20170521一步八印緊追隨Devoting Ourselves to the Eight Footprints of Tzu Chi

Volunteers, I am grateful for the ample space that we have now. Looking back, the Jing Si Abode started with a small Buddha Hall. In that small space, we held seven-day spiritual retreats, did walking meditation, and slept there at night. We can image how few people there were back then.

Tzu Chi continues to develop, and over 30 years ago, we started to build our first hospital. That was when Tzu Chi reached out to the public. Yet, the Abode was still small. The Buddha Hall still served as the office, the dormitory, and the space for walking meditations and Dharma talks. It was in such a small space that we cultivated ourselves.

Gradually, we now have much more space, which was built by our Tzu Chengs and commissioners bit by bit. If I were to calculate the wages, it would be quite a sum. However, our affinities will extend into countless future lives.

All in all, I want to thank all those who have helped from the early days till now for paving the path every inch of the way. We’ve been passion on our lineage. The Tzu Chi Path has been established. This is the efforts of senior volunteers who have been with Tzu Chi for more than 50 years.

Throughout out the years, they’ve been with Tzu Chi. In all these years, I have seen new volunteers joining us to make Tzu Chi a large organization today. Everyone follows me closely and vow to do so life after life. These are deep, deep affinities. These affinities are not (short term,) but deep karmic bonds formed over many lifetimes. Volunteers have followed me all this time.

I once told you that Tzu Chi has four missions and eight footprints. Leading Tzu Chi and making strides leave me no time to turn around to look after you.  You must follow me well and closely. I have no time to turn around to tend to you. I can only focus on what’s ahead and keep going.

That is right. See, we are already starting our 52nd year. This is made possible by Tzu Chi volunteers pooling their strength together. Wherever a serious disaster occurs, volunteers in Taiwan will go there to provide disaster relief or we mobilize Tzu Chi volunteers in nearby countries to go and help.

We’ve provided substantial aid to nearly 100 countries and regions. Also, there are nearly 60 countries and regions with local Tzu Chi volunteers. This is the result of everyone’s efforts accumulated over the years.

Looking back, Tzu Chi started with 30 housewives and three or four commissioners.  For all these years, if it hadn’t been for everyone’s donations and efforts, and inspiring people to join, we wouldn’t have been able to sow seeds of goodness around the world. The seeds have grown into a forest of merit.

As long as the seeds came from the same tree, no matter where they are planted, they carry the genes of the mother tree and grow to be like it. This is why even though I have never been abroad, Tzu Chi volunteers around the world have the same spirit and values.

Wherever they come from, when they reach the airport in Taiwan, volunteers in Taiwan recognize them as Tzu Chi volunteers.  When our volunteers enter another country for relief missions, people can tell they are Tzu Chi volunteers. That is why I say all trees grow to be like the mother tree. Now, there are Tzu Chi volunteers around the world.

If we identify with the direction that Tzu Chi has been taking, we must then walk on this path with determination for lifetimes to come and keep on this path. I’m not able to look after you,(so) you need to follow and learn from the senior volunteers before you, and guide the new volunteers well. Senior volunteers, you need to do this for me. You need to guide and bring along the new volunteers.

Volunteers, I’m grateful to you. No matter where you come from, like a tree with branches growing in all ten directions. From direction directions, the tree all looks the same. There’s no backside of the tree. I hope you can truly be mindful.

Tzu Chi has done a lot. It is not me but who you have been doing it. I only focus on leading. You are actually the ones doing the work by giving of yourselves and your time. (You can tell people that) for the past 51 years, Tzu Chi volunteers have given of themselves in all sorts of ways.

On Da Ai TV, we often see footage of people thanking Taiwan for the love they’ve received. Taiwan is like a tree with its branches growing in ten directions. This tree produces many seeds, and all the seeds come from this mother tree.

Therefore, I hope that the seed in all of your heart be the same and grows into a tree with branches reaching out to ten directions. Therefore, for all the countries that have affinities with Tzu Chi, you have affinities with those countries. Whatever blessing created by Tzu Chi in those countries, you have contributed a part of it and formed good affinities worldwide.

Volunteers, be more mindful! For every day in the past 51 years, I’ve been saying “be more mindful.” I will keep saying “be more mindful” countless times in the future. I will also say I am grateful every day. I cannot say enough how grateful I am right now.

That’s right, we must give Great Love. As you practice having gratitude, respect, and love, remember to be more mindful and work together in unity and harmony with love. This is our direction. All Tzu Chi volunteers should make the Four Great Vows, for they are the way to Buddhahood. Tzu Chi volunteers must have sincerity, uprightness, good faith, and honesty.

We must make sincere vows to deliver all beings. Please bear in mind that to emulate the Buddha is to have a sincere heart. With an upright mind, we eliminate all afflictions. There is no other way. Having faith is to follow our Dharma lineage and the Tzu Chi Path.
To attain Buddhahood, one must cultivate solidly and steadily while forming good affinities with many and practicing the six paramitas. Having set the goal of attaining Buddhahood, one must travel a long journey. Thank you all. I hope we can all embrace Great Love, and be mindful all the time.
