20170526親手布施六度行Practice the Six Paramitas to Help Those in Suffering

In today’s world, many refugees have been forced to flee their homeland and have no place to go. In the Mediterranean Sea, there are vessels overloaded with refugees. These refugees face many risks. Thus, many ended up drowning. Some are lucky to be rescued and some have to endure suffering.

We see that many refugee children have undergone many perils and hardships, and many of them have become orphans. Therefore, UNICEF has been calling on people to help these refugees with the power of love. But how can we help them? Where do we begin? How can we deliver aid smoothly? How do we reach out to them directly and efficiently? There are so many challenges.

However, we see that Tzu Chi volunteers are urging people to take concrete actions to help. They have also inspired children so that they can be aware of those who are suffering in the world, such as the refugee children, who are around their age. Seeing the suffering of others have inspired these children to count their blessings, cherish what they have, and create blessings. There is a wholesome way of inspiring children.

We also see that students from other schools willingly help the refugee children. The students spent time writing cards and drawing pictures for refugee children.

“I drew a picture of Syria and Taiwan. They are holding hands, which show that we are good friends. I wrote, Taiwan loves you and we are helping you. I wish for world peace and no more war. We have not forgotten you, stay strong.”

For students in Tzu Chi schools, we also provided ways for students to deliver their cards and drawings to the refugee children, who have fled their country, are in poverty and have no place to call home. This is very meaningful. Each picture and each word on the cards received by refugee children show the love and support from Taiwan.

The refugee children also drew pictures. A refugee girl drew an eye shedding tears of blood, which shows the suffering of the fleeing refugees. Another girl drew two half hearts that joined together to form a complete heart.

“One half of the heart I drew stands for Syria, and the other half stands for Taiwan. Though we’ve left Syria and settled in Jordan, today’s visit by the Tzu Chi volunteers truly makes us as happy as we used to be in Syria.”

This picture of a complete heart shows the love, gratitude and respect of the givers and the receivers. We have ways of reaching out to the refugees to give them the help they need and express our love to them.

Love is not the only thing they receive. Children in Taiwan participated in Tzu Chi’s fundraising programs and save money in coin banks and Tzu Chi uses these donations to help the refugee children receive an education, have clothes to wear and food to eat and receive medical care at free clinics.

Tzu Chi volunteers have provided Syrian refugees in Turkey and Jordan with the help that they need. These are concrete actions that truly help the refugees. We see the power of love in this world which requires concrete actions. To inspire people to take concrete actions, it requires us to continuously share the ideas of helping people. People become living bodhisattvas after they learn the true Dharma and walk the Bodhisattva Path.

By practicing the six paramitas, living bodhisattvas use various methods to personally help those in needs and find ways to reach out to people in suffering to bring them comfort and care, and alleviate their suffering. Only by inspiring many people in many places can we gather the strength needed to help refugees.

We also see that in Serbia, starting from last year. Tzu Chi volunteers in Europe took turns providing aid to the refugees.   Today, volunteers there are still providing two meals a day for the refugees.

Because Tzu Chi volunteers provided aid to Bosnia a few years ago, a group of volunteers from Bosnia has been working with Tzu Chi volunteers for a length of time to accompany and care for the refugees in Serbia. These volunteers are very mindful and are willing to take volunteers training.

This year, an entrepreneur was very touched after seeing what Tzu Chi volunteers did for the refugees in Serbia in the last few years. He was touched by the respect and love shown by volunteers. Thus, this entrepreneur expressed that he will provide summer clothes to the refugees in Serbia this year, but he needs Tzu Chi volunteers to help distribute the clothes.

Thus, in order to help this entrepreneur distribute the summer clothes to refugees, Tzu Chi volunteers have already arrived safely in Serbia. This is how Tzu Chi spreads the seeds of goodness in the world. When these seeds are sown, they will sprout, become small trees, then grow to be large trees. These large trees will then produce more seeds of goodness.

Thus, we need to inspire more people to give with love. By doing so, the spirit and values of Buddhism can continually nourish people’s minds, leading to spiritual growth. I’m very grateful to all volunteers for giving of themselves with love in this world.
