessings. Only then can we bring the elements of Nature back to balance and quell natural disasters caused by erratic weather patterns. Everything depends on a simple thought, so we all need to take good care of our minds.
