20170522共行環保‧心富傳法Spreading the Dharma to Inspire Others and Protect the Environment

We see that disasters are occurring frequently in the world. For example, in a desert region of Chile, a heavy rain has caused a river to overflow, leading to severe flooding. Thus, we must heighten our vigilance.

What has made the Earth not safe and well, and why are there so many disasters? It is because of the inadvertent consequences of human actions.

Now, we see that (in New Taipei City,) people there understand the issue of (littering on Mt. Guanyin) and that they must take collective action to stop littering and protect the environment.

The inadvertent actions of humans have caused the mountainside to be covered with large amounts of trash, which will take a long time to clean up.

Thus, we should set an example and stop littering. We should also encourage others (to clean up the trash in the mountain.) Indeed, this is what people should do --- to work together and to solve the problem with the same understanding and consensus.

If every person can aspire to stop littering on the mountain, and each carries a bag of trash off the mountain, the mountain will become very clean in the near future.

How do we purify people’s minds? As long as people are aspired, we can better our society like they clean up the mountain. We need to use our power of love and take action to bring down the trash one bag after another with patience.

In my morning Dharma talk, I mentioned that in order to walk the Bodhisattva Path, we need to make vows to inspire others to use their power of love to do good.

If we can do this, our society will become harmonious and beautiful. To bring peace to the world, we need to gather together our power of love and work together with one heart. If we do this, we can create a beautiful society.

We also see that Tzu Chi volunteers in South Africa have gone to Port Elizabeth. One of the aid recipients they visited was a 93 year-old lady who is blind had not eaten for days.

Tzu Chi Volunteer, “We found she hasn’t bath as we saw, we bathed her and tried to clean her and also do the washing.”

The local volunteers in South Africa traveled over 1,000 kilometers with rice and supplies to visit this elderly lady. They also bathed her and helped her clean her home.

Also, we see that in King William’s Town, a large group of local residents gathered on a large grassy field to listen to Tzu Chi volunteers talk about the power of love as well as how to create blessings and help others.

Volunteer Nomfundiso, “You don’t need to change your religious faith to volunteer with Tzu Chi, and they won’t ask you to convert to their faith. What they do teach you is how to help others.”

Chief Njokweniof Peddie Community, “I feel happy and honored Because the Tzu Chi volunteers have given us hope. They also brought rice from Taiwan to distribute to those in need. Many people in this community will serve as volunteers.”

The chief called on everyone present to help those in suffering and to gather everyone’s love to care for the needy. I hoped that local people can give with love and become a team of local volunteers.

Some people in a town have been (inspired to volunteer and serve with love.) As long as we have love in our hearts, and when opportunities come, we can tend the field and sow the seeds of love.

These local volunteers in Africa travel long distances back and forth. This is truly not easy. They even travel to different countries and faraway places to help others. They’re very dedicated to their spiritual cultivation and put what they have learned into practice diligently.

Their values are in line with the Dharma. Even though they’re Christians, they carry out Tzu Chi’s work based on Buddhist spirits and values. Thus, they accept Tzu Chi, chant “ Amitabha” with Tzu Chi volunteers, and appreciate what Tzu Chi has done for them.

Volunteers in Africa also teach the locals that their inspiration to serve comes from Tzu Chi in Taiwan, which had humble beginnings and gradually grew to become an international organization.

These volunteers are very familiar with they history of Tzu Chi, and they always remember how Tzu Chi treats them with sincere love. Since the volunteers in Africa (have received the Dharma,) they carry out Tzu Chi’s spirit and values wherever they go.

This method of inspiring their fellow people is very powerful. Tzu Chi distributes the rice from Taiwan’s government to them every year. After the rice was distributed to people in need, volunteers tell them about environmental protection so they kept the rice bags.

They pulled out the cotton thread from the rice bags. They kept the thread intact and use it to sew the rice bag into reusable bags. The reusable bags all still have the logo of Tzu Chi Taiwan on them, so wherever these aid recipients go, people could see the bags.

With gratitude in their hearts, they have made these reusable bags with the power of love. This is indeed very touching. Every person that receives aid is truly in need. Those who received help have become inspired to help others, and thus have become spiritually rich. Though they are not financially wealthy, they are spiritually rich.

They are full of joy now. They used to complain a lot, feel discontented, and often get into fights and trouble. But now they live in peace and harmony. This is the work of the Dharma.

When people take in and practice the Dharma and Tzu Chi’s spirit, they will take the initiative to help others. This is very touching. They also encourage aid recipients to donate and sow blessings.

At every distribution of relief goods, the volunteers tell aid recipients that small donations can help people around the world with their power of love. Volunteers teah them that even donating a small sum can help others in other parts of the world.

Their goal is to inspire love in people’s hearts. This is why they encourage local people, rich or poor, to be donating members. This way, they can carry out Tzu Chi’s work there with local resources, but giving the credit to Tzu Chi Taiwan, as it is the source of the power of love.

This is very moving. Everywhere in the world, when a person becomes a Tzu Chi volunteer, he is empowered to help others with local resources.
