20170605真實道場拔眾苦Conducting Self-Cultivation to Alleviate People`s Suffering

In Taiwan, heavy rains that started before June 1st have caused landslides on the Suhua Highway. Road maintenance workers have worked quickly to repair the damaged highway.

They risk their lives to operate heavy equipment along steep cliffs to repair the damaged highway. We see that a landslide has blocked off the road, and there are steep cliffs along the damaged road.

Still, they carry out their work in the rain. My heart really goes out to them for carrying out such dangerous work. When roads are damaged by heavy rain or an earthquake, the crew of workers who are in charge of maintaining roads will make repairs rain or shine, even though the work is hard and dangerous.

We see that rocks are still falling from the mountain from time to time, but they still carry out their work. Besides road maintenance workers, electric technicians also need to make repairs in the rain to restore power when a power failure occurs.

Resident of Hoya Village, “Four or five trees fell and hit the nearby power line of the Taiwan Power Company.”

Village Head Jenfu Chen of Hoya Village in Lugu Township, “ I am grateful to the technicians of Taiwan Power Company for making repairs in the heavy rain.”

We can enjoy utilities because of these courageous workers’ efforts. Do we really understand the hardships they endured? Thus, we need to always be grateful to them in our daily life.

The heavy downpours have caused damage al over Taiwan. In such times of need, Tzu Chi volunteers always come forth to help.

Yesterday, through videoconferencing, I talked with volunteers in Taipei. I was very touched by their reports. There are too many touching stories to share in such a short time.

I deeply feel that this is an opportunity for volunteers to cultivate themselves, because bodhisattvas go to the aid of those in suffering.

The aid relief Tzu Chi volunteers carried out includes providing boxed meals, hot meals, and helping with the cleaning after the flood. This is truly very touching.

I told the volunteers that this is how one truly conducts spiritual cultivation. In my recent morning Dharma talks on the Lotus Sutra, I have mentioned this aspect of cultivation.

Bodhisattvas practice the Six Paramitas and go to the aid of those in suffering. Now, because of the imbalance of the water element, heavy rainfall has caused floods, brining water and mud into households and damaging the furniture and appliances inside.

Nowadays, all high-rise buildings have basements. If the ground above is flooded by torrential rain, the basements will be flooded too. (Since the torrential rains) have affected a very large area, many people are needed to give with the power of love to help others.

The military has mobilized soldiers and Tzu Chi volunteers provide help wherever there are people in need. The volunteers are well-trained and give of themselves unconditionally, which makes them trustworthy. Their selfless dedication is truly touching.

Resident Mr. Ju, “I want to thank the Tzu Chi volunteers and the military, for they did most of the cleaning. Without their help, it might take us more than a week to finish the cleaning.”

Tzu Chi volunteer Lichun Hsu, “ It truly makes our heart heavy to see the situation of the flooded households because we live in the same community. We will do everything we can to provide the assistance they need.”

Tzu Chi volunteer, “Don’t put too much water in one bucket, or you’ll get tired soon. Okay. There is still a lot of water to remove.”

Head of Xi’an Village Guorong Lee in Neihu District, “Tzu Chi volunteers not only provided us with hot meals, beverages, and dry goods, but they also provided manpower, which is really touching.

More than 20 Tzu Chi volunteers came and helped clean the households that were most affected by the flood. It was nearly 10:30 p.m. when they finished cleaning.”

Community Head Mingjei Chen of Xi’an Village in Neihu District, “Let me tell you the value of a bowl of noodles. Last night, when we really needed food, the bowl of vegetarian minced pork noodles, though vegetarian, was the tastiest bowl of noodles I ever had.

Eating the bowl of noodles while standing in the mud with rain boots on, I was quite overwhelmed.” Resident Mr. Lai, “I am truly moved that Tzu Chi volunteers were (the first to come to our aid.)”

Sicheng Village Resident, “When I heard the announcement, I came here to get a boxed meal. Is the boxed meal filling?  Yes, it is. Is the vegetarian meal delicious? It was very good.”

Tzu Chi volunteer Kuanshen Liau, “The people of the village told us that they needed 400 boxed meals, so the Tzu Chi emergency relief team took on the responsibility of providing these meals.”

Yesterday afternoon, I heard the volunteers who provided aid relief share their experiences, and they all said that they were tired and that their feet were sore.

I rarely hear Tzu Chi volunteers say that they feel tired or sore, but these volunteers said yesterday that providing aid relief made them very tired.

From this, we know that they walked long distances to visit each household to understand their situation, and when they found elderly people living alone, they put them on the list of Tzu Chi long-term care recipient. Tzu Chi volunteers are truly very mindful.

Yesterday, I said that the cultivation ground where living bodhisattvas can truly cultivate themselves is among people.

After we learn the Buddha’s teachings and take them to heart, whenever a situation comes up and there are people in suffering, we immediately go to them to alleviate their suffering and share the Dharma with them. This shows that the cultivation ground for living bodhisattvas is among people.

Even though serving others is hard work, seeing that the aid relief has brought smiles to the faces of the affectees and that they have resumed their normal life truly fill us with comfort and happiness, and this feeling of joy comes from giving of oneself unconditionally.

After the volunteers completed the aid relief, their hearts are filled with spiritual joy. All the volunteers who provided aid relief said their hearts were filled with peace and happiness.

Their hearts are truly filled with joy. Even though they are tired, by giving of themselves to help the affectees, they have created a valuable (memory,) and have nurtured their wisdom-life.

All in all, I told the volunteers, “Even though the aid relief was very tiring, your hearts are filled with joy and peace.”

This is the time that we put the Dharma into practice. There is a saying that extensive preparation eventually pays off. We have been learning the Dharma for thousands of days.

Now is the time to put the Dharma into practice. The recent disaster can serve as a good example of the teachings I talked about in my recent Dharma talk.

Thus, this is why I say that the place where living bodhisattvas can truly cultivate themselves is among people.
