20170514三節合一報重恩 Repaying Kindness to Buddha, Mothers, and All Living Beings

In May, we celebrate Mother’s Day, Buddha Day, and Tzu Chi Day, all together in one day.

In month of May, Buddhist communities celebrate Buddha’s birthday. This is a very important event for Buddhists. The Buddha was born over two thousand years ago. He came to this world is not because of his karma but because of his compassion.

With the karma affinity, he returned to this world with a single goal of delivering living beings by expounding the Dharma to awaken them. This is the reason for the Buddha to come to the world. With the Buddha’s teachings, are people awakened? (After learning the Dharma,) have we gained insights into life’s truth? Did we put them in practice?

It’s very important to put the Dharma into practice. Only by doing so can we truly take the Dharma into our heart. We have to be mindful in our cultivation and practice the Dharma in this world to purify the world, help others to practice the Dharma and take action to do good deeds.

We have to apply what we’ve learned to benefit people and world. This is why the Buddha came to teach the Bodhisattva Path in this world. It can nurture people’s wisdom-life. The Buddha taught that everyone has the same innate nature and wisdom as him.

With his compassion, the Buddha used all sorts of ways to guide living beings not to give up on themselves. We must have self-respect as we have the same capacity to awaken just like the Buddha. The Buddha was candid about letting people know that they should have respect for themselves as well as have love for others.

They also need to respect others as everyone has the capacity to become a Buddha. Everyone can be a bodhisattva. To become a Buddha, one must serve as a bodhisattva. To achieve Buddhahood, one need to practice the six paramitas. To help living beings a achieve Buddhahood, the Buddha taught the way of the Bodhisattva.

As a result, when seeing suffering in the world, many living bodhisattva with love devote themselves to helping and alleviating in suffering. Whenever people are afflicted, living bodhisattvas will go to them to alleviate their suffering and share the Dharma with them. No matter where people in suffering are, living bodhisattvas will be there to help.

For the Buddha Day ceremonies, my heart is filled with gratitude. This morning, Tzu Chi volunteers held Buddha Day ceremonies in Hualien, Taichung, Kaohsiung and Qingshui at the same time. Today is a very meaningful day, I’d like to thank local government official such as the Mayor of Hualien city Mr. Wei, for being present at the ceremony.

Among the guests, Kaohsiung Mayor Ms. Chen attended the ceremony right from the start. In Taichung, many locals’ officials also partook in the ceremony to celebrate Buddha Day. I’d like to express my gratitude to Dharma masters who came to our ceremonies in Taichung, Kaohsiung, and Qingshui.

These Dharma masters from various monasteries gathered together to pray for the world. (Today), not only in Taiwan but around the world, Tzu Chi volunteers are all united in heart to pray sincerely for peace in the world, balanced climate, and favorable weather. We hope to bring out the meaning of this occasion.

We hold Buddha Day ceremonies to thank the Buddha for coming to the world, guiding us to the (right) path, and bringing happiness to people, while teaching us to walk the Bodhisattva Path with Great Love. I’m grateful to Tzu Chi volunteers for working united to make Tzu Chi possible.

Fifty one years have passed and now we are in our 52nd year. I hope we’ll continue to serve people with Great Love. I hope everyone can unite in heart. I am grateful to all the staff and management of Tzu Chi’s Four Missions, teachers and students in Tzu Chi’s schools, and doctors, nurses, medical personnel in Tzu Chi hospitals.

Everyone gives of themselves to cherish lives. We should always harbor gratitude. Let’s not forget that today is also a day to thank mothers. Actually, we should thank both our parents for guiding us and providing us with necessities, so that we can progress smoothly toward our direction for life.

Every day, we should be grateful to the Buddha, our parents, and all living beings and repay their kindness all the time. I hope, we’ll always remember the sincerity of this moment. In every moment, let us pray for the world and the people we live. Having a peaceful world and a harmonious society is a blessing for everyone.

I’m grateful to all Tzu Chi volunteers, all mothers in the world, Buddhas, and Bodhisattvas. I’m grateful to the Dharma masters for guiding the ceremonies. I’m grateful to all Tzu Cui volunteers for giving of themselves diligently every day. I cannot list out all that I am grateful for. I sincerely give my blessings, thank you.
