20170604緣苦眾生菩薩道Delivering Living Beings from the Suffering World

I’ve been telling people that Mother Nature is out of balance. To restore its balance, we must harmonize people’s hearts. In the world, when Tzu Chi volunteers raise funds for charity, it is to purify people’s hearts. Indeed, we need to purify the hearts of people in the world.

For the past few years, in my Dharma talks on the Lotus Sutra, the teachings of the chapters have been emphasizing more and more of the importance of going amongst people to serve as a bodhisattva. Spiritual cultivation should not be focused on only benefiting oneself.

You need to inspire people, but how do we do that? It takes action to inspire people. The action is to alleviate people’s sufferings. Some of their sufferings come from financial hardship, some from mental suffering, and some from life’s impermanence and natural disasters.

For people who are suffering financial hardship, natural disasters, or life impermanence, we need to take concrete action by personally providing them material supplies. To carry out such aid, how do we continuously help countless people in suffering owing to their karma and do so in the long run?

Due to their karma, people are born with their direct and circumstantial retribution. Some may always live in poverty since birth, or be stricken by life impermanence.

Take the Syrian refugees for example, not all of them were poor. Some were very rich, some were famous, and some are well-educated. Some of them had a lot of assets, including valuable goods and properties. However, when their country fell into political unrest, they did not know that would happen to them.

This is why we must learn the Dharma and take it to heart. After learning the Dharma, we must understand the law of karma. Because we understand the law of karma, we know to make use of (karmic affinities) to purify people’s hearts and pool people’s strength together to help those in need.

As bodhisattvas are dedicated to helping those in suffering, we need to reach out to people in need, no matter what kind of suffering they are in, such as those needing material aid. Therefore, it is essential to seize karmic affinities to inspire love and share the Dharma with those who don’t know it.

We must take opportunities to inspire love in people. After their love is inspired, we purify their hearts with Dharma. To inspire people’s love takes action. Hence, we encourage them to donate whatever they can. We don’t ask them to donate a lot, but hope people they can accept this concept. The more people can understand this concept, the more they will give of themselves willingly.

In the United States, we see it was hit by several disasters and that volunteers drove nine hours on the highway travelling long distance to survey disaster areas and provide relief for those affected. At every aid distribution, they inspired a lot of people. However, if they sowed seeds of kindness all over the vast land of the US and diligently nurtured these seeds, (there would be more volunteers around the US.)

Then, they wouldn’t have to go such a long way to provide disaster relief. However, when disaster occurred, they seized the opportunity to help. Wherever we go for disaster relief, we should leave seeds of kindness so the Dharma can be widespread in the world. With the Dharma, we can help countless people in the world. It is my wish that the work of purifying people’s hearts can be continuously passed on.

Everybody knows that since last year I have been wanting earnestly to pass on our Dharma. The Jing Si Dharma lineage must be passed on and the Tzu Chi school of Buddhism must be established, which have been formally done. So, please follow the Jing Si Dharma closely and truly pass it on.

You all know that the Jing Si Dharma lineage is based on the spirit of Buddhism. In the past, the Dharma was passed on only in monasteries. However, I hope that all Tzu Chi volunteers, who are members of Tzu Chi family, can also pass on our Jing Si Dharma lineage. Each of you has made vows to be a living bodhisattva to spread the Dharma and walk the Bodhisattva Path.

It is not easy for one to cultivate oneself; yet, one must still deliver all living beings. Buddha’s teachings have always been about delivering all living beings.  When can we deliver ourselves? If we cannot do so in this life time and miss opportunities to deliver others, our lifetime will be spent in vain. Why not deliver ourselves and others at the same time?

We can all be on the same boat of compassion. We can steer the boat with everyone onboard to the other shore. We can deliver ourselves while delivering others. When I arrive at the shore, we want others to arrive at the same time. I hope we can apply the Dharma in this world, not only that, but to do so solidly.

To deliver oneself and others at the same time is the essence of the Lotus Sutra. The Buddha said that it is difficult to put the Lotus Sutra into practice because one needs to interact with people and deal with the impurities of the world, such as people’s incorrect views and afflictions.

People have a limited lifespan and a lot of impurities in their hearts. In this world filled with impurities, we need to deliver ourselves as well as others while practicing the Dharma. We must use our limited lifetime to accomplish this.
