20170531合和互協共成就Working Hand in Hand to Create a Better World for All

We see the landslide on the Suhua Highway. The highway is yet to be fully restored though the restoration work has been going on for two to three days. We truly must be grateful to those who work very hard to pave roads as not only is their work arduous but they are also risking their lives since further landslides may still occur.

They are credited with the feat of building smooth roads for people and timely restoring transport links in the event of landslides. From the landslides, we see the Earth has indeed been damaged by human beings. Yet, human beings have yet to awaken as they still do damage to the Earth.

With constant development many mountains have lost the ability hold excessive rainwater, and are now prone to landslides. This is a result of the over-depletion of natural resources. Without keeping their desires in check, some people seek transient happiness paying no regard to the possible dangers that may ensure. What we really need to do is cultivate a heart of gratitude.

We see that several regions in South Asia have recently been hit by heavy rainfall. The flooding in Sri Lanka, which I also mentioned yesterday, is still ongoing, and a cyclone has hit Bangladesh, bringing strong winds and heavy rains.

Also, around 20,000 houses in refugee camps have been destroyed by the cyclone. The refugees were already living in hardship. Now, this climate change-incurred disaster adds to their suffering. There are truly still many people suffering around the world. It’s sad to realize that we can’t reach out to all of them.

Luckily, we still see heartwarming images. Take for example, our Zulu volunteers in South Africa. They are very dedicated to sharing the Dharma with others. See how they went to many villages, one after another, to hold Buddha Day ceremonies and worked hard to inspire filial piety and love in the villagers.

For those who have difficulty moving around, they held the ceremonies at their bedsides, holding their hands to dip the water so they could be blessed too. There was an elder man. Although he was very weak and could hardly speak, our volunteers shared the Dharma with him with gentle words. Our volunteers are truly very thoughtful.

We also see Venezuela. At my Dharma talk at dawn a few days ago, I mentioned Ms. Wu, our volunteer in Venezuela. Her dedication to Tzu Chi is truly admirable. The reason she is able to do that is because her husband, Mr. Liu, is very supportive of her. They both work together to spread Tzu Chi’s spirit and carry out Tzu Chi’s work in Venezuela.

Domestic turmoil in Venezuela has caused severe inflation, social unrest and rampant robbery. Nonetheless, Ms. Wu, with a heart full of part patience and love, decided to maintain the original pricing of the commodities in her stores whereas many other stores have adjusted prices due to the inflation. Feeling for the local people, she keeps the pricing unadjusted thereby winning the hearts of the locals.

Her loving heart has also touched the police. They offer to protect her when she visits the needy and holds aids distributions. See how she inspires people with her virtues. She is truly remarkable.

To bring aid and care to those in most need of help and those who need long-term care Ms. Wu pays home visits each time before holding an aid distribution. The home visits allow her to know which aid recipient needs more and which one need less due to improved living conditions. By doing so, she can make a list and give supplies to those most in need.

And she is not alone during the home visits as the police are more than happy to go with her. Also, during the home visits, many people have been inspired to give with love a well. Ms. Wu is also committed to helping children living in extreme poverty to receive school education.

With scarce resources available, Ms. Wu can only resort to the money gained from recycling work to help the needy. With the domestic turmoil there, we have no access to offer aid to them, be it donations, supplies, or other resources. However, she still holds on to her aspiration even though there is really not much money to be gained through recycling.

Indeed, it’s not easy to do good with such scarce resources. Even so, Ms. Wu has remained dedicated and carried out relief work so well for so many years without any complaints. She and her husband are truly remarkable. In particular, Ms. Wu is very determined and never steps back in the face of difficulties. This is truly a rare achievement worth the admiration of everyone.

All of us here in Taiwan should follow her spirit. To allow more people in Taiwan to see the suffering around the world and thereby inspire them to give what they can, we’re holding a prayer concert in Taichung. I’m truly touched to see the children and even grandchildren of our volunteers also take part.

There are indeed many touching stories. Let us give our sincere wishes for the success of the event. And most importantly, I hope everyone can work in unity to prepare for the concert, which will also be a remarkable feat.
